@PatrickBury The more pertinent point is that looking forward, the peace dividend has ended, money needs to be invested in defence, energy and food security. What leader is going to stand up and say the welfare state is over, pensions need to be frozen and productivity must be prioritised?

The Iran war has caused a lot of people to clock how thin UK defences actually are. But the uncomfortable truth is: Brexit has made the economy ~4% smaller. That’s ~£100bn/year; £35–45bn/year less tax. And the current Defence budget? ~£60bn. Without Brexit we could have maintained a military fit for purpose, a better NHS… and less potholes! Instead we’re arguing about which to prioritise while having permanently shrunk the economy that pays for it. Brexit was an act of strategic self harm that has left Britain economically and militarily weaker, right as the world gets more volatile …

@Euan_MacDonald Best thing for me, there has been a realisation that the US is not an ally to Ukraine, Trump and his cronies are compromised by money or Kompromat and the shackles are off... Europe needs Ukraine to be at the heart of the military alliance for the end of US hegemony

Is the tide finally turning? Ukraine's air campaign is expanding just as fascist Russia is experiencing shortages of air defense interceptor missiles, as well as accuracy problems with the ballistic missiles it uses to attack Ukraine (likely due to Ukrainian attacks on Russian missile production sites). On the ground, Ukraine has been killing more invading Russian troops that Russia can recruit for the last three months or so - the net Russian force deficit per month is now around 5,000 troops. At sea, Ukraine has expanded the geography of its strikes on the Russian shadow oil tanker fleet to the Mediterranean. Meanwhile, Trump is too distracted by his war on Iran to do much to aid Putin.

Massive Ukrainian bombing raid on three Russian chemicals plants in Togliatti on the Volga, some 600 miles away. It’s as far from Ukraine as Switzerland or Denmark.

@v_j_freeman @MarkDavies67 @Mr_Andrew_Fox Deliberately misleading. What is true - UK would benefit from tax & jobs. Some security of supply advantages. What is NOT true - UK does not get cheaper gas just because it’s produced domestically because it will sell at market price and the NBP & TTF are closely linked.

As someone with many years involvement in the physical movement of natural gas around Europe from field to end customer the ignorance in this post physically pains me.
Zoe Gardner@ZoeJardiniere

It is blowing my mind how many people don’t seem able to grasp that oil & gas in the North Sea is not “ours” but was sold off to private companies who will trade it on the international market like any other fuel. We don’t get any kind of privileged access to this fuel.

It’s illogical for Vance to be going to a small 9.5M person country like Hungary of all places on a trivial matter, while the U.S. is 5 weeks into a war with Iran - with pilots crashing and F15’s being lost. Unless there’s something bigger at play. I.e., 1) Secret back-channeling with Russia occurring with some horse trading re: the Iran war (Hungary is a known hotbed of Russian assets / spies). 2) Trying to prop up the Hungarian leader so as to hinder the EU in a similar strategy to Russia, using Orban as a spoiler for EU policies / unity. I can’t see any other reason the political outcome of an election in a small country far away from the U.S. would take precedence over this war. It has to be something very crucial.
Anne Applebaum@anneapplebaum

JD Vance is heading to Hungary to endorse Viktor Orban. Here is a description of the corrupt regime, and the bizarre, post-reality campaign, that the US administration now supports: theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/03/…

@EngFocus I cannot see the downside, private sector risk, taxes, jobs and economic activity. Even if a bit reaches UK homes has to be better then transporting from halfway across the world?

The assertion that 'all N Sea gas is pumped directly to UK homes' is easily disproved by a cursery Google. It's so much more complicated than Neil is making out. But he's doubling down on the moronic #drillbabydrill rhetoric. He seems to be getting very agitated.

Andrew Neil@afneil

Your mind is clearly blown because you have no idea what you’re talking about. Let’s just take gas. All of it comes by pipeline into the UK and is used in the UK. Oil is a bit more complicated but I’ll let you grapple with the facts about gas before moving on to that. Let me know if you have any questions about gas. Happy to help.

Reports on Telegram on the results of Ukrainian strikes on the ports of Primorsk and Ust-Luga. Briefly, here's what's going on: ▫️ Oil bases No. 1 and No. 2 of the "Transneft Port Primorsk" company, the "Slavneft-YANOS" base, the "Novatek Ust-Luga" base, and other enterprises were put out of action; ▫️ Two oil reservoirs of 50,000 m³ each at the "Transneft Port Primorsk" were burned down; ▫️ The Primorsk Sea Port was shut down, with fires breaking out at docks 1, 2, 8, and 9, as well as on tankers near docks 2 and 4; ▫️ One Russian "Pantsir S1" was hit. ⚠️ Important. The reports refute Russian claims that Ukrainian drones used Estonian airspace to strike the ports. ➡️ Judging by the documents, the Russians were tracking the drones' movements exclusively through Russian territory. This is worth noting, as Russia is trying to intimidate our partners while taking advantage of the current situation. UNIAN Media.

@Nyplodder @MartinSch0815 @ForeignAffairs @KofmanMichael Kiev has been doing this to Donbass breakaway regions since 2015, you weren't around to notice? Do you want pictures of dead children of Donetsk killed by Ukrainian bombs? Suppressing water supply to breakaway regions was all dandy & fine by you? Selective memory.

@KateFantom 100% agree with you if you have the means, a household with EV, Solar and Heat Pump is a no brainer. The issue for the country is what you said, for 4 months the grid is the back up. We need a solution to this that gives us competitive energy costs. Tribes won't solve this

I know I keep going on about this, but solar and battery storage is ace. If you’re in a position to have it, it’s a no brainer. Our old, outdated and modest system has produced over 45,000kWh since installation and our battery allows us to power shift to 98.7% cheap rate energy, which is now 5p/kWh thanks to @OctopusEnergy Plug-in solar will 100% help also. Germany have over 1.2 million units registered with phenomenal success. The same will happen here. This will save you money.

@Tw_timerAlder Just because you say it over and over doesn't mean it is the right answer now for the UK, what is the solution when the wind doesn't blow and the sun isn't shining to maximise our productivity and global competitiveness and not burden the UK population with additional cost?

Western Europe is in terminal decline with no way back. Immigration is a big part of it, but there are other reasons too, like living off America’s teat for 80 years while sinking into cradle-to-grave welfare stateism, hardly anyone alive having experienced real struggle, and elites building an Orwellian behemoth that strangles everything, also known as the European Union. There is no way back for these societies, because the demographics are baked in. That’s also why Eastern Europe, which doesn’t face the same scale of this problem, still has a chance. Geography will always constrain them, but if they play it smart and forge a genuine alliance with the United States, they can thrive.
Ari Fleischer@AriFleischer

When this is over, the western part of NATO will never be the same. Spain, England, France and Italy have sold us out, as they too often have a history of doing. Eastern European nations are the heart of NATO. They spend money on defense, know how to fight and love the US. France particularly deserves fault and blame. From supporting China and Russia at the UN to denying Americans overflight rights, they’re doing what they’ve always done - showing weakness, while cutting deals with terrorists. (The reason the US has a Marine Corps and Navy is unlike France, we refused to pay a ransom to the Barbary Pirates. France is always happy to cut a deal.) Wars have unintended consequences as nations show their true colors. NATO will never be the same, and Western European weakness and acquiescence is the cause.
