Breaking aviation news out of NYC, where an Air Canada regional jet has collided with a vehicle. Early indications confirm the vehicle was cleared to cross Runway 04 at taxiway D… as Air Canada jet was landing on the 7000 foot runway.

What we know so far: At LaGuardia Airport in Queens, an Air Canada Express jet en route to Montreal collided with a fire truck on the runway. The cockpit of the aircraft has sustained significant damage. Officials have confirmed at least two fatalities, with approximately 70 people injured. Among those injured, at least four firefighters are reported to be in critical condition.

An initial impression listening to ATC audio — it would appear one controller was simultaneously working ground and directing aircraft (as evidenced by go-around instructions to Delta flight after accident). This raises serious concerns about staffing.

@MatthewCappucci Maybe a hot take, but I would not be opposed to deploying military air traffic controllers to assist with staffing shortages. This isn't a problem that can be fixed overnight.
