on lightness There's a version of waking up that gets sold as fire. burn it down, see through everything, transcend the herd. I don't think that one is real. Or rather, I think it's another costume the same old self puts on, and you can spot it because the people wearing it are exhausting and a little mean. The real version is much quieter and almost embarrassing to describe, because it doesn't sound like much. It's something like this: you stop reaching, for a moment, for the thing you usually reach for. And in that moment you notice you're okay. Not happy, necessarily. Not fixed. Just okay, in a way that doesn't need anything added to it. And then you reach again, because reaching is a habit and habits are slow. But you noticed. And the next time the gap is a little longer. And eventually the gap is most of your life, and the reaching is the exception, and you realize you've been living inside something you used to think was the goal, except it doesn't feel like an achievement. It feels like the floor was always there. The thing nobody tells you is that the floor is mostly made of small permissions. Permission to feel a sadness without solving it. Permission to notice something true about another person without needing them to change. Permission to be tired without making the tiredness mean anything. Permission to enjoy a sandwich. Permission to not have an opinion on a thing everyone has an opinion on. Permission to sit on a train and watch the landscape and let that be the entire activity. Each of these sounds trivial. None of them are. Each one is a place where you used to grab and now you don't, and the not-grabbing is the whole practice. There's no further step. There's no level you graduate to. You just keep finding new places where you were holding on without knowing it, and you put them down, and your hands get a little freer, and the world gets a little lighter, and that's it. That's the secret. There's no second secret behind it. If you're suffering right now, this won't sound like enough. I know. It didn't sound like enough to me either, when I needed it to sound like more. The thing I'd say, gently, is that the painkillers you're reaching for are probably the thing keeping you exactly where you are. Not because they're evil. Because they work just well enough. The way out is not more of them and not less of them by force. It's just noticing, once, what you reach for, and getting curious about what's underneath. Curious, not stern. The sternness is another grab. And if you're not suffering, if you're already somewhere quiet.. then the only thing left to say is that you're allowed to stay. You don't have to earn it by suffering more. You don't have to prove it by performing wisdom. You can just sit in it, and notice the landscape, and feel a small sadness about the people who are still snagged, and let that sadness be light, and let the lightness be the whole point. Delight is available. It was always available. The painkillers were in the way. That's the only news.

its funny how one sometimes can’t tell the madman from the visionary makes sense: if you can’t see as far ahead, how could you tell the difference

@peterwildeford this is the estimate i’d expect 👌 did you research the lab leak angle? feels like a slightly new phenomenon that may be worth bumping the estimate for if the area has labs.

HANTAVIRUS SITUATION SUMMARY The Andes-strain hantavirus outbreak aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship is tragic. But I estimate a <1% chance this becomes a pandemic. It is on track to self-extinguish within weeks. This outbreak fits the well-characterized 30-year epidemiology of Andes virus. Transmission requires very close, prolonged contact (e.g. a shared bed or intimate caregiving). It does not work with mere airborne exposure like the coronavirus. This severely limits the potential for this to spread and become a pandemic. R0 in casual-contact settings is effectively zero; in intimate-contact settings it appears to be modestly above 1 but not self-sustaining once contact patterns break. No Andes outbreak has historically produced sustained chains beyond close-contact networks. The largest documented event is the 2018–19 Epuyén outbreak with 34 cases, 11 deaths, traced through identifiable contact chains, then over. Cruise ships are unusually efficient amplifiers of shared-air, shared-surface, shared-meal pathogens. Likely one (or two) rodent-acquired index cases from Patagonia, then a small fan-out among cabin-sharing close contacts, with no evidence of transmission outside that pattern. Furthermore, every passenger and crew member is known + tracked. The bad news is that the case fatality is genuinely high (~35–50%) with no antiviral available. Very dangerous for those exposed.

23 hantavirus cruise passengers returned home to 'all corners,' including to the US - and one is already sick trib.al/4yZ9lID

THE $10,000 DEBATE YOU'VE BEEN WAITING FOR: @ESYudkowsky vs. @47fucb4r8c69323 Tensions run high as 47fucb confronts Eliezer about his “If Anyone Builds It, Everyone Dies” rhetoric: 47f warns that it could incite unstable individuals to harm AI researchers and their families, but Eliezer maintains that the possibility of extinction from superintelligent AI is too high to *not* speak out about. They also clash over whether we truly understand how LLMs work and what their fundamental limits are. Watch the full debate below, raw & unabridged 👇

It's going to take a few days for my debate with @ESYudkowsky aka Yud the Stud but money is on its way. We still need a podcast forum for this, any takers? I honestly dgaf, I'm staying anonymous so not like this is going to benefit me at all.

@glitteringvoid @lucasmeijer It could be achieved with today's technology, but moral standards would disagree. Probably why it isnt published even if achieved. Today's LLMs are not conscious though, they work more like the linguistic centers of the brain without the rest of the complexity lile hormones etc.

@lucasmeijer Consciousness is really simple. It emerges from the interactions and dynamics of your "carbon-based computer" which is your brain. Nothing else.
