If I did not find Magic: The Gathering a tiresome chore where I count the seconds until someone wins, I would make my son very happy and gain some free quality bonding experiences. Alas.

Young man complaining about how a girl who calls him every day and cooks him dinner sometimes refers to herself as “just a friend.” Husband and I told him: ASK HER OUT He said “It’s not really a good time to date” because of 2 upcoming months-long bouts of army travel

@shinboson @seashelljulia I don't think that's the same for the kids, but also this is a society-level recommendation, but IMO the parent-level is the relevant one here. People mostly have kids because they want to raise someone genetically related. Raising some smart kid != raising _your_ smartest.

@wescarvalho2 @shlevy She did talk about how to decide the "essential characteristics" of man in quote below. Reason may be necessary to prolong one's own life, but it's not clear why this should make it wrong to promote unreason in others, or otherwise use them for own ends x.com/Lasermazer/sta…
Jesse Mazer@Lasermazer

@RishiJoeSanu Aristotle's essentialism was tied to notion that essences contributed distinct top-down causality (see his rejection of 'harmonia' view of soul starting p. 326 at ancphil.lsa.umich.edu/-/downloads/fa…), Rand has much vaguer (IMO mostly rhetorical) notions of how to justify essentialism

Many here have reconsidered religion upon facing the inadequacy of the materialist worldview. If you find this narrative compelling: are you aware Rand claims she has an alternative, a secular worldview with objective morality grasped by reason, with no faith or supernatural?

I get asked about my conversion to Catholicism a lot but always shied away from giving a serious response, twitter just didn't seem like the right forum Today's substack essay is that serious response, enjoy adorableandharmless.com/p/instinct-and…

@Lasermazer @shlevy It does impinge, but the reason you should care is that you can get more value out of other people by leaving them free than by enslaving them. It's wrong because it's not an effective way to live.

@wescarvalho2 @shlevy Rand at courses.aynrand.org/works/the-obje… says it's wrong to survive "by looting, robbing, cheating or enslaving the men who produce", but she has no problem with a man using domesticated animals for work, isn't diff that slavery impinges the exercise of reason/freedom of "man qua man"?

@Lasermazer @shlevy Well, no. She doesn't believe in essences. Her objectivity of moral truths comes from thinking that there's only one reason you need morality in the first place (to live instead of die). Any possible alternate morality is just arbitrarily made up to some extent.

@wescarvalho2 @shlevy But she believes in objective moral truths that follow from classification claims, like the idea that rationality is the essential quality of humanity (rather than, say, making art or humor), doesn't this imply claims about essences are objectively true, not just pragmatic?

@Lasermazer @shlevy But that doesn't mean that any classification scheme goes. There are certain distinctions that are necessary for achieving human goals.

@Lasermazer @shlevy She's pretty clear that she doesn't regard free will as an article of faith; it's something that's directly evident in your conscious experience. And she doesn't hold the "essentialist" position you're ascribing to her either; she agrees that we choose how to classify things.

@travis4nh In historical periods of deflation, all else has sometimes (AFAIK mostly?) _not_ been equal. Goods prices have decreased because of rising productivity, not shrinking money supply.

@travis4nh Yes, I realize money supply changes will cause CPI changes all else equal. But when you say "inflation" or "deflation," people reasonably assume you are talking about the change in CPI measurement, not about one specific cause, even if it's the dominant one today.

@travis4nh To make matters worse, most people probably don't even make the consumer prices versus money supply distinction, so they're just treating both cases as identical phenomena.

@travis4nh This is 90% of the disagreement here. When people say "inflation" (esp. "2% inflation") they're generally referring to CPI, not money supply. When you say "deflation," it's pretty natural to read you as saying "negative CPI" unless you clarify.
