@johnrheritage @coolingreviews Yup. @pcper storage testbed was an i7-920 for several years. Was also on an X99 / 5820K for an even longer period. Switching CPUs meant retesting everything, so choices needed to be future proof, and ‘everything’ was a bit much near the end there :)

2600K was awesome.
3930K was pretty good too (6 core Sandy Bridge) though IIRC it launched a full year after 2600K. 5820K came more quickly.
I think @malventano bought a very future proof i7-920.
12600K still feels pretty strong too 3.5 years later.
Hard to say what was future proof on the AMD side. I have some long term favorites:
5x86-133 -- A 486 fast enough to play MP3s at a great price, though the race of 1998-2001 made this CPU age out in a few years.
Athlon K7 - the FPU was awesomely future proof, but the CPU race aged the first K7's a lot, and quickly.
Athlon 64 FX; great performance at launch but greatly overshadowed by dual cores a couple of years later.
Anything in AM4 -the platform was future proof, but no single processor here was/is.

i7-5820K - IMHO, the first multi-core CPU at a consumer price

@JoshDWalrath @brettglass The diesel ends up being run more often for quals and drills than anything else, and on SSBN’s it’s tricky squeezing in all of the necessary evolutions within the windows where making noise / being shallow is ok. So it’s run mostly to ensure readiness.

@brettglass @JoshDWalrath Also, your land based diesels are built on land based assumptions. Nuclear subs can have operational needs to run silent for months at a time, and their diesels are configured accordingly.

@malventano @JoshDWalrath I maintain several land-based diesel backup generators. They need to be started and run regularly. On a sub, that's going to be even more important to do. Several folks here on TwiXter who have served on nuclear subs have pointed this out.

@brettglass @JoshDWalrath I served on two. They don’t run them just to power loads as they are only run in emergencies or for maintenance. Many subs paint their diesel red to match other damage control gear. DC gear is never used for mundane tasks.

@brettglass @JoshDWalrath The ‘maintenance’ is just to ensure operation and is only typically a monthly. It is not operated to ‘power nonessential equipment’. The monthly requirement is typically pushed during patrol, where you can go months without operation. It’s not ever run ‘for the fun of it’.

@JoshDWalrath @brettglass Brett has it backwards. Nuclear subs treat the diesel as emergency equipment to be used only when the reactor is offline and shore power is not available. That said, it’s unwise to remain at sea with insufficient diesel to return to port in an emergency. Doubtful they ran so low.

@brettglass Not as far as I know. They do have diesel generators on board, but those are only used if the reactor is shut down and they do not have land power to restart the reactor. The reactor is only ever shut down in US ports. I can ask my friend @malventano who served on a nuke.

Thanks @Speenuh and others who have posted on @X about this. While we normally prioritize our paid FSD customers to the extent possible, there is a group of S/X customers (~3% of total FSD eligible vehicles) who have a different hardware which the @Tesla_AI team is working to validate. We have a rigorous safety validation cycle for every software update, and we are working as hard as possible to ship the latest builds to all customers. We don’t want to give false precision on timing until the validation can be completed, but want you to know we are focused on trying to solve this. Many of you have been with us on the FSD journey from the start and it’s super appreciated.

Yup, solved that one issue. But all of us legacy S/X owners still haven’t received v12 yet, with no official communication stating whether or not we even will. MCU1 FSD S/X owners have been living in the dark on this for years, and now MCU2 owners are beginning to be lumped into this group as well, at least it would seem on the surface. Being an early supporter and seeing folks who haven’t even bought in getting this update is deflating. An official communication from Tesla with some sort of reassurance that we’re not being left behind would go a long way for lots of us…

@baishen @Level1Techs @Phison_USA M.2 physical/electrical spec is fairly robust and reasonably futureproof. It's also used in servers. Much less reason to go the other way, but there are 2.5" U.2 NVMe cages available in desktop 5.25" form.

@alextyson_ @Level1Techs @Phison_USA I'm no longer with Solidigm, but they don't currently offer 4-8TB client SSDs regardless. For large editing arrays, I'd recommend @Phison_USA equipped @Sabrent Rocket 4 Plus - one of the few SSDs available in 8TB.
