With some of the recent discussion around it, I wanted to share this essay I wrote on Marx’s characteristic ambiguity and reading that ambiguity as an essentials pillar of his philosophy rather than as a historical accident. geesemag.com/marxs-material…

Something you must always admire about the French Revolutionaries & the Bolsheviks is their unflinching pursuit of racial equality in a world where extreme racism was the default setting

Why is there a communist magazine and a band called “Geese” that just came out of nowhere in the last couple years. Why the name Geese

@MarcoFoster_ @RepAOC @TeamAOC 100%. When history looks back, the development of socialism will seem as natural and humane—as morally necessary and historically inevitable—as every progress in American history has been

AOC: “MAGA is the last dying breath of the confederacy. In response to a confederacy, we have this moment here of liberation, abolition, and revival of the values that make this country actually great. We have every freedom that we have today because somebody in each generation refused to accept the world as it was”

Fascinating anecdote by Cuban Trotskyist Idalberto Ferrera Acosta about his time in prison under Castro. Truly taking ‘critical support’ of the Cuban regime to another level lol.

@whoisomariam I actually think this is a good way to put it. In one of the early geese documents, I wrote: “If Dante is descending into Hell, we are descending into Hell right there with him.” Let’s leave it at that.

This is exactly my point as to how the task of a socialist movement should be to grow the alternative like a rose from the cracks in its concrete. You are asking to sink further into the concrete until we magically find a rose.

Ur misunderstanding the critique — it is a critique of following the positions of the masses and reproducing the cycle. It is levied at the Mensheviks for arguing they should do eg labor organizing instead of (at the time) the national struggling for a constitution. The critique is inverted: both the liquidationists and the Menshevik super independents reproduce the cycle of bourgeois rule, the former by refusing to challenge it formally, the latter refusing to challenge it practically. You are the tailist here. Following the masses is the 101 of politics. Re why specifically the Dem party this answer I think puts it well:

The vote for Dems can’t be rooted in the tailist belief that they may come around to socialism. Its that we know that they’re opportunistic, and that in the exposure of their opportunism in power there will be an opening where we can make clear the further necessity for socialism
rskhm (蝋燭姫) 🟥@rskhm__

Geese magazine frustrates because they make extremely good historically literate and interesting arguments but then they also argue that we have to tail the democratic party which is collapsing the necessity/contingency dialectic

@whoisomariam @RebarSpear @harbingerofwoke Ofc they won’t make the argument, that’s why we as communists exist. If they said these things they’d be the communists. We know that their approach only reproduces the cycle, that does not mean the cycle does not exist. We need to intervene and smash it. The cycle is our failure

@MCDeiro @whoisomariam @harbingerofwoke I actually thought of this specifically and put “politically” as a qualifier so I could be like “I meant mainstream politics” if someone tried to get me on that… if only it wasn’t you… Jokes aside I agree 100%

@pkgandakin @whoisomariam @harbingerofwoke This is only partially right. Lot's of people did actually start to do it. Bernie would not have seen such a fertile ground if it weren't for occupy, BLM, and a burgeoning socialist tradition that began to take root. So I think that history vindicates PK's position, even under O

@RebarSpear @pkgandakin @harbingerofwoke More like the people we endorse inside the Dems will be too timid and reticent to “eat them from the inside” because they want to be good junior partners in the coalition. The Dems are already an unpopular shell meaning we already have our opportunity.

Hmm well that would be an incorrect conclusion, so I’m glad we cleared it up. The whole point is that the Dems cannot reach hegemony —for them to actually do this is to kill the whole system. The contradictions are internal. The revolution can only happen with mass participation, mass change, exploding the bounds of politics, *through the existent contradiction*, that there is a political war. For the Dems to each “hegemony” is for them to be pierced through, where the contradictions of the democratic revolution are not managed by the bourgeoise (politically: the neoliberals), ie, under Obama, where the movement is demobilized, the working class is crushed, and why? Because they are left alone, because the bourgeois has successfully taken progress and co-opted it—incorrect formula, they do not coopt it , they kill it. But it is precisely at that site where the communist can and should stand, with the demands, radicalizing the demands to their extreme (!!!!) and preventing the cooption of the masses. It is there that we have the most ability to actually provide an answer and a structure and a POLITICS—not by standing outside where people are, by pushing their progressive POLITICAL demands and sentiments to the maximum, not trying to “teach them our theory”. This is Lenin.

@pkgandakin @harbingerofwoke Okay maybe I’m misunderstanding but the article is arguing that we can’t take advantage of popular discontent with Dem opportunism until it *really* reaches a head under, not just Dem victory, but a lasting Dem HEGEMONY. Sounds like a True Path to me
