Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury is the first female Speaker of Bangladesh National Parliament. She is a highly educated, polite, humble, and graceful woman. Yet, the way they have treated this innocent woman must be answered one day. This authoritarian rule has to come to an end. #BangladeshCrisis @ESandersFCDO @hrw @amnesty @AgnesCallamard @IHRF_English @IHumanRightsC @IhrcE @FCDOHumanRights @FranceskAlbs @Kennedy_HRC @EUAmbBangladesh @CWhiteleyEU @USAmbBangladesh @StateDRL @DRL_AS @LisaCurtisDC @State_SCA @SergioGor @BobBlackman @usembassydhaka @AyorkorBotchwey @SGCommonwealth @CJBdingo25 @Chellaney @mrubin1971 @ChathamHouse @kajakallas @lelispatricia @patlakath

Driven by a political agenda, Yunus’s interim government canceled several public welfare initiatives introduced by the Awami League government, including the national immunization program. This ultimately resulted in multiple child deaths and created an environment of havoc for families with newborns. Under the Awami League government, vaccination coverage exceeded 90% according to EPI data and was recognized by the World Health Organization. However, in 2025, coverage fell to 59.6%, indicating a sharp decline and raising questions about policy continuity and implementation capacity. This is deeply concerning. Failure to provide accessible, life saving vaccines, especially to children, is being seen as a violation of the right to life. Reduced immunization increases the risk of preventable diseases and child mortality, reflecting not just policy failure but also a broader systemic failure. Political instability and shifting priorities during the interim government have heavily impacted the health sector. The only thing the Yunus administration has focused on is suppressing the Awami League, while the present authorities remain engaged in a blame game rather than addressing the issue. The resurgence of diseases like measles poses both domestic and international risks. If outbreaks worsen, Bangladesh could face travel restrictions or negative health classifications, affecting education, labor mobility, and ultimately the economy. The Yunus administration should be held accountable for bringing the nation to the brink of disaster.

#BNP and PM #TariqueRahman have demonstrated their true “commitment” to #democracy by endorsing the Interim Govt’s deeply controversial decision to effectively ban one of the largest political parties in #Bangladesh through legally flawed amendments to the Anti-Terrorism Act, 2009. Today, under a proposal by Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, the BNP-majority #parliament passed the Anti-Terrorism (Amendment) Ordinance Bill 2026. This legislation ratifies provisions originally introduced by the Interim Govt, granting the executive sweeping powers to suspend the activities of any organization indefinitely. It also prohibits all forms of support for such proscribed entities. The provisions were previously used by the Interim Govt to impose a de-facto ban on the #AwamiLeague. The newly passed law goes even further by introducing penalties for violations, thereby entrenching and expanding the IG’s restrictions. This decision runs counter to the recommendations of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, @volker_turk, several independent experts from the @UN_HRC , as well as numerous international and national human rights and civil society organizations. By aligning itself with the Yunus Regime’s undemocratic position on the arbitrary banning of political parties, BNP has undermined its own credibility in advocating for democratic principles and has forfeited the moral high ground to critique other parties and their stance on democracy, including the Awami League. This marks a deeply troubling moment for #democracy in Bangladesh, with potentially far-reaching and destabilizing consequences for the country’s political landscape. …. #BangladeshCrisis @SRjudgeslawyers @UN_SPExperts @hrw @AgnesCallamard @UNHumanRights @antonioguterres @amnestysasia @PearsonElaine @ESandersFCDO @cnni @OHCHRAsia @StateDRL @EURightsAgency @kajakallas @GERonSouthAsia @State_SCA @eu_eeas @FCDOGovUK

Statement by Bangladesh Awami League Condemning the Ban Passed Through a One-Sided Bill in a Unilateral Parliament —— Today, the National Parliament of Bangladesh has been disgraced. A shameful chapter has been written in history. Through a so-called election, a parliament was formed which, disregarding democratic culture and values, has passed a bill banning the historic political party that led Bangladesh in the Liberation War—the Bangladesh Awami League. We express deep concern, strong condemnation, and protest against this disgraceful act. The National Parliament is a sacred institution. It represents the spirit of democratic culture in the country. Yet, it has been used in this manner to establish the dominance of anti-independence and anti-state forces. Such a decision is not merely targeted at a single political party; rather, it is a direct attack on democratic practices, a fair political system, and the fundamental rights of the people. The attempt to ban a political institution built through history, tradition, and struggle questions the very spirit of democracy and pushes the state toward a one-party or authoritarian path. It is also an act of hostility toward history itself—something the people of this country will never accept. We firmly believe that the strength of a political party lies with the people. If it remains beloved by the people, no force in the world can suppress it. Repression, bans, or the misuse of law can never bring lasting solutions; instead, they create instability and division in society and hinder democratic culture. In this context, we call upon all pro-democracy citizens, political parties, civil society, professional organizations, and the youth of the country to unite in the struggle for democratic rights, freedom of expression, and the rule of law. The victory of the people and democracy is inevitable. Inspired by history and strengthened in our beliefs, we will continue our movement and struggle. Joy Bangla Joy Bangabandhu Long live Bangladesh.

