A backup lipolysis circuit to burn normally protected bone marrow fat without the normal adrenaline/noradrenaline stress pathway. Congrats to our collaborators on an elegant study.

Very happy to start 2026 by sharing our new manuscript in Nature Metabolism.✨ By studying the constitutive adipocytes in the bone marrow, we identified a brain-mediated pathway that bypasses the SNS to evoke massive fat loss. 🧠🦴 Full article here: lnkd.in/gH7eHv4r

The science funding system is BROKEN. PhDs and professors are spending their days writing grant proposals rather than conducting research that could transform millions of lives. And the worst part? The system REWARDS predictable, safe, incremental science. It PUNISHES radical ideas and moonshots.

@doristsao @AsteraInstitute Wow, that's a plot twist! Congratulations Doris, seems like an incredibly opportunity. Still thinking about what you showed at WashU a few months ago, some of the most exciting systems neuroscience results I’ve seen, can’t wait to see more!

I am deeply excited to share that I will be joining @AsteraInstitute to start a new effort to understand how the brain generates consciousness and intelligence.
Astera Institute@AsteraInstitute

We’re launching Astera Neuro, a new neuroscience research effort led by @doristsao as Chief Scientist. Our aim is to unravel a profound scientific mystery: how the brain transforms sensory inputs into conscious experience. Advancing this work could illuminate the computational principles that drive perception and cognition and inspire approaches for neuroscience-informed AI research, potentially generating new pathways to AGI. Astera will support this work with $600M+ over the next decade. Read more: astera.org/neuroscientist…

#ChatGPT5 is a letdown, not because it's not AGI, but because it's slow and then shy about discussing molecular biology "for safety reasons" Just canceled; Gemini's looking better

We can now define a set of rules of good science and automatically flag violations, and help users avoid violations. But we may kill creativity in the process. Which rules should we enshrine? How should we manage a system where some need rules and others are stifled by them?

@KordingLab you claim was in fact stronger, without RCT it's (almost) not even science: correlation (science/notScience) to isRCT is pretty high?

@KordingLab RCT != scientific rigor & in fact rigorous science has little to do with statistics

@KepecsLab Yes. Some people don’t randomize and compare a treated litter with another untreated litter :). But not sure what we may disagree on?

@KordingLab Not all randomized designs are RCTs. Not all controls are randomized. In fields where we can do experiments, we look for mechanisms not just through stats. And often the key isn’t what to do but what and how to ask

@KepecsLab I think the word just means a more to you than me. To me: randomized = assign is random. Controlled: there is treat and not treat. Trial: there is an intervention. So all your categories can be rcts to me.

@KordingLab RCTs are confirmatory, our experiments can be exploratory, observational, screens, and mechanistic, causal, computational etc... there is a BROAD range for how discovery happens

@KordingLab first, not all randomization is RCT, and RCTs are at best a narrow kind of causal inference without mechanistic insight

@KepecsLab as long as you don't want to make causal statements. Giving a bunch of random stimuli to an animal is an RCT!

@KepecsLab correlation (science/notScience) to isRCT is pretty high? But kidding aside, probably half of science is RCT?
