I think about this scene often in the movie Gattaca, where Ethan Hawke’s character outswims his brother. The film is set in the future, where people are genetically engineered, and Ethan Hawke is born natural with genetic flaws, yet through total commitment, he perseveres through life and achieves what is thought to be impossible. At the end, his genetically superior brother challenges him to a game of chicken, where they swim out to sea and the first one to turn back, loses. The brother (Anton) was defeated by Ethan Hawke (Vincent) when they were younger, but he never chalked it up to much. So in this final swim scene near the end of the movie, this is the dialogue between them: Anton: “Vincent! How are you doing this, Vincent? How have you done any of this? We have to go back!” Vincent: “It’s too late for that. We’re closer to the other side.” Anton: “What other side? You wanna drown us both?” Vincent: “You wanna know how I did it? This is how I did it, Anton: I never saved anything for the swim back.” That line “I never saved anything for the swim back” is replayed often in my head. It’s a message of unrelenting determination despite all odds. If you want to be successful, you have to outwork yourself and push past your mental barriers. There is no cheat code to life. If you want something, work for it.

My mom passed away last night with 10 family members by her side. She was the first in our family to escape the Soviet Union. She arrived in California with nothing, hustled as a single mom of 4, and achieved the American dream in every respect. She was crafty, resourceful, and could make humor out of any situation. Here’s a photo of us when money was tight: I asked to be Aladdin for Halloween, so she dressed me up as a Russian gypsy and thought I wouldn’t notice. April 20, 1950 - June 21, 2026

Go to Texas. Become a telescope farmer. The dudes at Starfront Observatories have created a strange and beautiful business. People send them their telescopes. Starfront installs them, hooks them up to fiber and lets people control their scopes remotely. One of my favorite stories that we've found over the past year.

The World Cup has turned America into a discovery channel for the rest of the world. And they are not handling it well. In the best possible way. Here is what they are discovering: Free public restrooms. Europeans pay every time. Free water at every restaurant. Just appears. Free refills. Coffee. Sodas. Iced tea. Unlimited. Free chips and salsa before you even order. Free warm bread with dinner. Ice in drinks like civilized people. Air conditioning everywhere. Not a moral debate. A fact. Parking lots attached to the actual place you are going. Drive throughs where the food comes to the car while you sit in it. Ranch dressing by the gallon. Tex-Mex that cannot be explained only experienced. Dental care that actually works. Buccee’s. There are no words for Buccee’s. Then they found the grocery stores. Five of them within one mile. Each one the size of an aircraft hangar. Burgers. Steaks. Brisket. Ribs. Pulled pork. Lamb. Veal. Every cut of every animal ever domesticated by human civilization available in one refrigerated aisle at ten in the morning on a Tuesday. The Germans stood in the meat section for forty five minutes. In silence. Processing. They finally understand why we do not have trains. We have roads wide enough for the cars we actually drive. Parking lots the size of small European countries. Airports in every city worth visiting. Why would we need trains. The Germans are taking ranch home by the bottle. The Dutch found queso and briefly lost the ability to speak. The Japanese are photographing HEB like it is the Louvre. The Czechs are weeping in West, Texas. Welcome to America. Everything is free, enormous, air conditioned, comes with chips, and has five grocery stores within a mile that will sell you any cut of any animal you have ever imagined. Write that down. 🦋

1,021 applicants. 70 builders admitted. 45 projects. Absolutely incredible day. The winners developed a system that > calls the patient > uses @grok voice to discuss symptoms > literally measures tone + affect using new research *during convo* using the voice api > creates a longitudinal health rollup that the patient owns > integrates w other medical records > allows them to share detailed medical dashboard with any doctor they choose > helps the doctor intervene in the right way with minimal error and delay Very impressive for a one day build Phillip Huang and Yilun Zhang (no x afaik, but pictured below) well deserve first place honestly many of the projects had massive utility for patients The future of healthcare is going to be incredibly personalized and the balance of power will shift heavily to patients Thank you so much to our amazing sponsors 🫶 - @xai - @vercel - @cursor_ai - @inngest

i met the founders of @Proto_Town about two years ago and saw the vision immediately. every time i visit, it’s bigger, busier, and more impressive than the last. watching the team turn an ambitious vision into reality has been incredibly special, and it still feels like they’re just getting started. couldn’t be more excited to see what comes next. 🇺🇸🤠👏🏼 @joshuafarahzad @MerleNye

Imagine you had the energy, metabolism, and mental agility of your younger self - without the aches and pains that come from aging. That’s what we’re attempting to build at @NewLimit and it will be one of the most important achievements in human history ever if it works. We're on the cusp of this being tractable given the rise of AI to test more hypotheses in-silico, along with the rapidly falling cost of single cell sequencing, etc. We announced our Series C and upcoming human clinical trials this week, so still a long, long way to go, with many risks. But with hard work we've got a shot at making this a reality.
