With some of the recent discussion around it, I wanted to share this essay I wrote on Marx’s characteristic ambiguity and reading that ambiguity as an essentials pillar of his philosophy rather than as a historical accident. geesemag.com/marxs-material…

This quote holds a lot of relevance today in our current struggle as we see the establishment liberals levy symbolic condemnations against the Maga regime, but refuse to use the full weight of their institutional power to actually hamper the fascist takeover.

@jefglass @erraticleninist @its_mccarthy Yes, + the idea that the state fills functions that are necessary for ‘maintaining’ the general society required for capitalism but aren’t tools of direct class oppression and so are not driven by narrow capitalist interests

@pkgandakin @erraticleninist @its_mccarthy I'm a short attention span on theory, but I think of relative autonomy as like shorthand to avoid having to explain that the state is subject to class forces and riven by conflicts between class fractions. Accurate enough for informal twitter chatter?

No argument no engagement just “nuh uh”. If you read the original tweet, it’s obvious that no one is claiming relative autonomy in the context of democratic rights, but because of the fact that we actually, empirically, etc. can struggle over parts of the State to pursue our objectives. Lenins thesis on the state refers to fundamental power—there is no straight line from occupying positions in bourgeois democracy to socialist democracy, but there is one between occupying those positions and the tasks of cohering a pole for revolution. Our goal is to smash the bourgeois state, and we shall—**we already are**—use the bourgeois state to do so
Judith C.@WithoutJudith

The autonomy of the state is an illusory autonomy. It immediately appears as autonomous because it has the abstract form of a democratic system, but it is mediated by capital all the way down. Holding elected office does not prove the autonomy of the state, even ‘relatively.’

That people fail to see the global struggle by the reactionaries against queer people as such and trans women in particular *as* a form of class struggle, a class struggle from above, shows that many Marxists would not know class struggle if it bit them on the arse.

@pkgandakin This is why you see the maga regime weakening the democratic institutions and attempting to tighten voting laws. It’s not just out of discontent for liberal values, but out of discontent for the relative breathing room the bourgeois-democratic system allows for the proletariat

simple solution. the elements of the state directly concerned with imperialism cannot be used in favor of the working class, those that are not, can. Ie., instead of asking if the State is infected unlike Kerala's, we ask: What institutions and powers does Kerala and our current situation have in common that we can exploit?

@pkgandakin I feel like the experience of Kerala in India only proves this. Granted comparing America as an imperialist power to India, but still I think some helpful generalizations can be made

@dannman47 @morematerial Some narrow and simple examples that do not require even using state power creatively: Mamdani's landlord struggle sessions, liberal NLRB, using office/elections as soapboxes

@pkgandakin @morematerial I don’t see how a communist consciousness can be shaped through involvement in the administration of the bourgeois state

The state is a relatively autonomous terrain of struggle, control over which is disproportionally impactful on organizing conditions in other terrains. Administering sections of the state effectively is a precondition for cohering a political pole capable of transforming it.
holdenn 🍺@comradejumpshot

but again... this is truly a project of state-legitimation rather than transformation -- yes cutting ties with Mckinsey is always good but my goal as a socialist is not to administer the bourgeois state more effectively than the reactionaries

Yes I think all leadership positions should be elected by general membership or appointed by people elected by general membership. Planning on elaborating in long-form :)
welcome to our trash revolution@trash_panda97

@morematerial are you suggesting that everyone should have to whip 1k votes for each of our many WGs in the largest chapter in the org in order to simply get a majority on any OC? this seems good to you? to me it seems like a recipe for election fatigue and basically nonstop whipping
