As conversations on health product security continue to gain momentum across Africa, @MSF Access convened an expert roundtable on 27 March to examine the promise and practical realities of local and regional manufacturing in Eastern and Southern Africa. Norah Ratemo, Director General, Kenya Development Corporation (KDC) took part in the Pharmaceutical & Healthcare Panel at KIICO, contributing to critical conversations on unlocking patient and affordable capital for the health sector. As Kenya’s premier Development Finance Institution, KDC has prioritized healthcare as a strategic sector, recognizing its critical role in driving economic growth while strengthening national resilience. To address sector-specific financing gaps, KDC deploys a blended suite of instruments: • Project Finance – Providing long-term, patient capital aligned to the sector’s extended gestation periods • Asset Finance – Enabling acquisition of critical equipment to support expansion and efficiency • Equity Investments – Taking minority stakes in high-impact, scalable ventures • Working Capital Facilities – Bridging liquidity gaps across the healthcare value chain KDC goes beyond the provision of capital by actively supporting project preparation and offering advisory services that help transform early-stage concepts into bankable, investment-ready opportunities. This approach ensures that investments are not only financed, but also structured for sustainability and scale. Unlocking investment in the healthcare sector will require a more coordinated and deliberate approach. Africa’s market for medicines and vaccines is worth over US$50 billion each year, yet less than 1% of the vaccines used on the continent are manufactured in Africa. Today at @AfricaCDC, I opened the African Manufacturing Pre-Marketplace Forum, co-organised by Africa CDC and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance (@gavi) — a concrete step toward changing that reality. Health sovereignty requires more than ambition. It requires predictable demand, regulatory strength, sustainable financing, and buyers willing to commit to African-made products. Our goal is clear: 60% of Africa’s vaccine needs manufactured on the continent by 2040. Africa already has 574 active manufacturers across the health-products landscape, including 25 involved in vaccine production. The work now is to connect supply with demand, unlock investment, and build a market that sustains African manufacturing at scale. ____ L’Afrique représente un marché de plus de 50 milliards de dollars US par an pour les médicaments et les vaccins, pourtant, moins de 1 % des vaccins utilisés sur le continent y sont fabriqués.
