Again, far too late. State and the admin blew this-and it’s a reflection of hallowed out expertise from a DOGE inspired reduction in 1/4 of their workforce and politicized leadership. This call would have been much far sooner in normal times. The Iranian reaction was absolutely predictable. Potential attacks on US facilities was all we talked about last week, pre-war.

Called the State Department emergency number because the advisory said “depart via commercial means” and to call if you need assistance arranging departure. Airspace is shut. Airports aren’t functioning. Airlines can’t be reached. After 30 minutes on the line, they read back the same security update posted online. I understand protocols. I understand thresholds for evacuation. But telling Americans to “depart now” when there are no commercial options and offering no practical pathway is frustrating to say the least:

One of the most important jobs the embassies do is rendering assistance to Americans abroad. This is unforgivable in an instance where the problem was created by an administration that clearly made no advance efforts to provide the predictably-needed aid to Americans.

So the State Department is forcing everyone to immediately leave the region but is also refusing to help people leave the region.
The strike itself is illegal and disastrous but their lack of readiness for what comes next is unforgivable as well.
