Of course the first guys bringing this issue to the publicโs attention were going to be low class with all of the baggage that comes with. So often the discussion is railroaded by this baggage, the questionable moral character of Tommy, his relationships, his crude manner of speaking etc etcโฆ heโs just some Oik no need to pay him any mind.
Which is of course why these girls were targeted. They were all from this strata of society. One thatโs easily dismissed. Easily forgotten. Easily ignored.

They're a technological solution to a political problem (too much regulation of nuclear power).
Nuclear reactors want to be big, because of the scaling of surface area and volume: you want more volume per unit surface area because surface area is a cost.

@xwanyex People aren't mad that boomers got wealthier as they aged. People are mad that they are significantly poorer at the same age as previous generations were, and the only response from these demons is "we worked harder than you and denied more pleasures" which is demonstrably false

Thereโs obvious a lot of boomer hate, but I rarely see it articulated in exactly these terms. As society gets richer (and has remained rich for an extended period of time), one should expect there to be ever larger gaps between older people and younger people. If the society is poor, then everybodyโs poor. But if the society is rich, then the people who have been enjoying its prosperity for decades are obviously going to, on average, have collected more of its fruits.
The fairer and more prosperous the economy, the greater this effect, so in one sense itโs exactly what youโd expect and desire.
But there are obviously ways in which this is undesirable, especially for family formation and access to housing.

@KelseyTuoc @shlevy Seems manifestly unjust to send someone to prison for 25 minutes for prying open a door with the owner's consent. If he hadn't had the owner's consent, and broke in anyway knowing he had two strikes, then it seems reasonable.

@shlevy It seems obviously and manifestly unjust to me to send someone to prison for 25 years for trying to pry open a door if the property owner says they were welcome, and it more broadly does not seem like he was a dangerous person guaranteed to keep offending.

Iโm a former 3 strikes skeptic myself, so I get where the hesitation comes from, but I would be curious to see a concrete case of someone who was or wouldโve been subject to a realistic 3 strikes law where you think it wouldโve been unjust.

@CandideIII @eigenrobot All Portugal did was prevent possession from going on your criminal record. They still investigated possession and imposed fines or community service. And of course all distribution was still fully criminal. Basically worst of all worlds, which was my point.

@Jake_Etcetera @eigenrobot Hasn't Portugal sort of tried it? Problem is, if you decriminalize you're going to get a very large number of people off themselves or burn their brains out with drugs in short order, and you have to have stomach for that and political capital to fend off inevitable do-gooders.

i used to agree with this but after reviewing how drug decriminalization and homelessness decriminalization and gambling decriminalization have gone i no longer do

@Ken67547214 Prostitution should just so obviously not be illegal that at some point everyone just stops pretending they care about the law, on both sides of the issue. This happens everywhere.
