In February 2026, Delhi's Transport Department issued directives to impound and scrap diesel vehicles over 10 years old and petrol ones over 15 years—on sight, without prior notice, and often regardless of maintenance or actual emissions. This isn't phased reform; it's a blunt hammer that has devastated the used car economy and middle-class livelihoods. Families who've invested lakhs in well-maintained vehicles now face scrap values of just 4-6% of original price—essentially forced depreciation to near-zero. Taxi drivers, small traders, gig workers, and retirees lose their primary asset and source of income overnight, with incentives (road tax rebates, minor discounts on new cars) nowhere near enough to bridge the gap. The informal used-car market—vital for affordable mobility in a country where new vehicles remain out of reach for millions—is being systematically dismantled. This policy, rooted in Supreme Court directives and CAQM enforcement, ignores deeper realities: road dust and construction remain dominant pollutants (as recent CSIR-NEERI studies confirm), while blanket age-based bans penalize responsible owners and ignore fitness-based alternatives. Cross-party accountability is overdue—Congress-era NGT foundations met BJP/CAQM zeal in execution. The result? Billions in household wealth eroded, livelihoods disrupted, and little meaningful dent in AQI. We need smarter policy: emissions/fitness testing over arbitrary age cutoffs, scaled incentives for genuine scrappage, and focus on the real killers—dust, stubble, industry. There is a peculiar kind of Hindu mostly upper class ‘educated’ who lives in a perpetual state of shame and wants you to do the same. “Aren’t you ashamed as a Hindu that this happened?" "Hang your Hindu head in shame because that happened." "We Hindus should be ashamed that we allowed…" And so it goes, day after day. If there’s ever been a case study on what centuries of subjugation and enslavement can do to a people’s DNA, this is it. The self-hate is all-consuming. The desperate need to fit in - quietly, unobtrusively, becomes the ultimate survival instinct. Safety lies in silence, in not rocking the boat. Then comes the constant lament: “Things were so much better before. We all kept quiet and lived happily ever after." Nothing exposes historical ignorance more than this fantasy. "We celebrated Holi, Ram Navami, Durga Puja… and also enjoyed Jumma, Eid, or whatever, without any trouble!" Of course, you did. Because you lived behind high walls, shielded from the realities of the streets. Because Doordarshan told you only what it wanted you to know. Later, NDTV with its selective coverage of 2002 adjusted the default setting of a large number of pliable folk to *Guilt* to which they meekly complied. But now, real-time news reaches your phone. The truth can no longer be hidden. For decades, battles raged in streets you never walked, in parts of the city you never entered, behind Lal Darwajas you had only heard of. The ones fighting them were just statistics to you, mere numbers, expendable, so that you could live out your fantasy of communal harmony and secularism. So spare us your guilt. Spare us your shame. Face the reality of what’s been happening for decades. You can no longer escape it.
