Imagine what the World Cup would be like if it was being played at the 80,000 seat West Side stadium Mike Bloomberg wanted to build in 2008 next to Javitz Center on 11th Ave. NIMBYism & James Dolan's money stopped it from being built. The land is still unsued rail tracks today.

@barstoolswe @teriyakityrant @StatisticUrban HK is Chinese though; there was never a risk of ethnic conflict there. LKY’s real accomplishment (imo) was recognizing the existential threat of ethnic conflict and building a majority Chinese nation in the region that exists peacefully, at a time when that was not assured

I don’t really get Lee Kuan Yew worship beyond authoritarian bootlicking. To me, Singapore feels like the least impressive East Asian tiger. It's a prime port, it started with solid administration, and it's a city-state smaller than NYC. Compare Japan, China, Taiwan, or ROK.

@barstoolswe @teriyakityrant @StatisticUrban Okay, even if we say SG had a huge advantage in geography compared to Malaysia and Indonesia, that still doesn’t mean its natural peers are Japan/Taiwan/South Korea (or even Hong Kong)

@teriyakityrant @StatisticUrban They are all countries with a large native population, and a significant non-native Chinese population that is socioeconomically dominant. That’s a recipe for ethnic conflict (which is why SG was kicked out of Malaysia in the first place)

The fact that a large number of euros think American bread is cake because of a single legal ruling in Ireland regarding a single form of bread for Subway restaurants is something that needs to be studied extensively

@landvaluetax @FakeSungate It’s for yield protection mostly. Anyone admitted to Uchicago is hopefully smart enough to run the expected cost calculator and be able to get out of the (not actually binding) contract.

@JSWindsor19 @jjrhey @AndyBremmen @DenehyXXL The most famous course in golf didn’t admit women until the 2010s and black men until the 90s and they think they’ll waive rules lol. Elon Musk can’t even get into most of these places, they’re that stuck up and in their ways

@Bill93326 @JohnPetersonFW There is no world where a double of crown royal is $70. One must assume that it costs less than $30.

It does appear that way from the outside; that being said, private schooling is mostly redundant in Miami because the competent local gov’s been able to get around the CRA via intense investment in high-quality magnet (sometimes charter) programs. See: MAST, Archimedean Academy, SAS, Terra, etc.

Can I just say I am very grateful to the original designers of the Social Security program, some 90 years ago, for designing the program this way? Because if they hadn't there is 0% chance that either party would do anything to make social security solvent.

Social Security needs reform, but neither party is willing to take the lead on doing so. If we continue doing nothing, Social Security payouts will be cut automatically by 24% in 2032… That’s only two presidential elections away. 👉🏻 crfb.org/nostatespared
