This Friday will be my last day at Coinbase. Working here is the hardest and the greatest thing I’ve ever done. With the toughest and smartest people I know. Over the past 3 years we’ve been tested. Financially. Legally. Reputationally. Politically. We’ve risen to the challenge. Bravely. Formidably. Starting with the bouncing QR code, Coinbase built a modern model of brand that enhanced the company’s political power, boosted confidence, and regularly went viral, lifting the company and category’s overall awareness, appeal and engagement. We growth hacked the Super Bowl. We got D.C. to WAKE UP to the fact that America <3s Crypto. We showed how to save billions in swipe fees. We birthed a memecoin ($MGGLS for life). Most importantly, we bore witness to the economic reality of America’s youth and the urgent need to UPDATE THE SYSTEM. The Coinbase marketing and comms team is the best in the game. It’s been an honor to work alongside them. Team, thanks for showing me that instead of skipping through your ads with sound off – strangers on the Internet will routinely CHEER for you and publicly demand that you get a pay raise!! You’re truly giving voice to a movement. And to that movement (the degens, the Bitcoin maxis, the Wall Street suits and everyone in between), thanks for welcoming this n00b with open arms. The Coinbase journey proves that smart marketing can transform brand into an asymmetrical business advantage for frontier tech companies – in good times, and bad times. This journey is my inspiration as I move into my next role as OpenAI’s first CMO, which I’ll be starting on Monday. I’ve had the rare opportunity to work with many of our generation's greatest founders – from Mark, to @brian_armstrong and now, @sama . As I embark on the next step, I am eternally grateful to Brian, and in particular to @emiliemc (who made me a CMO) for this experience. It made me stronger and better in every way. Long live crypto. 💪

Today is my last day at Coinbase. Six years ago I was offered a seat on a rocket ship. And dam, am I glad I said yes. If there's one thing I learned after two crippling winters and three history making bull runs, it's: Never bet against Coinbase.

We should expunge from our vocabulary the words: we have a “messaging problem.” When over 70% percent of Americans think we are on the wrong track or headed in the wrong direction, that is not a messaging problem. That is reality problem. Inflation and immigration are not “messaging problems.” These are realities that produced discontent widespread enough to hand Donald Trump the presidency. We ignore the real-world messages that these realities send at our own peril.

Donald Trump has no greater friend than the far left, which has managed to alienate historic numbers of Latinos, Blacks, Asians, and Jews from the Democratic Party with absurdities like “Defund the Police” or “From the River to the Sea” or “Latinx.” There is more to lose than there is to gain politically from pandering to a far left that is more representative of Twitter, Twitch, and TikTok than it is of the real world. The working class is not buying the ivory-towered nonsense that the far left is selling.

What APIs would you most like to see added to @CoinbaseDev in Q4 to help you go build?

@jholguin Congrats Julian! You're a true visionary. Some of the most exciting work I've seen, and it's still just the beginning.

I feel like a large amount of GDP is locked up because it is difficult for person A to very conveniently pay 5 cents to person B. Current high fixed costs per transaction force each of them to be of high enough amounts, which results in business models with purchase bundles, subscriptions, ad-based, etc., instead of simply pay-as-you-go. As an example, I'd like my computer to auto-pay 5 cents to the article/blog that I just read but I can't, and I think we're worse for it. In a capitalist system, transactions between entities are the gradient signal of the economy. Because our pipes don't support low magnitude terms in the sums, the gradients are not flowing properly through the system. I'm not familiar enough with payments to have an idea of specific solutions, but I expect we'd see a lot of positive 2nd / 3rd order effects if the gradients were allowed to flow properly, frictionlessly and with much higher resolution.