Shirin Sharmin, the Speaker, has been arrested in a fabricated July case. According to the case statement, on August 5 she was also on the streets alongside the police against the July militants. Then what about the incident where the army rescued her from inside Parliament at 2:30 a.m.? When a country no longer has laws or the rule of law, it descends into extreme disorder. Bangladesh is being deliberately pushed in that direction. Today, this drama has been staged to divert attention from the public’s outcry over fuel, gas, electricity, fertilizer, and essential commodities. The media is busy covering Shirin Sharmin’s arrest, as if everything in the country is normal. The people will respond to all of this very soon. Repression and oppression cannot keep people subdued for long. #Bangladesh #BangladeshCrisis

During the July–August (2024) violence, allegations were made that Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury was involved in an attempted murder. Does anyone truly believe this? Yet, she has been arrested in such a false case. The whole world knows these are fabricated cases. What is the objective of those who filed such false charges? Will the families of those who lost their lives in the July–August violence receive justice through these cases? Whatever the intention of those who filed false cases against us may be, it is certainly not justice. Who were behind the killings carried out using 7.62 caliber bullets and sniper rifles? During July–August, numerous police officers, Awami League activists, and many protesters lost their lives. I have said before and I reiterate now: there was infiltration by a third party among the protesters. This third party was also responsible for many of the killings. I believe that every death must be investigated and justice must be ensured. However, we are not witnessing any impartial investigation or fair judicial process. Instead, these deaths are being used as political tools, and there is ample evidence of case-trading surrounding these incidents. Filing false cases for monetary profit or cheap political gain is both unethical and illegal. We are maintaining a list of those who have filed these false cases. Remember, it does not take long for times to change. Alongside ensuring justice for all killings, those who have filed false cases will also be brought under the law, Insha’Allah. — Mohammad Ali Arafat

Bangladesh Awami League
Bangladesh Awami League expresses deep concern, strong condemnation, and protest over the physical and mental abuse inflicted on former Speaker of the National Parliament, Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, and her arrest in a completely baseless and fabricated case. Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury held a constitutionally mandated position in the National Parliament and was the country’s first female Speaker. Such inhumane treatment toward a competent, refined, and humane woman politician is contrary to democratic culture and the rule of law, and constitutes a grave violation of human rights. This kind of behavior toward an individual who served in a constitutional position of the state and played a vital role in upholding the dignity of the country’s democratic institutions is not only disgraceful but will stand as a deplorable example. The Bangladesh Awami League firmly believes that such false cases and acts of repression, carried out to satisfy political vendetta, have endangered the democratic environment of the country. This is against the principles of justice and represents a heinous misuse of the law. We demand the immediate and unconditional release of Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury. At the same time, we call for the withdrawal of all false and harassing cases filed against national leaders and people from all walks of life, and for the release of all political prisoners. There is no alternative to this if Bangladesh is to be built as a fair and democratic state. Joy Bangla Joy Bangabandhu Long live Bangladesh. #Bangladesh #BangladeshCrisis

The newspaper Kaler Kantho has published a detailed report on how Dr. Yunus abused power during the 18 months of the interim government’s rule, fulfilling his personal interests one after another. I have been speaking about all these issues for the past 18 months. @TheKalerKantho @Yunus_Centre @EUinBangladesh @UN @antonioguterres @amnestysasia @hrw @EU_Commission @grameenbank @GrameenAmerica Today, I will share an important matter with you. Many of you may have forgotten or may not know that Dr. Muhammad Yunus was also an advisor to the first Caretaker Government formed in 1996. Even then, he abused his power to bring the government statutory organization Grameen Bank under his control and finalized a blueprint for transferring money from Grameen Bank to other organizations. In other words, taking advantage of any opportunity to bake two breads for himself is Dr. Yunus’s lifelong habit. On 31 December 1996, Dr. Muhammad Yunus transferred Tk347.18 crore donated by the Norwegian donor agency NORAD to Grameen Bank, along with Tk44.25 crore from Grameen Bank’s Social Advancement Fund, to an organization called Grameen Kalyan. He did not take permission from Grameen Bank’s Board of Directors, Bangladesh Bank, or the government for this action. There is no second example of such a shameful case of institutional money laundering in Bangladesh’s history. When the donor agency NORAD became aware of this fund transfer, they asked Dr. Yunus for an explanation. Naturally, Dr. Yunus could not provide any explanation. After that, NORAD informed the Bangladesh government through the Norwegian Embassy. Because Grameen Bank is a government statutory organization, all donations/loans received by it are done through tripartite agreements (the Bangladeshi government, Grameen Bank, and the donor organization). After the Norwegian Embassy informed the Bangladesh government about the matter, Dr. Yunus became alarmed. He held multiple meetings with the Norwegian ambassador posted in Bangladesh to try to suppress the issue. When that did not work, on 1 April 1998, Dr. Yunus directly wrote a letter to NORAD’s Director General. The two-page letter signed by Dr. Yunus is attached with the post. Dr. Yunus starts the letter with “I need your help.” He mentions that if the government comes to know about the allegation of transferring the donation money, he will face serious problems. As a reason, he claims that many in the government are not supportive of Grameen Bank! This was a blatant lie, and he was blaming the government to cover up his own theft. Because just about a year before this letter, on 26 March 1997, the then Awami League government had granted a license to Grameen Phone. Towards the end of the letter, Dr. Yunus desperately requests a few minutes of meeting with NORAD’s Director General! To gain 100% control over this donation money that came for the welfare of the country’s poor people and to use it as he wished, Dr. Yunus illegally transferred it to other organizations. That same money was later invested in Grameen Phone through Grameen Telecom. One organization after another was built. But the poor people for whose benefit Dr. Yunus had obtained the Grameen Phone license from the then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina did not get even a single paisa spent on them. All institutions bearing the name Grameen are assets of the state and the people. Dr. Yunus has enjoyed and controlled them for a long time. By looting the money of the poor, he has built an empire worth nearly Tk30,000 crore. However, that day is not far when all these institutions will be rescued from the clutches of the world swindler Yunus and returned to their real owners—the poor people of the country. Dr. Yunus, start counting your days in the Grameen Empire! @aminulhoque1971

চিঠিটা ডঃ ইউনুস শুরুই করে, I need your help দিয়ে। @aminulhoque1971
