@DanielSingerS yea I personally couldn't say whether the ~90-75% intercept rate from beginning -> end of conflict is good or not, but people in the industry dont seem upset with the performance

@_Three_Steps_ It seemed like our missile interceptors failed to protect a lot of assets.

I don't think this is that hard to understand. Legacy defense companies failed us during the Iran war and they are going to take the blame.

@gipper913 @stephenfhayes the piece actually doesn't mention crime at all (outside of there not being the will to do what it takes to end homelessness). it mostly centers on the danger of US drivers and how far away things are from home generally. it's an interesting non-US perspective
English

@stephenfhayes We free roamed as kids in the 1980s and I grew up in the NY metro area. Crime rates / stats were considerably worse then. It’s a (bad) cultural shift in US parenting towards hyper vigilance that stifles the development of kids’ ability to be independent.

When we lived in Spain, we let our relatively young children (13, 11, 8) roam around our neighborhood with scarcely a thought about their safety. They'd walk several blocks to a corner market for fresh-squeezed OJ on their own, hit a popular novelty shop (Ale Hop) even further away. We'd leave them playing in the grassy fields of Retiro Park while we had cafe con leches well out of eyesight. It all felt safe -- it all was safe.
That's not the case here in the US and we spend a lot of time thinking about why. In this terrific essay linked below, Stephanie Murray gets at the explanation.

Some might consider a top 10 ranked fighter having to deliver for UberEats to make ends meet a bit of a bad look for the organisation employing her rather than a biceps emoji moment.

When the @FCC designated 988 as a 3-digit number for suicide prevention in 2019-2020, I knew it would save lives. And I hoped we would someday have empirical evidence of how many.
That day has come. From 988's activation in July 2022 to December 2024, researchers just reported in @JAMA_current that there were "4,372 fewer suicides of adolescents and young adults, ages 15 to 34, than had been projected." And to ensure that this decrease was 988-related, they measured relative usage of the hotline by state, making a "striking" finding: "10 states with the largest increases in 988 calls experienced an 18.2 percent reduction in observed suicides compared with expected suicides."
Filled with gratitude to the legislators, executive branch officials, advocates, FCC staff, and @988Lifeline calltakers who helped us reach this milestone. So many more Americans are living today because of all you've done. x.com/AjitPai/status…

@alexbward @Lingling_Wei good thing the embarrassment in Iran (coupled with Russia’s embarrassment) is a better deterrent than the entire US arsenal

“A US special forces soldier involved in the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro was arrested for allegedly betting on that operation, netting him $400,000 in profits, according to a person familiar with the matter...
The trader opened an account in late December on Polymarket, one of the best-known prediction markets. He placed about $32,000 that Maduro would be “out” by January. The bet was a long-shot.”

@BDOH @AaronBlake im sure Trump sending out stimulus checks in ‘20 and signing 2 Trillion of new spending into law that year had nothing to do with the inflation that occurred in ‘21 and beyond
English

@AaronBlake So crazy, the last time Democrats were in charge, Americans experienced NINE PERCENT inflation and their policies raised prices forever.
It's like choosing the arsonist to light the candles in church.
English

@sidprabhu with eggs (commodity) now at 23c/dozen, the prepackaged egg whites are still priced at the same level they were after prices were raised when eggs were over $8/dozen last year
English

Its a one time change in the price level, not inflation.

@jpodhoretz the ‘20 (Trump) census ‘robbing’ red states is a far dumber argument than the the dumb NY one
English

I'm sorry, but this is ridiculous. Previous fights involved census apportionment, in NC and NY--maps were aggressive and courts got involved. Texas introduced Calvinball.
Guy Benson@guypbenson
Indeed, the “Texas started it” premise is incorrect (plus CA already answered). NY Dems went before TX (see below), to say nothing of the wild existing Dem gerrymanders in places like IL & MD. And to say nothing of admitted 2020 Census miscounts robbing red states of 6-10 seats.

@PatrickRuffini this is cope but relatively fair. context matters; if this exact referendum is run in April '24 NO wins much much easier than YES wins tonight
English

some moneyed entity, as opposed to good hearted members of the public better be paying for the next @StateNavigate VA poll

@edyang73 @jakehirsch77 @PatrickRuffini if there are any, other than a FL gerrymander, they wont go past the VA borders

The stats here are kind of remarkable. BART's new fare gates have led to a 1,000-hour decline in clean up time; 41% drop in crime; and $10 million increase in projected revenue. theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/04/…
