@UtahFlatRanger Many can live off $18/hr, but it is with a low standard of living. Roommates, no children, cheap everything, etc. Possible for early adults. As soon as you have a wife, child, or dependent parent, then it becomes exceedingly hard at $18/hr in most places We must end all H-1Bs

You can't really live off of $18 a hour. At $24 a hour, you sorta kinda can if you work atleast 10 hours of overtime. If you want to save a reasonable amount of money you need to work 60-75 hours a week which is asinine. Deport, Stop importing foreign labor, Abolish the H1B program.
Ibis Florida Man@Another_FL_Man

@Alpaca_Capital @upstatefederlst $18/hour for a steel welder at a shipyard. Might as well work at Starbucks.

@kathrwn It does seem low. I do not know how they came up with that figure. Then again, the estimated launch cost of Starship is $0.09 billion ($90 million), so maybe.

@kathrwn I'm in graduate courses on the future of the space economy right now. My personal take: the decline in launch costs is the tech leap that changes everything and we are not even close to knowing how massive that impact will turn out to be. We can't even imagine it

@kathrwn Remotely possible? Absolutely. Likely? ...That is a matter of political will. Seven years includes the next presidential administration's full first term. Technologically, it depends upon the success of Starship, SpaceX, and more broadly on the vastly growing space economy.

Big companies like Lowe's don't want you to know these jobs exist They want them hidden in tiny classified print once a week That's why we built the Jobs Now system to make sure you have access to hidden PERM jobs, fully digitized every week, so you can apply with ease!

It's All Coming Together@All2getherNow

Plenty of standard software engineering positions at Lowe's in Charlotte NC in the print newspaper today. You won't find these positions on the Lowe's company website, because these are all PERM market tests only advertised in the print newspaper and on the NC SWA site. Apply today, qualified Americans!

@elonmusk That may be easier to build than a lunar space elevator, but the risk of catastrophe seems quite high. A gentle drop from the elevator into a ballistic transfer would be more controlled, more energy efficient, and safer. Grok-made image is decent at describing it

I committed suicide in 2015. I drank a 5th of whiskey, a bottle of wine while downing 30 serequel pills and 20 clonopin pills. While I was waiting to pass out and never wake up, a voice told me "Michael. call 911" I was almost incoherent in my thoughts. The voice was insistent now "Michael, call 911". I never talked to myself in the 3rd person. It was weird. I looked at my hand. The phone was there. I was never a phone person. I don't know where it came from. I dialed 911. I explained to the person I had done the pills and drink. She asked if I could make it to the door. I said I could. I walked to the door and went outside. There was a police car driving up at that same moment. It was as if it was meant to happen. He asked for my ID. I gave it to him. Then I was gone. I remember a little about being transferred to an ambulance. I woke in a hospital bed 2 days later. I was happy. I could not understand it. I was happy. I felt good. I was telling jokes and having a good talk with the hospital staff as they were getting me ready to be transferred to a mental hospital. I finally understood how the Lord saved me. I have never been the same, since. I can't explain it. I was saved and saved. I am not worthy but I was spared hell. I got healthy. I went from 250lbs to 170. I read my bible. My non military PTSD was a thing I could deal with without pharma. I now take no meds. So, here I am, alone, no need for social appeasement. Only to gather the lay of the land and make dumb posts, sometimes. May you all be blessed as I have been. Thank you, Lord.

A U.S. Marine Corps release on March 23, 2026 detailed how Lance Cpl. Eirick Schule developed a 3D-printed replacement for the MUOS antenna mast in April 2025, cutting costs from $5,644 per unit to about $10 and reducing delivery time from over 7 months to 10 hours, with 107 units produced and an estimated $600,000 saved.

Admittedly this comparison is a little unfair because US shipbuilding is geared towards the USN and the military has much higher and more bespoke standards than civilian shipping. Still, Japan and SK can build equivalent ships to small USN vessels enormously quicker/cheaper.

