One map, one conflict, one well-placed incident, and entire cloud regions start choking. AI training clusters go dark. Payment rails freeze. Global comms fracture. We built a “distributed” future on 19th-century geography. That gap is closing fast. And it’s more dangerous than most realize. The software is virtual. The power is still brutally physical. What other systems pretend to be decentralized but aren’t?

The crazy part? These cables aren’t even that hard to map. Public databases show the exact landing points. A few countries control the majority of critical routes. During the Red Sea issues last year, some latency spikes were noticeable within hours. Most people just didn’t connect the dots. The AI race makes this worse, because the biggest models now require synchronized, low-latency clusters across continents.
