ETF trading volume is exploding: US-listed ETF trading volume is up to ~$7.8 trillion so far in March, the highest monthly total on record. This exceeds the March 2020 pandemic volume by $1.5 trillion. Even excluding the S&P 500 ETF, $SPY, the Nasdaq 100 ETF, $QQQ, and the Russell 2000 ETF, $IWM, volume stands at ~$5.4 trillion, an all-time high. Meanwhile, US-listed ETFs have posted 47 consecutive monthly inflows, the longest streak on record. By comparison, the previous record streak was 31 months, set in 2020-2021. As a result, total US-listed ETF assets are up to $13.5 trillion, an all-time high. The US ETF industry has never been bigger.

Gold has reclaimed the $4,600 level and is up well over $100 intraday (sitting in the $4,598–$4,624 zone as of right now), confirming the reversal from yesterday’s close around $4,570. The war backdrop—U.S./Israeli strikes on Iran since late February, Iran’s closure/disruption of the Strait of Hormuz (20%+ of global oil supply), and oil now well north of $110—has flipped the script. What started as a classic “risk-asset” sell-off in gold during the first wave of the conflict (liquidity grab, stronger dollar) has now morphed into textbook safe-haven demand plus negative real yields and renewed de-dollarization momentum.

Gold is up over $100, back above $4,600. The war has improved the bullish fundamentals for precious metals. The result will be diminished U.S. credibility and accelerated de-dollarization. For the U.S. that means more debt, higher interest rates, rising inflation, and recession.
