So, I’m currently reading through Rutherford’s Letters. During my study this week, I’ve noticed a stark contrast between the ostensibly “reformed” Webbonites / Ogden dorks and actual Reformed men of the faith. Serious question: since Joel Webbon wants a return to 17th century Reformed faith, does that include how a man ought treat women and Jews? Notice: Samuel Rutherford, writing to Lady Kenmure after the death of her child (Letters, XXVIII, 1633), demonstrates how a faithful minister cared for sisters and honored God’s covenant: “Madam, stir up your husband to lay hold upon the covenant, and to do good. What hath he to do with the world? It is not his inheritance… He will embrace both us, the little young sister, and the elder sister, the Church of the Jews; and there will yet be a day of it.” Rutherford consoles, guides, and affirms both sisters in Christ and the unbelieving Jews, grounding everything in Christ and covenant faithfulness. Now compare that to Webbon: he tells a Christian woman “silence Jew. It’s Christmas,” calls women pigs, mocks men who honor sisters as “white knights,” and labels anyone affirming the restoration of Jews as a heretic of dispensationalism. If this is what “restoring 17th-century Reformed faith” looks like, the hypocrisy and revisionism is wild. Rutherford’s world was covenantal and careful; Webbon’s is abusive, dismissive, and selective, twisting doctrine to justify cruelty. He’s an obvious deceiver; a workman of Satan. Mark and avoid.
