@willb

Always trying to simplify the complex unless there's an opportunity for an interdisciplinary analogy. (I'm on hiatus from most social media as of early 2023.)

Every computing infrastructure project that initially meets one need well will eventually expand in scope to only meet several needs poorly.

@Ji_Ha_Kim That’s a shame — hope it’s possible to try a different approach!

At the memorial for @rit, there were up to 50 people, who were the pillars of the #Scala community circa 2015. Covid and politics divided and atomized what was a vibrant and optimistic movement, weaving community across the world. A passing of a human being who was child-like, full of wonder and passion, makes the squabbles of the past superfluous. Brendan did not fit in this cynical, post-truth world. His memory united us again in shared humanity. Jamie Allen and Adam Murray have done a great service to us all by convening and leading the memorial. Memory of Brendan is alive while we remember him. Let us abandon old divisions and value each other’s humanity.

I may be missing something obvious, but could you run a base image with the system libraries and Python that you need and volume mount your project source? Also, I think you can use uv to make virtual environments that are not scoped to a project directory (see docs.astral.sh/uv/pip/environ… for more).

@HanchungLee You can't switch existing projects to different cuda/python using docker images.

For folks that don't use conda, how do you debug problems that only occur on some particular Python or CUDA version? With conda, I have a few envs set up with various python and CUDA versions, so I just activate one and get to work. With something like uv, what do you do?

@willb Gall was a pediatrician practicing at UMich Hospital System. His ideas resonate with yours. This is a surprisingly well researched and written.

This is exactly how people used to talk about emacs back in the 80s and 90s. vscode: emacs without the openness.

@KevinNaughtonJr it works and I don't need the RAM or the milliseconds. I truly don't! it's just good, and it acts as an FTP client, code editor and SSH in remote servers. It's just good, man.

@PaulWatsonNcl I promote very few secondary sources to a primary-source shelf but _The Duty Of Genius_ made the cut:

Amazing to think that Bertrand Russell only attracted 3 people to his 1912 lectures on Mathematical Logic .. and that we know their names (from Ray Monk's excellent biography of Wittgenstein)

@chriscleeland I have heart rate (but not power or cadence) in Apple Health from Zwift via Garmin Connect and HealthFit. You may need to enable Connect as a Health data source for HR in Settings. I know HealthFit will also import FIT files but that’s a lot of steps to get data from Zwift.

@willb Earlier this year. But HealthFit isn’t the final target for me—apple health is. To be clear, the event shows up in apple health, but useful data like heart rate isn’t included.

@chriscleeland hmm, interesting — when did this change happen? I was using it via Strava earlier this year but have gotten away from Zwift recently. (In any case, I was curious if something else would work and was able to sync a Zwift ride to HealthFit via Garmin Connect today.)

@willb That doesn’t work like it used to since Strava doesn’t push rides uploaded from 3rd parties into apple health.

@stuartbuck1 I’m reading that the other way around — that you don’t believe the nonsmoking section will be sufficiently free of smoke. It still seems unlikely to be a broadly applicable reason in 2024.

Trying to schedule a flight that is being paid for by a government agency, and the online system makes you choose the cheapest flight (regardless of convenience), or else provide an excuse. One of the possible excuses is that you need a flight that allows smoking. Amazing.

Partial evaluation and related topics have broad and deep applicability to things ML practitioners care about — cf. JAX, DSPy, and trace-based serialized model conversion for three more-or-less obvious examples!
Erik Meijer@headinthebox

Always cheer for people that can make money using math. venturebeat.com/ai/move-over-d… In my pitch I tried to appeal to the second Futamura projection (blog.sigfpe.com/2009/05/three-…) as a way to fine-tune a model to fine-tune models, but I was laughed out of the room. I guess there are even fewer people that understand partial evaluaton than there are that understand category theory ;-) While Khosla admits he does not understand the math-filled paper—pointing out there are very few people in the world who fully understand category theory—“when these really smart people gravitate to an idea, it’s an important idea,”
