By aligning itself with the Yunus Regime’s undemocratic position on the arbitrary banning of political parties, BNP has undermined its own credibility in advocating for democratic principles and has forfeited the moral high ground to critique other parties and their stance on democracy, including the Awami League.
Bangladesh Watch@bdwatch2024

#BNP and PM #TariqueRahman have demonstrated their true “commitment” to #democracy by endorsing the Interim Govt’s deeply controversial decision to effectively ban one of the largest political parties in #Bangladesh through legally flawed amendments to the Anti-Terrorism Act, 2009. Today, under a proposal by Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, the BNP-majority #parliament passed the Anti-Terrorism (Amendment) Ordinance Bill 2026. This legislation ratifies provisions originally introduced by the Interim Govt, granting the executive sweeping powers to suspend the activities of any organization indefinitely. It also prohibits all forms of support for such proscribed entities. The provisions were previously used by the Interim Govt to impose a de-facto ban on the #AwamiLeague. The newly passed law goes even further by introducing penalties for violations, thereby entrenching and expanding the IG’s restrictions. This decision runs counter to the recommendations of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, @volker_turk, several independent experts from the @UN_HRC , as well as numerous international and national human rights and civil society organizations. By aligning itself with the Yunus Regime’s undemocratic position on the arbitrary banning of political parties, BNP has undermined its own credibility in advocating for democratic principles and has forfeited the moral high ground to critique other parties and their stance on democracy, including the Awami League. This marks a deeply troubling moment for #democracy in Bangladesh, with potentially far-reaching and destabilizing consequences for the country’s political landscape. …. #BangladeshCrisis @SRjudgeslawyers @UN_SPExperts @hrw @AgnesCallamard @UNHumanRights @antonioguterres @amnestysasia @PearsonElaine @ESandersFCDO @cnni @OHCHRAsia @StateDRL @EURightsAgency @kajakallas @GERonSouthAsia @State_SCA @eu_eeas @FCDOGovUK

Another arrest in #Bangladesh over alleged “anti-state” and “anti-government” #socialmedia posts raises serious concerns. #Jamaat’s backing results in bail; what about the others?  According to a complaint filed in court, a woman named Bibi Sauda was arrested from #Bhola by the police’s Cyber Crime Investigation (CCI) unit for posting content on #Facebook deemed critical of the #BNP Govt. The complaint specifically cites her remarks about Prime Minister #TariqueRahman and Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, alleging violations of the Cyber Security Ordinance, 2025. However, after being produced in court, Bibi was granted bail. This raises an obvious question: why the swift relief? Reports suggest that her affiliation with #JamaatEIslami played a role. The party publicly demanded her release through a press conference, while its senior leaders condemned the arrest on social media, pressure that appears to have influenced the outcome. News: jamuna.tv/all-bangladesh… But what about others without such backing? Consider the case of Azizul Haque, arrested days earlier from Muktagacha in #Mymensingh for allegedly sharing “insulting” content about the PM Tarique Rahman. Charged under both the Anti-Terrorism Act and the Cyber Security Ordinance, he continues to remain in detention. News: shorturl.at/l0Cc2  Or take the case of Shaon Mahmud from Srinagar in #Munshiganj, arrested on April 2, 2026 under the Anti-Terrorism Act for allegedly making objectionable comments about Tarique Rahman. Notably, he was not initially detained by law enforcement, but by activists of #JuboDal, the BNP’s youth wing, before being handed over to police. One activist, Ujjwal Khan, openly stated to the press:
“Shaon posted in foul language about the current Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. After learning about the matter, we arrested him and handed him over to the police. Such audacity against the beloved leader of crores of people cannot be accepted.” These cases point to a troubling pattern: - The use of broad legal provisions to criminalize online expression; - Apparent political influence over arrests and bail decisions;
- Unequal application of the law depending on political affiliation. Together, they raise pressing concerns about due process, freedom of expression, and the rule of law in Bangladesh today. This stands in stark contrast to BNP’s stance before the Feb 2026 election. Tarique Rahman himself had shared a cartoon mocking him and encouraged people to do the same. BNP had also demanded the release of an individual previously detained for criticising him. News:  thedailystar.net/news/banglades…  In just a matter of weeks, that position appears to have reversed. Now, BNP leaders are filing cases against critics of their supreme leader across the country, while the party and the PMO publicly defends such indefensible actions. …. #BangladeshCrisis #FreeSpeech @Irenekhan @article19org @Ginitastar @amnestysasia @IBAHRI @meeganguly @hrw @PearsonElaine @AgnesCallamard @ESandersFCDO @volker_turk @StateDRL @UNHumanRights @forum_asia @FortifyRights  @IHRF_English @BonaveroIHR @UN_HRC

