This is a big reason why this right-wing return-to-the-land fantasy of buying some crack shack in Turdtown, Iowa is complete idiocy. Rural America is dying. It's been dying for decades. I've already talked about the wipeout of manufacturing. We're seeing a wipeout of small farmers. Nobody wants to be a farmer because farming is a terrible profession. It's an industry where your entire livelihood can be wiped out by inclement weather. The entire reason we have massive federal farming subsidies is because historically, farmers went through extreme boom/bust cycles that would ruin countless numbers of them to the point where they committed suicide. This was both inhumane and a threat to the nation's food supply. Complain about factory farming all you want, but nobody wants to pick up a scythe and cut the wheat themselves, and absent any kind of incentive, why would they? When I hitchhiked across the country in 2012, I got picked up by a nice old woman in Iowa who told me that all the local farmers were selling out to Monsanto because their kids saw how terrible farming was, grew up, and moved to Des Moines, Minneapolis, or Chicago to take regular white-collar jobs. Half of my family are from rural upstate New York and none of them are farmers. Ghost towns are taking over rural states like Nebraska as the last residents either die or move to the big city. North Dakota, the only state in the U.S. that bans corporate farming, recently had to relax this law because nobody wants to slop the hogs for a living. Farming is probably the one industry where a massive federal system of subsidies, protections, and incentives is justified. The alternative is to either let Bayer buy up all the farmland and start slipping maggots into our meat or becoming dependent on foreign food imports. There ARE a good number of programs in place to help people get into farming. I follow a YouTuber/Substacker who quit freelance writing and bought farmland in upstate New York (near Saratoga Springs I believe) using a federal farm credit program. She's currently leading a campaign against corporate solar farms that are running roughshod over rural upstate. We need more support for small farmers. I wouldn't mind farming if a) I had some guarantee that I wouldn't lose everything because of a freak flood and b) it could be sufficiently automated to reduce labor costs. This is why we need to lean heavily into AI and robotics as we deport all the foreigners. Imagine sipping a beer on your hand-built porch while your robots plant the corn and then harvest it for you. We're not there yet. But we must get there.
