A quick video tutorial on how to assemble our SO101 & ElRobot compatible 3D printed parallel jaw gripper.

@soft_servo I see some task specific fine tunes on HF, but wanted something that generalizes

The best robotics model cant control the most accessible robot arm. I’m finetuning π0.5 on 5m frames of so101 to produce an open source generalist model that anyone can run at home.
I have filtered the HuggingFace community VLA dataset down to 5.4m frames of so100 data with 215 unique tasks. I’ve frozen the VLA weights to finetune only the action expert to teach π0.5 the so100 embodiment without any loss of generality.
This approach is an unproven experiment as I can find no similar attempt to teach π0.5 a new embodiment while preserving generality. Training is underway, I’ll be posting updates as we make progress

@soft_servo same feetech sts3215s! identical kinematics so it should be a direct upgrade to so101

I'm building a <$5k wheeled humanoid.
progress this week:
- designed 3 wheel holonomic drive and ordered sheet metal parts within 48 hours
- same day redesign and order for sheet metal, belt driven so101
- set prelim actuation points for tendon driven arm that uses Dyneema DM20 (hopefully zero creep), almost 4 DOF actuation at or proximal to shoulder adduction
- calculated almost 8x payload at rated actuator torque (omitted added transmission weight though)

@chetan_ @chris_j_paxton yeah interesting. what was missing from off the shelf like YAM / agile / ARX?
English

@soft_servo @chris_j_paxton Surprisingly not even a matter of price. Just couldn’t find something that met the combination of specs we wanted on the market that could be reasonably sourced in the ~hudreds scale
English

@chetan_ @chris_j_paxton curious why you guys went in house vs off the shelf?
English

@soft_servo @chris_j_paxton the torso is from fairino, the manipulation arms are in house
English

@ed0henderson buy a video light panel for consistent lighting and a tripod with an arm for aerial camera position (neewer is a good brand)
don’t let any cameras have inconsistent backgrounds / lighting (e.g. your side camera has you and your teleop setting)
English

My current workspace setup for robotic arm demonstrations:
- 2-MP 30 fps 100˚ wrist cam
- GoPro Hero Black 10 on wide web cam mode
- Iphone 17e
Let the training begin.
Note: Claude Code discovered and turned on my iPhone camera itself.

🚨 BREAKING: Amazon has officially acquired New York-based Fauna Robotics, the startup behind the soft-bodied Sprout humanoid.
While Amazon has aggressively pursued automation in its fulfillment centers, this acquisition signals a massive escalation in the race for the consumer home market. Sprout is a bipedal robot designed specifically for the "messy reality" of shared human spaces.
English

so much for open source robotics i guess 😭 (but congrats to the team)

@JulianFried siiick i am going to be in the area 2 weeks from now thurs-sat, could i swing by?

project hail mary was unfortunately a middling adaptation of a good book. the script has the unfortunate affect of “language model populism” - where every single line has to be some sort of punched up comedic zinger yet still unremarkable.
visuals were uninspired and trite and more or less identical to other space movies. everything good about the film comes from the wonderful world scaffolding of the book and the hard science fiction of it all that lets you suspend disbelief on the alien rocky
the movie doesn’t really try to get into the xenolinguistic stuff even at the depth the book tries (someone called it “arrival for idiots” which unfortunately hit )
the thing that elevated the book is the commitment to a hard science fiction engineeringporn fiction at a level nobody else is able to write. the direction of the movie doesn’t really convey the same feeling successfully, and you’re left with flat characters, an alien that is more human than several humans i know, and a marvel populism
gosling and the german woman are great as actors, but this movie will not be remembered in a year. it is disappointing to see people do so little with a quarter billion, insane acting talent, and incredible source IP

@TheHumanoidHub @GoingBallistic5 @GoingBallistic5 why don’t many standalone arms use parallel actuation in the wrist or even elbow joints?
English

A breakdown of the Unitree H2.
I would have loved to call it a joint effort, but it's just Scott Walter linkaging together some interesting details.
