@samhaselby @shahanSean @ear2thepavement It’s dumb to categorize voters’ priorities based on geography, without considering the significant class, racial, and educational differences that transcend geographical boundaries and have a much greater influence on their decision-making.

Deindustrialization in the Rust Belt destroyed an entire society. All the good jobs were destroyed, replaced with absolutely nothing except jibber jabber about "knowledge economy" and financialization producing centibillionaires. People all want the same thing, more or less.
Elissa Slotkin@ElissaSlotkin

If Democrats want to win, we have to listen to the middle of the country. What works on the coasts doesn't automatically work in places like Michigan, Iowa, or Ohio. Figure out what works in the middle, and the rest follows.

@shahanSean @ear2thepavement @samhaselby Boston is much more similar to Chicago than it is to Fall River. And Fall River is much more similar to Youngstown than it is to Boston. The economic crisis transcends geography.

@ear2thepavement @samhaselby I (a Midwesterner) thinks she's right about trying to win the Midwest first and allowing the coasts to sort themselves out rather than trying to bring (urban) coastal politics into the Mid West.

@Seanfucious @Perrid13 @bdquinn The first thing the next democratic president needs to do is sign a far reaching anti-corruption executive order that takes back all this money and confiscates any assets purchased with it. There needs to be zero tolerance for all of this.

@Perrid13 @bdquinn The fact they paid 5mil to Ashley Babbit 1.5mil to Carter Page 1.25mil to Michael Flynn Is going to be talked about and written in history textbooks, especially if Trump gets a personal settlement from the IRS as well

Trump 2.0 has been so brazenly corrupt that it's kind of overwhelmed our sensors. Massive amounts of self-dealing and preferential treatment of donors plus punishing perceived enemies (see Anthropic vs. OpenAI and Musk). It seems to have broken through, though.
Benjy Sarlin@BenjySarlin

By end of Trump’s first term, D’s were convinced corruption was mostly a dead end, which in turn convinced Trump he could go way further in Trump II, and now it sees to be gaining more steam with voters and in D messaging

@TheAleksee Elizabeth Warren spent all of 2018 promising she was dedicated to Massachusetts and wasn’t running for president, and then promptly formed her committee not even a month after her reelection. It’s very taboo to say you’re running before the current election cycle is over

@nikicaga If they actually drew this district, the neighboring district that would be formed from the cape+south shore+south coast might even be more competitive at the congressional level

@Jason9218829550 @LachlanFrancis @conorsen North Carolina’s new seat would also most likely have to be blue given how maxed out Rs are there. Arizona’s too possibly, or at least one of the swing seats would have to become more blue.

@LachlanFrancis @conorsen It would be pretty easy for the northern states to ensure that they lose Republican seats if Dems are in control of the state legislatures. Big if though.

It’s like 6 steps away so not worth more than a tweet but Dem trifecta in 2028 -> huge red wave in Trumpless midterm in 2030 would probably let the GOP draw some pretty aggressive maps in 2031, not sure what Dems can do to be proactive here.

@MargieKonert @Andrevin20 @mschlapp The secret about eliminating income taxes that they don’t tell you is that you’re about to be hit with a hell of a property tax bill. Money moves but the land can’t, and you just bought a whole lot of it.

How many rural Virginians are looking at Zillow to see where we all go next. VA will be the latest to drive away those who can leave. Gov of West VA should pay moving expenses and abate taxes for 3 years for those who own guns, have taxable income and want their vote to count

@pj_chesterfield @maxdubler They don’t consider it historic, it’s basically the only bar in Boston with a parking lot, so they’re all mad at not being able to drunk drive home as easily.

@maxdubler And I’ll guess the reason they consider it ‘historic’ is because of the grisly mob rubout that took place there, right? I remember seeing the front page of the NY Daily News of Carmine Galante with a cigar still in his mouth. Do we need to save that place?

The real fucking joke here is this attitude of a chain restaurant being more important than homes for people to live in that's made this city and state so fucking expensive to live in. Would love it if the 99 could remain ground floor of the building but its not my property so
Mac@cheapiemac

Biggest joke I’ve ever seen. Everyone in Boston knows this 99 deserves historical status. We can’t be ripping out everything that makes Boston great for soulless shitty apartment buildings. There are empty buildings in seaport. Lower the cost instead of destroying the city.

@cheapiemac @OttoVonBello @B1Gwheat Commercial conversion is expensive as hell. You have to refit the plumbing, electrical wiring, hvac, floor plan, etc for residential use. You’re essentially building a new building from the inside out, and it that point it just becomes cheaper to build a new building elsewhere

@OttoVonBello @B1Gwheat This is true — and Im not arguing with that. What I would say though, is that there are plenty of vacant office buildings that could be repurposed before we start demolishing neighborhood gems. Why get rid of the character of the city before the lifeless parts of it?

I don't know if it's true today but back when I was applying to college Hampshire was a place where you picked if you wanted to smoke weed and write poetry, and generally had a "wealthy white kid with dreads" rep. Kind of a high sticker price for that.
Dr. Clayton Forrester@DrClaytonForre1

Hampshire College costs $77,752 per year to attend, or $311,008 for a 4-year bachelor's degree. That includes tuition, housing, dining and miscellaneous fees. In the current economy, it would be almost impossible for any student paying this to generate a positive return on investment. In a few years, many small liberal arts colleges like Hampshire will close their doors forever.
