I think about this scene often in the movie Gattaca, where Ethan Hawke’s character outswims his brother. The film is set in the future, where people are genetically engineered, and Ethan Hawke is born natural with genetic flaws, yet through total commitment, he perseveres through life and achieves what is thought to be impossible. At the end, his genetically superior brother challenges him to a game of chicken, where they swim out to sea and the first one to turn back, loses. The brother (Anton) was defeated by Ethan Hawke (Vincent) when they were younger, but he never chalked it up to much. So in this final swim scene near the end of the movie, this is the dialogue between them:
Anton: “Vincent! How are you doing this, Vincent? How have you done any of this? We have to go back!”
Vincent: “It’s too late for that. We’re closer to the other side.”
Anton: “What other side? You wanna drown us both?”
Vincent: “You wanna know how I did it? This is how I did it, Anton: I never saved anything for the swim back.”
That line “I never saved anything for the swim back” is replayed often in my head. It’s a message of unrelenting determination despite all odds. If you want to be successful, you have to outwork yourself and push past your mental barriers. There is no cheat code to life. If you want something, work for it.
