@AvidCommentator another fascinating outcome is that this would be the first seat with a 2PP featuring neither the Coalition or Labor since at least World War 2

Since it's inception in 1949, the seat of Farrer has been held by only 4 people, all on the Coalition side of politics. On today's odds it looks like the LNP will need a miraculous come back to keep what was once a blue ribbon safe seat.

@Funky_Capybara @nikicaga Both sides accepted the Clinton Parameters in late Dec/early Jan 2001 and proceeded to the Taba talks, then Barak lost the election and Israel under Sharon pulled out of talks

@Patrickarchy @nikicaga Arafat famously walked away from the table in 2000, which led to the collapse of Barak’s cabinet. In February 2001 Barak was ousted

@2012JV17 @SandySev @alt_ccc @nikicaga Israel also accepted it with "reservations". And if Israel knew this was simply a way to deny the proposal why did they then proceed with the Taba Talks later that month and confirm they were productive?

@nikicaga I dont really like to invoke that point bc its not really relevant in light of the israeli policy post olmert but the 2001 and 2007 offers (especially the latter) gave pretty much everything the palestinian wanted in terms of land swaps

@alt_ccc @nikicaga the one that couldn’t proceed because Israel pulled out of talks once Sharon won the Feb 2001 election?

@aaron_benj87286 @nikicaga accept both Israel and Palestine still accepted the Clinton Parameters even after the Second Intifada had started. The actual death was Sharon winning the election in Feb 2001 and pulling Israel out of the Taba Talks

@nikicaga In the deal under Arafat, Pals were offered all of the West Bank, E Jer, Gaza, minus a tiny strip - Israel offered to give equal strip from Israel in exchange. So 100% of what Pals wanted. They said no and started a war. That was the formal death of the Two States Solution.

@Funky_Capybara @nikicaga the proposal Olmert made in secret, after announcing his resignation, while under investigation for corruption?

@nikicaga This is a dishonest argument when the most recent proposal’s map looked like this

@tastybits @nikicaga Olmert made this proposal in secret after already announcing his resignation, while under investigation for corruption. It wasn’t a real offer since he no authority to implement it.

@k_mahlburg variolous material (which Tench acknowledges the First Fleet carried) can survive that longer and might not have needed to if it was brought onboard in Cape Town or Rio. The eight month claim isn’t a knock out blow

The timeline fits. Skilled Indonesian navigators could reach northern Australia from South Sulawesi in 10–15 days — within smallpox's incubation period. The First Fleet took eight months to cover the same distance. The virus cannot survive eight months.

Tony Armstrong told ABC viewers the First Fleet committed genocide by intentionally introducing smallpox to Aboriginal people. The foremost historian on the subject disagrees. So does the virus itself. A thread on what happens when ideology replaces evidence 🧵

@k_mahlburg isn’t the claim that it arrived in sealed, glass jars of variolous material (as Watkin Tench acknowledges the First Fleet carried)? That would have considerably longer shelf life especially if it was brought onboard in South Africa

The science alone dismantles it. Smallpox cannot survive three weeks at 35°C and 65% humidity. The First Fleet took eight months to reach Sydney Cove. Summer temperatures before the 1789 outbreak regularly exceeded 40°C. The virus would have been dead long before landfall.

@AronKovcs91 @okitsmert Why is it none of the European countries that Ottomans ''colonized'' are not speaking turkish? Colonization is what France, England, Spain, Portugal, Germany did to Africa, you won't know the difference because your history books are a joke.

This community note is a fail. Colonizing is when a guy from way across the ocean comes to your house, steals your food, makes you work for them, and then sends all your stuff back to his mom’s house. He doesn't even live there. Yes, the Ottoman Empire was a large country. However, Ottomans didn't have some 'home base' on a tiny island trying to suck the world dry. Ottomans just... lived there. It’s called an empire. There’s a difference. But this Community Note is too stupid to know that. Being big doesn't mean you’re a colonizer. It’s like the guy writing the note is saying, 'I don't like Ottomans, so look at this map! It’s so large! That’s, colonization!' No it’s not. That’s just geography. You can’t just point at a large area and say, 'That’s a crime.' If I walk across the park, I’m not 'colonizing' the grass. I’m just walking.

My father-in-law worked on the original Yowies. He is insanely gifted. We were looking at the NBA Yowies. I asked him what it would take to bring back multipart animal kits and hard hitting environmental messaging. I will never forget his answer … “we can’t. we don’t know how.”