This is a great account for helping to keep track of what is going on in Iran
J.T. Alexander@JTAlexander_

Major notes from the weekend on Iran: 1) Combined Force strikes started hitting IRGC Ground Forces units in the Kurdish regions. 2) We have confirmed that IRGC members are at least two cycles behind on pay. 3) *Coincidentally,* I'm sure, the IRGC Ground Forces Commander went on a tour visiting these forces. In combination, these three notes indicate a high risk of desertion throughout the IRGC. 4) Separately, we have the attack on Diego Garcia that, frankly, justifies the war in and of itself. The base itself isn't terribly significant, its not that "Iran can get Diego Garcia! We have to go to war!" The issue is that Iran constantly lies about everything to do with its nuclear program. Taqiyya. They've issued fatwas against nuclear weapons, then simultaneously enrich uranium to levels only usable in weapons while developing long-range ballistic missiles. "Its for medical purposes!" No, it wasn't, and it couldn't be. Uranium enriched to this degree has no medical uses. "Its for self-defense!" Then why were you hiding a long range ballistic missile capable of delivering a nuclear weapon to London? The fact they were developing these weapons while consistently lying about it, in the face of all the world being united against their acquisition of the weapons, combined with all of their past acts of terrorism and piracy, absolutely justifies this war. 5) On Negotiations: These are being played very close to the chest, but here's what I've been able to gather... Witkoff and Kushner are keeping lines of communication open with non-IRGC elements of the Iranian State—if I had to guess, I'd expect officials within the Republican Government. If not Pezeshkian himself, then probably people with access to him. It seems abundantly clear that the situation in Iran is at this point A Tale of Two Cities. One is an IRGC-Cleric alliance propping up the corpse of the Velayat-e Faqih. The other is the Republican-Reform alliance propping up the still in-tact organs of state outside of the IRGC's control. We are almost certainly negotiating with one of these 'cities,' and not the other. This is what I expected would be the prelude to final resolution. The existing power structures in Iran will continue to pull support away from, and rallying support against, the IRGC. At this point, it appears the plan is to reach a pre-negotiated settlement with the Republican-Reform Government while hammering the IRGC on all available fronts and enabling a fairly smooth transition of power. Mass uprising is probably now the backup plan, with total dismantling of Iran's infrastructure the backup to the backup plan.

@PaulFisch1 @SuitablePolitic @sethjlevy Their smart ones were smarter than you, and the confident ones were vastly more confident than you. You have no chance to analyze their decision-making process, especially if you don't localize rational actor theory to their rationales. What was that 19-Feb earthquake?

That was a path that wasn't available to them. Even if they did have that level of secrecy which they obviously don't and anyone making decisions should know that. As soon as they did any underground testing everyone would know because of Seismic monitoring and Radionuclide Detection. Then Israel would unleash on them and they would be in the current situation or worse. So that is not an option, or a logical path to pursue, which I'm certain they considered over the last 8+ years. If you assume they are rational actors, all their behaviors make a lot of sense. Even the highly telegraphed tit for tats under Biden where they very clearly did not want to start some kind of bloodthirsty jihad. I'm not pro religious fanatics or whatever, but their actions are not the actions of a country that wanted to strap a suicide bomb to itself and blow up the world.

Trump is going to hit the power plants because he wants to turn the lights out for a variety of reasons, many of which pertaining to the seizure of Kharg Island. As @sethjlevy said, it'd certainly be on my list. But by giving this ultimatum, Trump forces the regime to respond with pride wnd put themselves in a no-win situation. When Iran goes to retaliate, their missiles and drones won't land. We will intercept everything. Because we're waiting for it. And they'll reveal the location of, probably, their final launchers. Or they fail to live up to their word and the regime collapses under the weight of how weak they've shown the world they are.

@Digdug30 @Jon_173d @thomasbsauer You are completely wrong on the pendulum. While still bureaucratic, the modern VA screens for everything and asks all the questions. "Have you ever had a nosebleed in 20 years of service" However, it's possible that your experience and mine are coming from two different regions.

@thomasbsauer It can be that in his case, but things are vastly different now. Mental Health is the big claim. That's what his is. That's the big one on most everyone's disability at the modern VA. MH is screened for much more than before. MH treatment is not stigmatized as much as before
