With some of the recent discussion around it, I wanted to share this essay I wrote on Marx’s characteristic ambiguity and reading that ambiguity as an essentials pillar of his philosophy rather than as a historical accident. geesemag.com/marxs-material…

@CDMorlock @BolshevikBeyond Yes and every politician also calls themselves a champion of the working class. Everything is co-opted, there is no mysterious “non people” movement against some authentic “people” movement, you are just subdividing based off personal preference

It's most definitely not a form of class struggle, it's largely integrated directly into the DNC at this point, and advertising Imperialism at every opportunity it gets. The LGBTQ political movement, not the people themselves. The important lesson of the last 25 years of Marxoid "organization" is that identity itself is a bourgeois category outside of class struggle completely. No one has learned this lesson. And individual pride and vanity prevents class consciousness.

That people fail to see the global struggle by the reactionaries against queer people as such and trans women in particular *as* a form of class struggle, a class struggle from above, shows that many Marxists would not know class struggle if it bit them on the arse.

@pkgandakin @FalseConsc @morematerial No, it's an example of something that works well without being democratic. The belief that we should try to maximize "democracy" (meaning in simply "having votes") in every single thing is not a serious one.

Yes I think all leadership positions should be elected by general membership or appointed by people elected by general membership. Planning on elaborating in long-form :)
welcome to our trash revolution@trash_panda97

@morematerial are you suggesting that everyone should have to whip 1k votes for each of our many WGs in the largest chapter in the org in order to simply get a majority on any OC? this seems good to you? to me it seems like a recipe for election fatigue and basically nonstop whipping

@morematerial I think the local post office should ask everyone in the country before they make leadership decisions :) this is how we do socialism efficiently and get the best democracy.

Practically everything he found was price-gouging from contractors or outsourcing. The mindbending part of DOGE was that it was going to increase public spending by cutting public staff. Building state capacity saves money.
Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani@NYCMayor

Government must deliver for working people—and every dollar in our budget should work as hard as they do. That’s why I directed every agency to cut waste and help close our budget gap. Here’s some of what we found.

@MCDeiro @morematerial !! Does seizing the state legitimize the state? Does forming a party legitimize the party-form? Both will be abolished under communism, but the line drawn is arbitrary when posed this way, and self defeating

@pkgandakin @morematerial Government is one of the best ways for the left to get the attention we need to break through to wide swaths of the population. Like sure, it legitimizes govt in some ways, but we'll never reach the scale, expertise, and power we need to win without taking over parts of the state

The state is a relatively autonomous terrain of struggle, control over which is disproportionally impactful on organizing conditions in other terrains. Administering sections of the state effectively is a precondition for cohering a political pole capable of transforming it.
holdenn 🍺@comradejumpshot

but again... this is truly a project of state-legitimation rather than transformation -- yes cutting ties with Mckinsey is always good but my goal as a socialist is not to administer the bourgeois state more effectively than the reactionaries

@SATaravine @pkgandakin @moistcoffeecake I mean I let this take out only because long haul maintained their majority. I think they'll have more legitimacy now they've overcome this challenge. Not really allowed to be called fringe anymore. Only possible with this election.

Views are my own yada yada, but I think it's fine / good to elect committee/wg leadership from the membership as a whole. The constituency at the local level is the members of the chapter. Deference to expertise is a hinderance imo.

@bioleera @pkgandakin @moistcoffeecake A full voting member of a democratically run organization isn't "butting in" by engaging w work critical to the org. They own it as much as the people directly involved. This "butting in" notion is liberal pluralism, a recipe for siloing, disorganization, and lack of unity.

@moistcoffeecake It stunts the growth of membership development. The correct strategy can still fail if its not wholly understood. I believe citizens should have oversight over the military despite no expertise. I think silos ultimately are conflict avoidant compromises.

@BolshevikBeyond @m1sswrldgrrrl94 It’s important that as Marxist we always remember that class struggle in its pure, abstracted form, never really happens. The class struggle is always mediated by a number of varying factors which give it its specificity

@peakcapitolism committees doing core internal functionality should be leadership appointed, issue/organizing based areas should be chapterwide elections. WGs being able to determine their own membership criteria is messy

the roko's basilisk guys are so funny bc they correctly intuit that our lives will be controlled by a psychotic, amoral algorithm that hates humanity but they think some nerd in SF is going to build it on his macbook. it was already built, in 1602, by the Dutch

claude cowork is making me think maybe we’ll look back and it’ll be obvious that humans were never meant to spend their lives working behind a screen. we’ll see it as inevitable that computers do everything for us on computers and the future of work is cooler than we can imagine
