So for those of you curious as to what’s going on here: Indians are currently the #1 refugee claimants in Canada. More than Afghanistan, Haiti, Colombia, Cuba, Ethiopia, Palestine, and Ukraine COMBINED. This happened after international students realized they could scam the system by applying for refugee status to get cheaper tuition rates, or to extend their stay in Canada indefinitely while awaiting endless asylum hearings and appeals. It became so absurd that Canada’s *liberal* government has now passed a law to try and mass deny all of these claims.
RTN@RTNToronto

#NEW: Canada will cancel or block thousands of refugee claims under a new retroactive law that applies to people who waited too long to apply after entering the country 🇨🇦

What "taking back control of immigration" looks like: Under Bill C-3, anyone who can find a Canadian in their family tree is considered Canadian. Here's an example of a person whose last Canadian ancestor was born in 1835, nearly 200 years ago. Approval took 3 weeks.

@BeaverZer0 @brianlilley Switch your brain on please. That 25 Million is the tax contribution of 520 Canadian households. I'm sure we could find 520 families who would gladly take back their 48k tax contributions. I doubt much of the 25 million makes it to the ground, this is just one program of many.

@brianlilley Bro... It's 0.0000104167 % of our GDP. It's the equivalent of a person who makes $70,000/year buying a homeless person a happy meal. You will survive this I promise! 🤡

Imagine if we had legacy media journalists chasing down Canada’s past immigration ministers and demanding answers for permitting entrenched systemic fraud and years of abuse in Canada’s immigration system. Or if we had unanimous media criticism of past Housing Ministers for allowing the Canadian dream to become a fantasy. I am glad that Michael Ma is being hounded for his outrageous, kowtowing performance in committee yesterday. He should be ridiculed and embarrassed. I would just like to see consistency and outrage from the political and media class on issues that directly hurt and damage Canadians, particularly young Canadians.

@2aQueer @IanRunkle @sarkonakj That's not true. The Republic of Ireland's population is ~5.4 million, and there are approx 3 million citizens living abroad, about 1.5 million of those were born in Ireland.

Everyone should browse r/Canadiancitizenship to get a sense of how bad this is. People with distant Canadian ancestry are reporting that they're getting citizenship with Ancestry screenshots thanks to Bill C-3.

How many new citizens will Bill C-3 create? We don’t know. I just passed a motion to force the government to provide Parliament substantive data on new citizens through the Liberals recent legislation Bill C-3

@dami_cole @CityNewsTO Fair enough. I just have to interject when I see people taking about data or information being dangerous. I believe daylight is a disinfectant and the solution to people obfuscating data or twisting it for their narrative is to simply give access to that data, or even more data!

@immstatsca @CityNewsTO I also agree with what you wrote. I was looking at it at an angle of not painting a wrong picture to people who will see Canada as a place to get wealthy very easily.

@dami_cole @CityNewsTO When people intentionally suppress information as too dangerous for other people but decides to lump them all into one illiterate group. It's important that data like this is not suppressed for the wrong reasons.

It’s interesting to see the gov admit that the system was completely overwhelmed which prevented them from properly investigating abuse. However, no one was forcing the government to be approving and admitting that many students in the same short period of time… what happened to any planning efforts? Moreover, if we really want to get into this, the Startup Visa mismanagement truly escalated right around the same time. It was under Minister Fraser that the designated organization caps didn’t get introduced when they were initially recommended. The deputy minister at the time recommended implementing the caps in 2023 and Minister Fraser chose to forego this recommendation and instead implemented an arbitrary application prioritization network. Similarly for both the study permits and startup visa, caps only got implemented in 2024. Both were done under Minister Miller. And both came as quick, bandaid solutions to a problem that was already growing out of control. Many students already had their permits issued. The startup visa backlog was already in the tens of thousands. These are not coincidences, this is an example of continuous mismanagement that was happening in our immigration system at the time. And if we want to be building a better, more functional system moving forward, these mistakes need to be understood. Responsibility should be taken: why weren’t the stark applications numbers increases not flagged and addressed much sooner? Why was the caps recommendation not implemented for SUV in 2023? Personally, I still don’t think we’re seeing the full picture.. cbc.ca/news/politics/…

@dami_cole @CityNewsTO Thinking like that is what leads to only carefully manicured data being released, some data being hidden entirely, and eventually even crimes not prosecuted for fear of offending, stereotyping, or "being divisive".
