THE NYC DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION ALTERNATIVES STRIKES AGAIN 46% of trips in NYC are walking. 32% are by vehicle. Less than 3% are by bicycle, a fringe form of transportation most commonly and empirically associated with juveniles. Yet, another vehicle lane will be removed replaced by a expanded bike lane and a 10-foot shoulder with trees, reducing road capacity, increasing congestion, increasing potential for pedestrian conflict, and further restricting emergency vehicle movement. This captured agency must be placed under federal receivership until the idealogical rot is excised.

It’s awful that so much space on the streets in major cities is dedicated to car storage.

@SamAntar You don’t get it. Many stations have 600+ trips per day in good weather and still hundreds most other days. There’s no way 3 to 5 parking spots serve that many users per day. Oh and Citibike pays a fee to use the spots. The large majority of car parking spots are free.

Would you rather spend $200 billion to bomb Iran or…? A: give every teacher in America a $62,500 bonus B: provide downpayment assistance for 20 million young families C: build 1,300 rural hospitals

I was around NYC in the 80s & the fetish for grit & crime I saw then & detect again now is, often, a style of decadent affluent narcissism. The fetishists rate their personal chances of being seriously harmed as rather low but they gain immediate psychic behefits from imagining themselves as -- and being seen by others as -- cool cats of the street. They also tend to have escape routes & pressure valves. I'm reminded of the wealthy Bob Marley fans at Princeton who summered on "the Cape." Not Kingston, Jamaica. Because when you can have the music of the slums and the fresh salt air of the Cape at the very same time, it's, well... Jammin'
