That McCarrick monster lurked in the shadows of the Church for decades, preying on the innocent while the powerful turned blind eyes, shielding him with silence, promotions, and influence that stretched from seminaries to the highest corridors of Rome. But enter Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò a lionhearted truth-teller, a true shepherd who refused to play the game of complicity or cowardice. As Apostolic Nuncio (Vatican’s ambassador) to the United States from October 2011 to April 2016, he navigated the treacherous protocols of Vatican diplomacy, where ambassadors are bound by silence in public and must channel every alarm through the proper, private paths, lest they fracture unity or invite scandal without mandate, or perhaps a provocation in wait to trap Vigano. In his own unflinching words from the historic 2018 testimony, Viganò recounted learning of Pope Benedict XVI’s informal but clear restrictions on McCarrick: to withdraw to a life of prayer and penance, abstaining from public ministry, lectures, travel, and celebrations. Upon his arrival in Washington, trusted aides briefed him on these measures, including a “stormy conversation” between his predecessor Archbishop Sambi and McCarrick himself. Viganò did not hesitate. He confronted McCarrick directly in a private meeting at the nunciature, repeating the restrictions face-to-face. McCarrick muttered vague admissions of past failings but dismissed them as trivial; Viganò held firm, privately reinforcing the boundaries and reporting the matter upward through the chain of command. He went further still. In private audiences with Pope Francis including the decisive June 23, 2013 encounter, Viganò spoke with raw candor when the Holy Father inquired about McCarrick: “Holy Father, I don’t know if you know Cardinal McCarrick, but if you ask the Congregation for Bishops there is a dossier this thick about him. He corrupted generations of seminarians and priests and Pope Benedict ordered him to withdraw to a life of prayer and penance.” Those alarms, delivered in the strictest confidence as protocol demanded, went unheeded; the rot continued unchecked. Retired in April 2016 at age 75, Viganò found himself kept at arm’s length from Rome, no offer of a Curial post, no invitation to resume service in the Eternal City, despite his requests. For nearly two and a half years he remained sidelined, far from the daily machinery of power, time enough to reflect deeply, review his files from six years as nuncio, and steel himself for what must come. Then, in August 2018 when the Pennsylvania grand jury report and McCarrick’s cardinalate resignation cracked the façade he roared. In a blistering, meticulously documented 11-page public testimony, he named names, laid bare the systemic cover-up, and demanded justice, knowing full well the cost: isolation, vilification, and eventual excommunication in 2024. A martyr’s badge for fidelity to Christ over comfort or career. Viganò stands as the consummate whistleblower: he honored diplomatic restraint and Church protocol by trying every internal channel first with private warnings to McCarrick, reports to superiors, direct words to the Pope himself before going public only when those channels proved deaf. Better damned for righteousness than complicit in silence.
