I obtained data showing how many employees from each USDA subagency have taken deferred resignation offers — and where they were based. My latest with @DCSportsSteve (including charts and maps). agri-pulse.com/articles/23031…

I seldom share articles from "competitors" but this article from Joshua Baethge points to a typical USDA problem when a staffer won't allow a journalist to ask a question to a scientist after a public forum on an important topic. farmprogress.com/commentary/now…

USDA's trade undersecy and @RepAdrianSmith are holding a closed-door meeting with Nebraska farmers on Wednesday, but they want press to wait outside so they can pontificate afterwards. We need to stop covering these things unless we also hear what farmers are saying.

Following a shutdown 13 days ago, The Brookings Register was back in print today, under new ownership. The same is true this week for newspapers in Huron, Redfield and Flandreau. #localjournalism #newspapers

A statement from SDNA Executive Director @David_Bordewyk regarding today's news about the sudden closure of four South Dakota newspapers - Brookings Register, Moody County Enterprise at Flandreau, Huron Plainsman and the Redfield Press: "First off, my thoughts are with the employees and staff members and their families of these now-closed newspapers. Their livelihoods have been upended in a matter of hours and they all need our support now. "Secondly, this is a gut punch for community journalism in our state. No other way to put it. My hope is that solutions can be found quickly in the affected communities and local journalism can be restored and maintained. At South Dakota NewsMedia Association, we are working right now to answer questions and provide information and support as best we can." "If you have questions about publication of public notices in the affected communities, please contact me and we will try to answer those questions as best we can. Obviously, this is a developing situation that arose in just a matter of hours and so we are doing what we can to address issues regarding public notices. There are laws (chapter 17-2 in the state code) that address the publication of public notices when no legal newspaper exists within a municipality, district or county and what entities do when they must publish a notice in a newspaper."

This is awful and took the air from my gut (I also saw a former Iowa colleague yesterday lose his position). My thoughts are with @AHoltanRegister & everyone else affected. Please support local journalists. Don’t take for granted the service they provide or it will be gone

China is better positioned to retaliate against U.S. ag exports than in Trump 1.0 because Brazil's export capacity in key commodities has grown since 2018. Two graphs from @farmdocDaily this week really illustrate that point. Graph source: farmdocdaily.illinois.edu/2025/01/us-agr…

SCOOP: Tyson Foods has subpoenaed two news organizations, demanding they turn over notes and contacts with local farmers whom Tyson Foods put out of business. I've never seen such aggressive subpoenas issued by a major corporation to news media. investigatemidwest.org/2024/12/17/tys…

Most schools refused or offered limited info. But 14 sent along anonymized data that gave a distinct look at how the NIL market has functioned to date. Here's a sprawling look at what we found, including reporting from @AlbertSamaha, @EmilyGiam and me: washingtonpost.com/sports/interac…
