"There are people reporting 3-month pilots as ARR, and they're free pilots." "I was talking to an investor yesterday who sees that all the time from early-stage companies. Coming out of accelerators, saying they have a million ARR, and they look under the hood and it's just all pilots that haven't converted yet." Spellbook's @scottastevenson describes all the ways he's seeing enterprise startups gaming the ARR metric to make their companies look better than they actually are: "CARR is contracted ARR. So it allows you to count revenue that's not live yet...It's a very easy metric to game." "You have these really complex implementations where you might be promising a customer, 'We'll build this feature, and once we build it, then we'll start billing you.' What happens if you don't build that feature?" "So one of the issues you see is, companies stacking all these commitments where they'll switch on billing once they deliver X with their forward-deployed engineers. But what happens if they miss that, or if that gets delayed? And they're reporting it upfront as ARR. But they're not actually at the point where the ARR is live." "The other one is the step-up contract where Year 1 is 25% of the cost, Year 2 is a little higher, Year 3 is higher. People are either amortizing that back over the period to get a higher average or even taking the Year 3 amount."
Scott Stevenson@scottastevenson

It’s time to expose a huge scam in AI startups: Contracted ARR The reason many AI startups are crushing revenue records is because they are using a dishonest metric The biggest funds in the world are supporting this and misleading journalists for PR coverage. The setup: Company signs 3-year enterprise deals. Year 1 is discounted (say $1M), Year 2 steps up ($2M), Year 3 is full price ($3M). They report $3M as “ARR” — even though they’re only collecting $1M right now. The worst part: The customer has an opt-out option at 12 months! It’s not actually a 3 year contract. In the chart below, by Q5 the company is trumpeting ~$100M “ARR” to press, while actual cash-generating, in-effect ARR is ~$35M. That’s ~3x inflation. On top of this, enterprise AI companies are bundling full-time “forward deployed engineers” into deals massively reducing margins, sometimes producing Year 1 negative margins. At some point customers are going to start triggering their opt-out clauses or aggressively negotiating down Year 3 pricing. And a wave of enterprise AI companies may collapse.

In 2021, @zoyagarg_ had a Stanford CS degree and Silicon Valley at her feet. She walked away from all of it and built a bootstrapped family comedy empire to multi-7 figures instead. No VC. No safety net. Just vision. 🧵

As I said before, with all the damning after damning details emerging I cannot see how the founders can ever raise money again from SV VCs Good question what happens with the $32M Series A as well, given Delve, as a business, is dead now (in compliance, reputation is everything)
Gergely Orosz@GergelyOrosz

I just don’t see how the Delve founders can stick around in the tech industry. This isn’t some one-off mistake: it’s systemic defrauding of their own paying customers, and now (as per this evidence) even law-breaking IP theft from a startup in the same YC batch! Indefensible

Delve got kicked out of YC: likely after more details emerged that they likely stole the IP of a fellow Y Combinator company (SimStudio) and ripped off another (Oneleet) I still think Y Combinator should say something in public on why they kicked them out. Silence == speculation

Startups are getting more creative to cut through all the noise. The most important thing a founder must know is what your ICP is and how to serve them, and @MonacoGTM nailed it with this event. I heard CEOs at my table say this was the best startup launch ever. Makes sense that a GTM company is good at GTM - if you’re sick of your CRM or thinking about getting one check out Monaco.com

@RyanFloyd I might be the only person not subscribed to those notifications. I woke up to literal shaking and the glass door downstairs rattling amplified the scaries. Easily the scariest earthquake I’ve experienced in all my years here.

it's almost always these 3 things that consistently trip young brands up that are scaling quickly at retail: 1. EDI compliance: How POs are transmitted and received. Once you are working with retailers or distributors with 20+ Distribution centers each, it's not PO PDFs over email anymore. get your EDI game plan dialed BEFORE you land a big distributor or retailer, you don't have to press go, just be able to press go on EDI quickly when the time comes. 2. COIs: Coverage requirements. Expect at least ~$2M GL, ~$5M umbrella, and ~$1M workers comp as you start working with larger distributors and retailers. 3. Facility audits Your co-packer (or your own facility) needs to meet retailer and distributor standards like SQF or BRCGS. you need to be able to provide current audits on demand. These audits take time and $ (if your co-packed, they cover the audit costs). this is not an overnight fix if you cant come up with the audits. there is 0% leniency on any of the above. get crackin!

2004 was a good year, but your Gmail address doesn't need to be stuck in it. To say goodbye to v0t3f0rp3dr02004@gmail.com or mrbrightside416@gmail.com (or whatever you were into at the time), go to your Google Account settings and choose any name available. You'll keep your old username and you can sign in with both.
