@andrewjlockley @_alice_evans Deterrence is useful now. Killing is of dubious use at best and will most likely dissuade victims from reporting - most sex crimes are committed by someone close to the victim, who may want their accuser jailed but probably not dead

@_alice_evans Is deterrence important? Or is the solution just hanging sex criminals for 20 generations, until selection pressure eliminates the relevant genotype?

"Mr Carman told police he had agreed to pay the teenager 1,000 baht (£23) for sexual services, but that they had an argument when they returned to his apartment and he offered only 500 baht" "The body of 17-year-old Tunchanok Donhomla was [later] discovered near a railway track in Pattaya". This tragic case speaks to a central theme of my forthcoming book: male violence, and the importance of creating powerful deterrents so that young women can walk home safely.

@Glinner @PhasmophobicBoi Have you noticed that Rowling is still successful? It’s because sometimes she thinks about something unrelated to trans people. Have you tried reserving a few minutes a day for that?

It is very clear that his wife tried to give him an off-ramp that he was simply too delusional to take. He’s probably gotten a pretty sweet Netflix deal by now in the timeline where he took it.

I should have been writing comedy for the last decade but my UK/Irish friends and colleagues watched and even helped trans activists destroy my career and marriage. One by one, they all joined in, until even Arthur Mathews, Neil Hannon and Ardal O'Hanlon fell into line.

There are some center-to-right wing accounts I follow that are more offended by the possibility that some public health sources are over-estimating the death count from Musk carelessly destroying US global health programs than by the core fact that Musk really did carelessly destroy US global health (and bragged about it relentlessly) in a way that clearly killed people. These people know who they are, and they're wrong.
Jerusalem@JerusalemDemsas

Elon Musk bragged about feeding USAID into the "wood chipper" but now he pretends that whatever happens as a result isn't his fault. If DOGE had saved the federal government billions of dollars, you can be sure he would be taking credit for that. But somehow he's not responsible for the consequences of eliminating these programs? Today at @TheArgumentMag we published a thorough explanation for why we should hold @elonmusk responsible for the deaths of *at best* 700,000 people. theargumentmag.com/p/elon-musks-z…

DISGUSTING headline by @NPR. This individual didn’t just post “about ICE” — she committed a FEDERAL CRIME by posting the address of an ICE law enforcement officer online. Doxxing federal law enforcement officers is a federal crime that puts their lives and their families in serious danger. This danger is NOT hypothetical. Our law enforcement officers are on the frontlines arresting terrorists, gang members, murderers, pedophiles, and rapists. Right now, they are facing a more than 1,300% increase in assaults against them and an 8,000% increase in death threats. If you doxx our officers, you will face the consequences.

The problem with the debate about CPS is that people accept logic they never would in any other circumstance. If I told them that we were going to racially profile young black men in high crime neighborhoods and that I could show that this would statistically reduce crime, they would balk. If I told them that we were going to start searching young men’s apartments at random and that I could show them that this would statistically reduce crime, they would say no way. If I could demonstrate to them that stop and frisk would reduce crime, they would reject it. And so on and so on. In every case they would understand clearly that even though trading away these rights would reduce crime, it’s still not worth it. But then with respect to CPS they forget everything they know and suddenly this is a really difficult question and maybe we should let the state kidnap kids just a little bit, as a treat, if it prevents some crime. It literally doesn’t matter whether it reduces crime. I do not submit to you kidnapping my children on the ground that this will in some cases, if practiced more generally, reduce crime. I don’t care that it will reduce crime, for the same reason that you probably don’t care that any of the other things above would reduce crime.
Jane Coaston 🏔️@janecoaston

I totally understand -- the problem is that nationally, 96% of anonymous reports of child abuse are unsubstantiated. this is a massive burden on CPS -- which is already overwhelmed by actual cases of child abuse and neglect. nysenate.gov/legislation/bi…

The government seized this family's $195,000 house over a $1,600 tax that a judge ruled they *didn't even owe.* The county sold it for $76,000. The Supreme Court ruled the family isn't entitled to fair market value—which was almost $120,000 more. A nightmare.

Hypothetical: suppose Hawaii is outraged at SCOTUS' gun decision (not saying they will be; assume it). So they have a massive campaign for property owners of all sorts including gas stations & stores to post "no guns" signs, along with aggressive enforcement. Constitutional?

@dilanesper No because it’s government encouraging speech which is the same as coercion. Now property owners are certainly free to make their own decision. The state has no seat at that table to even discuss it.
