Many democracies give some weight to ritual votes in some way, but we are really an extreme case. Both cambers of Congress and the presidency are heavily weighted toward rural votes. The senate in particular is kind of nuts. WY has 67x the weight of CA in the senate! Even if we switched to a popular vote for president we would be outlier.

There is a good civic argument for the "electoral college". Almost all western democracies give more weight to rural voters, for the same reason as the original compromise when ratifying the Constitution. Without some counterbalance, rural areas simply become "colonies" of urban areas, with government serving the interests of urban areas over the wishes of rural areas. In almost all western democracies, the person leading the country is not chosen by a popular vote, but by representatives. Those representatives are in turn chosen primarily as local representatives for individual communities. The electoral college giving more voting power to some is not a violation of democratic principles, but the norm in western liberal democracies.

There's no good civic argument for the electoral college. It was arguably necessary to ensure the ratification of the Constitution, but it's an anti-democratic device that gives some American citizens far more voting power than others, based purely on where they live.

@ArcanesValor @Steve_Sailer @JamesSurowiecki @ElizabethGMat Thanks! This (along with some similar studies) is actually pretty convincing. There are confounding factors like education that push the other way, but conservative social views are petty clearly correlated with marriage duration when controlling for everything else.

When you get married, if it’s a marriage that means more to both of you than a legal merger, there’s no “his” and “mine” anymore. I would tell my sons not to marry any woman to who wasn’t eager to take his name. NOT because I care in theory whether they take his or hers. But because in practice it’s a sign that she has a view of marriage that’s something other than the kind of oneness on a single team that you should have with a spouse.
Jill Filipovic@JillFilipovic

I truly hate this argument, which assumes men simply have names but women’s are all somehow men’s. By this logic, it’s not your dad’s name either - it’s his dad’s. And not his either - his dad’s. Your name is actually your name. And yes of course women should have the legal right to change their names in marriage but let’s please not lie to ourselves that marital name-changing isn’t incredibly sexist and a very literal manifestation of patriarchal power. So is patrilineal naming for children, btw. One answer to “but it’s my dad’s name” might be to stop giving children dad’s name for a while.

No, it’s literally the logic behind what our founders did, and it’s literally the tyranny we’d live under if we lost the electoral college. Perhaps electors should be awarded more proportionally than most states’ winner-take-all systems, but we must remain vigilant against the oppressive nature of unfettered democracy.

@JamesSurowiecki @ElizabethGMat C'mon, let's be realistic about how sexual attraction works in practice. A man who wants his wife to take his surname is a man. A man who takes his wife's surname is either a social-climbing bounder like Barry Lyndon or a feminist dweeb. Neither marriage will last.

The idea that Gen Z is very right wing and abandoned Trump because he’s not right wing enough is a massive delusion that has no basis in fact, and that is why many people are scrambling to figure out why they no longer like him.

@Meritocrating Mass deportations are happening as we speak. I will grant you that no one voted for the Iran War. That being said, it cannot explain the dropoff in Zoomer support for Trump because that happened in March 2025, long before the Iran conflict began

@markburgess_osl "We invented a machine that carries you from point A to point B. We just need to feed it about 1 acre of Amazon rainforest a day. But is it safe? Oh my goodness, no, that machine kills over a million people a year worldwide." See how stupid you sound? Don't fucking drive then.

@SpaceKoala @Electrikhan_ See, you are doing it again. To be clear, I'm a fan of good government, of civilization in general, and of this society in particular. But these are three different things, and conflating them is either bad logic or cheap rhetoric.

@LLCodyJ @Century_Toad @ArmedEducator @fawwazanvilen Nation defense, police, fire, EMS, roads, courts/dispute resolution, air traffic control, efficient use natural resource, clean air, clean water…. This is an extremely well documented economic phenomenon. Completely economically illiterate to claim it’s not real.

@fawwazanvilen The answer is that you should reevaluate its importance. If people are unwilling to pay for that service, it’s a good signal that it may not be important.

BREAKING: Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand had 90+ NEW YORKERS ARRESTED demanding NO MORE WEAPONS for Israel. Right now, U.S. weapons are being used to bomb south Lebanon, displace families in the West Bank, and continue the assault on Gaza. And still, our government wants to send more.

Friend of mine is 55 years old, married and doesn’t want modern strategy board games. His household income is roughly $63k/yearly and he's only one month behind on the rent. He has 4 figures saved for retirement, and visits Coney Island multiple times a year. I think people like this are going to regret not having modern strategy board games in their future. One day, when he’s old, all he will have to look back on is a decent credit rating and a healthy retirement fund. Instead of putting that money towards having modern strategy board games and building a closet full of cardboard and meeples, he’s choosing practicality. This just seems so wasteful and boring to me.
