What Artemis II is doing differently (right now, April 6, 2026) Artemis II is not entering lunar orbit. It’s on a free-return flyby trajectory—a big, looping path that swings the Orion spacecraft far out behind the Moon (closest approach around 4,000–6,000+ miles / ~6,400–9,700+ km from the surface, and venturing ~4,700 miles behind the far side).  From that much greater distance: • The crew gets a dramatically wider field of view of the lunar surface. • They can see large-scale features of the far side all at once, including the entire Orientale Basin (a massive ~600-mile-wide impact crater that straddles the near and far sides). NASA has explicitly called this “the first time the entire basin has been seen with human eyes.”  • The lighting/angle during their pass also reveals portions of the far side in ways Apollo crews never experienced from their low orbits. That’s why the astronauts (and NASA) are describing it as “absolutely spectacular,” “not the Moon that I’m used to seeing,” and a historic first glimpse of certain far-side terrain.  It’s not that no human has ever been to the far side—it’s that no human has ever had this vantage point to take in the full sweep of it.

This week, I terminated both Afshar and her daughter's legal status and they are now in ICE custody, pending removal from the United States.
