@Shpigford If you haven't seen it, this NYT "Buy vs Rent" calculator is brilliant: nytimes.com/interactive/20… It allows you to put in your own assumptions, costs, loan costs, etc. ... and then tells you which is better financially. (of course, even then ... it's still an emotional decision)

i 100% get the emotional reaction people have about "throwing away money on rent" but this is spot on. owning a home has an obscene number of hidden maintenance costs and mental overhead.

@BrettFromDJ So in that case, it’s a legitimate “chargeback” and the processor/bank is right to deny your evidence … because the owner of the card didn’t receive your service. It 100% sucks and you’re the victim of a scam - but that helped me at least understand the situation better

Chargebacks suck. A design agency paid Designjoy $5,000 for two branding projects and a website. After everything was done, they initiated a chargeback for the full amount. I thought, “there’s no way I’m losing this”. After all, I had: - Every word of communication - Proof that requests were done in 48 hrs or less - Constant approvals from client (they loved everything) - The Figma files showing the work was done My evidence was clear, insanely thorough, and organized. Despite everything being submitted, I just lost the dispute. No reason provided. The client gets to take all the work I did, and get their $5k back. In the end, it actually cost me to work for the client, since the merchant pays a chargeback fee whether they win or lose. The injustice of it all astounding.

One thing that can save you a lot of pain in a variety of contexts is a good null hypothesis. I like to think of it as an inconvenient truth that is probably correct. Something you should assume is true until you disprove it with strong evidence. Some examples...

@Colleran Yeah, this is probably the most secure plan, but for an unknown reason I'm scared as hell to focus solely on this one.

I am failing. I have a few months left to make it. ❌ AirCal - AI calendar with supa powa. Built a team. Spent $15K. Failed at 0$ MRR 🥹 (2023) ❌ WhisperIt - speech to text on macOS. Never released. 0$. Using it locally. ❌ Technical Joy - CTO as a Service (2023) - failed. 0$. ❌ Baboom - won a grant of $20K 🎉 but the app generated only 400$ and at 16$ MRR 😭. Burnt $2K for ads, ElevenLabs and OpenAI. (2023-2034) ❌ SwissLawGPT - dropped due to big local player (2024) ❌ Meetme . io is generating $1K per month. Peak at 2K 9 months ago. (since 2017) See? Failure does exist. The journey is amazing. But it's very hard.

@Colleran Not purposefully satire. My choice to drive was for reasons not related to safety, more about the experience and wanting to do some overlanding along the way. Yeah, my comment is a mischaracterization. Also learning people read the comments of comments. I'll do better.

This is the 737NG, from 1997, the generation BEFORE the 737 Max, so it's unrelated to that Boeing's planes were fine before the 737 Max and 787 Dreamliner So all these issues we're seeing seems more related to airlines (also outside US) massively outsourcing their maintenance to cheaper countries to save money And maybe that's where corners are cut: "In 2018 the Transport Workers Union (TWU) claimed that among the five largest carriers in the U.S., Southwest outsourced 52% of its maintenance, United outsourced 51%, Alaska outsourced 49%, Delta outsourced 43% and American outsourced 33%."

@jonryanedge I can’t tell if this comment is satire … Boeing has real issues, we won’t deny that. But commercial air travel in the US is much, much, much safer than driving the equal distance.
