@yrechtman They carry cargo (ups, FedEx, USPS etc) underneath with the checked bags. Depending on route it’s worth about $0.20-$0.50 per lb. A 50lb bag is worth about $20 in offset cargo value.

It is so hilariously obvious that the optimal arrangement for airlines is to offer a free checked bag and charge for overhead bin space

@JetboyMT @MarkOnSocialnet @interesting_aIl We do have a lot more money, but you're wrong about our houses being bigger and nicer. Wood costs as much as steel in Germany so they build with steel framing, which is better. Also many properties there are hundreds of years old and have been upgraded every few decades.

@interesting_aIl In europe we build more massive from the ground to the roof. If you build a house who will last some decades, you have to build it massive.

Genuinely kind of shocked neither Alito or Thomas have retired yet. Why gamble with dems winning the Senate this year when you could retire now in your mid 70s and have a 100% chance of getting another conservative replacement.

@CocoaTrebles @Winter_Six Depends on the failure. Lots of ways to get injured by system failure. Decompressing rapidly Oxygen levels too high or low Bleed gas cooling failure - overheated cockpit Or even an ecu failure causing high G forces as it loses control.

@Winter_Six That’s a cogent analysis but it ignores the verbiage used by the CENTCOM spokesman who said the pilot is in “stable condition.” You don’t go to the hospital for an inflight system failure.

WHAT I THINK HAPPENED: 1). Regular F-35 flight gets cancelled midair because the pilot noticed something wrong with his plane. Squawked on their emergency channel and flew to a friendly base.

Whoever decided that Arizona was the best place for data centers must be absolutely braindead. Up to 120° for over half of the year. Genius. 🙄

@tobinjstone @YeahLikeTheSoup It’s really just land access. All the good places are Forest Service land and the USFS won’t let anyone be built.

@YeahLikeTheSoup I believe something like 95% of ski resorts in America were built 5+ decades ago. Yes, saturation of prime locations is part of why no new resorts got built, but the other reason is that the environmental regulations passed in the 70s made new resorts essentially impossible.

no one wants to hear this, but the best way to address the dual problems of high ticket prices and overcrowding at ski resorts would just be to make it easier to open up new ski resorts across America

Sincere question: if jet fuel prices triple is there a chance airlines rescind tickets already sold for later in the year at a cheap price?

There are no pure labor, ditch digger jobs anymore. You dig ditches and potholes with a Hydro vac truck or a small excavator. The idea that construction or field service people don’t have highly refined technical knowledge and experience Is just freaking insane. It’s equally insane to assume that you’re gonna teach somebody how to do this and to diagnose every problem in just a few short months. Takes a decade if you can find a 22-year-old kid who’s willing to do it and likes it. It’s like people think this is like 1920 or something. It’s so bananas.

@funder Name changes are done through Social Security by presenting documentation of the name change. Names are NOT changed on a birth certificate. You get a new SS card with the new name, take it to the DMV and you have the documentation you need to vote!

@dantypo That’s true. But the primary driver isn’t the cost of the building. It’s the land. Look at new home prices in low land price areas. They’re very reasonable.

I do to. So that once and for all we can remember these low quality pieces of shit for what they really are and wistfully dreaming that they are not. Many of them are good platforms for modification, none of them were good quality dependable vehicles. None I have personally owned and driven vehicles built by the same manufacturer from the 60's,70's,80's,90's,2000's,2010'sand 2020's. The 2020's are /were better vehicles by every measure by leaps and bounds.

@bigtar @C_Note99 @vegasstarfish @AlaskaAir I don’t think you understand how airport security works. Passengers cannot get off of aircraft and enter into a secured area through just any door that might be intended for airline and airport personnel with SIDA badges.

Hey @AlaskaAir we’ve been on the tarmac in Seattle for almost 4 hours with no update. They don’t have a gate for us. Our plane is just driving around in circles. We missed our connection to Tokyo. Any guidance would be appreciated.

@vegasstarfish @AlaskaAir It’s a really unfortunate situation to be stuck on a plane for so long but it’s not really the airlines fault that heavy snow and ice accumulated and disrupted operations. The airline can’t just park the plane on a taxiway and bus you guys off if all the gates are taken.

Although the lobster conversation on social media has grown legs, there is a larger conversation that should be had. In the 1980s, 18% of the country were veterans. That number is now down to around 6%. Less and less Americans know someone who has served. There is a disconnect between the American people and those who serve them. Until that gap is closed, there will be a lack of understanding around what service members and veterans go through. Today it’s lobster, tomorrow it’s veteran’s benefits.
