WSJ has a nice article on Trump’s decision making process. I commented a bit on how to read Trump in my last FSD video. The WSJ article confirms the idea that Trump is pragmatic not ideological. He also throws out extreme anchors to negotiate. Observations: 1) Admin severely miscalculated the speed of SoH closure. US military war gaming was flawed. Advisors did not see the SoH closure coming so quickly. 2) Trump wants a TACO. He does not want casualties. His advisors see the conflict as a political albatross. 3) Trump gained over-confidence from Venezuela success and thought decapitation strikes would cause compliance 4) Trump’s ‘end civilization’ comment was a type of extreme anchor for negotiation. Even though that term is reprehensible, the point is that comment was Trump’s style of negotiating. WSJ says he wanted to ‘scare the Iranians’. (Incidentally, that was the day stocks sold off too much and I said it was time to start buying stocks. Fade fear.) 5) Trump was conscious about his words’ impact on stock markets Having a Trump ‘Theory of Mind’ is necessary to navigate the wild swings. The main takeaway here is that there is a Trump Put. DoD miscalculated. He wants out. He is sensitive to economic costs and will TACO. The article helps to clarify Trump’s utility function. Now we have to make sense of the disparate factions of the IRGC… The S&P bottom is intact despite the volatility ahead.

The q is whether the low- and med-level soldiers of IRGC, Basij, police, etc will kill people if they haven't been paid in 3, 6, 12 months and US is dangling carrot of getting paid if they turn against the IR.

I don’t know what has been presented in the White House, but this is the adversary status I would present, with one important Takeaway - At this stage, the most important requirement for U.S. policy is strategic realism about what the use of force can still achieve against Iran. 1. Iran’s leadership is not interested in prolonging the war, but it believes it holds an advantage in a “pain tolerance” competition vis-à-vis the United States and the international community. 2. Threats of force are unlikely to produce meaningful concessions in negotiations. Iran is expected to hold firmly to the red lines it has maintained from the outset. 3. Maritime pressure will not compel Iranian capitulation. Absent an agreement, it is more likely to lead to direct confrontation between the U.S. and Iran. A broader campaign against Iran’s civilian infrastructure could severely damage its economy, but would almost certainly trigger wide-scale retaliation, particularly against energy infrastructure across the Gulf. 6. Without regime change, which would require a dramatic U.S. investment in time, resources, and political will, these core dynamics are unlikely to shift. 7. Decision-making in Iran is becoming more fragmented and hardline, increasingly shaped by the IRGC. This makes coherent compromise more difficult than in the past. 8. What Iran did not concede before or during the conflict, it is even less likely to concede now, regardless of military pressure or blockade measures. 9. In the absence of a deal, escalation is not a risk, it is the default trajectory. Iran is already preparing for it, including efforts to rebuild and reinforce its missile capabilities. 10. To date, even successful operational achievements have not meaningfully changed Iran’s strategic calculus. April 7: $950M short — hours before the US-Iran ceasefire. April 17: $760M short — 20 minutes before Hormuz declared open. The CFTC is investigating. The ‘peace trade’ was sold to retail. Someone else got out first. Who knew?

Well, this video is pretty declarative from the Iranian side: Iran’s enriched uranium is framed as being as sacred as the country’s soil (a low bar for this regime, but will gloss over that for now), and won’t be transferred abroad. Looks like either the US or Iran are fibbing…

🚨Not to be dismissed. No deal is at hand yet and Iranian hardliners (sample 👇: commentator, professor, IRGC-linked semi-official news agency) are already critical of Iran’s alleged “concessions.” This dynamic (aka criticism of Iranian gov positions from the regime’s own hard right flank is not merely a 2-level game (CC: Putnam: 1988) for leverage, but an actual position derived from their anti-accommodationist and anti-American ideology and “principles.” US hawks did not largely seem to understand/care back in 2015-2018 about how the JCPOA could have at once been a fatally flawed nuclear deal for the US and also one which hardline elites in Tehran opposed and railed against as a concession and even treason. This dynamic will matter very much to those trying to make sense of elite politics in a post-Khamenei Islamic Republic, as well as where the remnants of society that are pro-regime are. It will also matter very much to those looking to press upon those fault lines and cleavages in a post-war scenario vis a vis the rump regime.
