The Trump Administration is considering using the Defense Production Act as part of a strategy to save the beleaguered Spirit Airlines, who has declared bankruptcy for the second time in two years as the Iran War drives up jet fuel costs for all domestic and international airlines, according to U.S. officials familiar with the discussions who spoke to CBS News. Under the bailout plan being discussed, the government would lend Spirit $500 million at a reasonable rate interest, and become the top debtor in the bankruptcy pecking order. The loan would be protected by Spirit assets that would exceed the government's costs, while providing taxpayers with a warrant - the right to own 90% of the company after it emerges from bankruptcy, then likely being sold to another carrier, potentially American or Delta.

This is true. Delta & United made almost all of the profit for the U.S. airline industry last year & look set to continue. The market has shifted & they were ready. The demise of JetBlue & Spirit will raise fares. It’s not great, but I’m not sure anything can be done.
Anish Moonka@anishmoonka

JetBlue hasn't made a profit in six years. Spirit is on its second bankruptcy in under 12 months. Delta made $5 billion last year. They fly the same kinds of planes to the same airports, but two of them are dying and one is having the best run of its 100-year history. In the last three months of 2025, Delta made more money from its premium seats than from its economy seats, for the first time ever. CEO Ed Bastian told investors that more than 95% of Delta's revenue now comes from households that earn more than $100,000 a year. Almost every new seat Delta adds in 2026 will be business class or first class, barely any economy at all. The airline market has split in two. Business travelers and wealthy vacationers will happily pay $1,200 for a seat that folds into a flat bed. Everyone else picks whichever ticket is $9 cheaper on Google Flights. The middle of the market has vanished, and JetBlue has been sitting right in the middle for years. About 60% of JetBlue's flying happens in New York and Florida, where it has to fight the big legacy airlines on one side and the dirt-cheap budget airlines on the other. JetBlue tried to be the nice middle option. Free wifi and decent legroom, plus seatback TVs that other airlines skip. It never built the luxury cabin revenue that Delta and United rely on. Its rewards program doesn't print money like Delta's American Express deal does. JetBlue owes about $9 billion and pays $600 million a year just in interest. It has lost money in most of the last six years. Spirit tried the exact opposite and still lost. A pure budget airline with yellow planes and tickets starting at $49. Then travelers changed their minds. They decided paying a bit more for a seat assignment and a checked bag was worth it. Spirit bolted on bigger seats and bundled fares. That only raised its costs without making Spirit feel fancy. Two bankruptcies later, the company had just $337 million in the bank at the end of last year. The Middle East fuel spike is speeding up a collapse that was already under way. Jet fuel went from an average of $2.49 a gallon in 2025 to $4.88 on April 2 of this year. That is a 95% jump in about five weeks, after Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz shipping route at the end of February. JP Morgan estimates Spirit will lose 20 cents on every dollar if fuel stays at current levels. JetBlue will lose about $1.3 billion this year. Neither airline brings in enough rich-traveler money to cover that hole. If both shrink or disappear, the winners are already picked. Delta, United, and American will walk away with the empty gates and the open takeoff times. Your cheap flight out of Fort Lauderdale just becomes a more expensive flight out of Fort Lauderdale.

Now we’re kind of wishing it into reality. I don’t know where Spirit would be if the merger with JetBlue had been allowed, but I assume better off. Blocking it was a mistake that led here. Nobody is going to buy them. They’ll wait to cannibalize the jets & gates.

Spirit Airlines could go out of business overnight – essentially stranding flyers who have tickets already. Here's what we know.

@CWLemoine It’s just not worth making this big of an issue over. Deal with it appropriately in your cockpit if it happens. Never have had anyone do it in mine. It happens too frequently but just move on.

The amount of people defending the meowing is incredible. "Comedic relief." "I bet you're fun at parties." "Relax." If you're entertained by this nonsense as a professional pilot, you don't have the IQ or maturity to be flying passengers. And yes, it has been going on for many years. Doesn't make it acceptable.
Special Ops Magazine@specialopsmag

@rawsalerts As someone who has close ties with air traffic control, I can tell you this isn't abnormal, and isn't really a big deal. Pilots and controllers have incredibly stressful jobs, and sometimes some comedic relief is helpful. Relax.

@krisvancleave @CBSNews It’s entirely unprofessional and not supposed to happen. It still happens daily. It’s generally ignored and it stops. Way too many other things to investigate and fix in the national airspace. This is not a safety of flight issue.

We’ve reached out to several airlines. They all tell us they are looking into it but it’s not clear who is doing the meowing/barking so it may hard to determine who did what when. Full FAA Statement to @CBSNews ⬇️

@Alexwest_Q @rawsalerts Yeah sure. Won’t happen. They’ll never figure out who it was. Just move on from this nothing burger. It is unprofessional but happens daily. They’ll be investing a lot if so. And they won’t find out who is transmitting it.

Two pilots appeared to make meowing noises and dog barks as they communicated with each other before air traffic control at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport called them out on Sunday. "You guys, you need to be professional," an air traffic controller is heard saying.

@Mrgunsngear Fun fact: Pilots need a FCC Radiotelephone Operators Permit to fly in the US. Someday, the FCC is going to crack down and take those permits away from these idiots. What a stupid way to throw away a multi-million dollar career.

Reportedly Delta and American Airlines pilots flying out of Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport were making dog & cat noises at each other for no apparent reason before the air traffic controller (ATC) had to tell them to stop. The ATC then hits them with the jab "this is why you're still flying RJ" 😮😂 On a serious note - this airport probably isn't the best place to be joking around flying in a Regional Jet (RJ) based on recent history. Fly accordingly.... ✈️ #CityLife #savage #flying #Delta #american #ReganNational #DC #WashingtonDC #cat #dog #WTF #fail #urban #pilot

@Mrgunsngear No way they know who is making these transmissions. It’s on guard frequency (121.5). Shouldn’t be happening but it does daily. Just ignored and it stops. Does make me laugh though sometimes. No one was endangered by this but again, not appropriate.

This happens everyday on Guard frequency! All pilots are suppose to monitor 121.5 (Guard Frequency) on every flight. 121.5 provides a common frequency that can utilized in the event of an emergency. Some pilots think it’s funny to “meow” on 121.5 in an effort to draw out other pilots who tell them to stop ( Guard dogs). I personally refuse to participate in either side of this silliness, however I did laugh at the RJ comment. 🤣🤷‍♂️ . . Recorded from @theatcapp

@CWLemoine This was likely on guard (121.5). Not that it makes it right. This is a pretty much daily occurrence. Better to ignore it. Not very likely you’ll find out who is doing it to enforce any certificate action.