When #TariqueRahman returned to #Bangladesh after nearly 18 years in exile, he promised the nation that he had a “plan.” In less than two months into his government, that plan is beginning to take shape; and it is raising serious concerns. Rather than advancing long-discussed reform agendas, the #BNP Govt appears to be moving in the opposite direction: shelving key governance reforms while continuing, and in some cases intensifying, the persecution of political opponents. A BNP-led parliamentary special committee has reportedly recommended against ratifying 20 ordinances introduced during the #Yunus-led Interim Govt. Many of these measures were widely seen as essential for strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring accountability. They included provisions aimed at safeguarding judicial independence, preventing enforced disappearances, and reinforcing the roles of critical bodies such as the Anti-Corruption Commission and the National Human Rights Commission. News:  thedailystar.net/opinion/editor… Yet, in a striking contrast, one of the most controversial legal changes from the Interim Govt period, the amendment to the Anti-Terrorism Act, 2009, is not only being retained but potentially expanded. This amendment grants the executive sweeping powers to unilaterally and indefinitely suspend the activities of any org, including political parties. It has already drawn sustained criticism from #humanrights advocates, including multiple experts affiliated with the @UN_HRC, who warned about its broad scope and potential for abuse. See: spcommreports.ohchr.org/TMResultsBase/… Recent reports suggest that the BNP Govt is not merely preserving these powers but strengthening them further by introducing penalties for violations. The implications are significant: not only could political parties, such as the #AwamiLeague, face continued bans under this framework, but individuals expressing support for such groups, whether online or offline, could also face criminal sanctions.  Taken together, these developments suggest a deeply concerning trajectory: - Reform initiatives aimed at improving governance and accountability are being discarded;   - Expansive executive powers are being preserved and reinforced; and - Legal tools are increasingly being used to target political opposition and dissent. …. #BangladeshCrisis @State_SCA @usembassydhaka @AusHCBangladesh @UKinBangladesh @NorwayAmbBD @SwedeninBD @DKAmbBD @UNinBangladesh @UNDP @WorldBankSAsia @volker_turk @FRauBangladesh @CanHCBangladesh @GERonSouthAsia @FCDOGovUK

Lemkin Institute for Genocide Prevention
The Lemkin Institute for Genocide Prevention and Human Security joins many other voices in the world in raising the alarm about the genocidal threats being made by U.S. President Donald Trump against the state and the people of Iran. “A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again,“ he posted on Truth Social at 8 AM this morning, threatening nothing less than collective annihilation. The President’s language demonstrates how radicalized the U.S. government has become under his second administration. In just one year of this administration’s virtually unchallenged brutality against immigrants and trans people at home and support for one of the world’s most brutal genocides abroad, the U.S. government seems to have begun to embrace genocidal thinking in all of its conduct at home and abroad. It is imperative that the U.S. President be stopped from committing war crimes, crimes against humanity, and possibly genocide against Iran’s ancient civilization. The burden to act rests with powerholders in the U.S., who must decide immediately whether to prevent these crimes or choose to be complicit in them. If they choose the latter, they can be sure that history will not look kindly on them. The world is at a crossroads. President Trump has announced, in no uncertain terms, his intention to commit the most heinous crime imaginable against the people of Iran, in retaliation for the Iranian government’s efforts to defend itself against an illegal war of aggression. If world leaders allow the U.S. to “obliterate” Iran, there will not be peace in the world for a very long time. Obliteration will become the norm, and no country, no region, no peoples will be safe from it. Not only will international law become meaningless – more so that it is even now – but also the most extreme form of attack will be the starting point for all future military engagements and genocide will grow like a fungus to rapidly consume our planet. bit.ly/TrumpGenocidal…

First, Tarique Rahman’s stated commitment to the rule of law appears increasingly questionable; Second, the pattern of political targeting initiated under the Yunus regime is not only continuing but intensifying under the BNP Govt; Third, Bangladesh risks entering another prolonged cycle of political retaliation that could destabilize the nation for years to come.
Bangladesh Watch@bdwatch2024

#Bangladesh’s first female Speaker arrested by the #BNP Govt in a trumped-up, politically motivated case stemming from the events of July–August 2024. Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, the first woman to serve as Speaker of the National #Parliament, was detained earlier today by the Detective Branch of Police in connection with a “attempted murder” case filed at Lalbagh Police Station in #Dhaka. The case relates to the violence during the Anti-Quota Movement of July–August 2024. DB claims they are examining her alleged “involvement” in incidents of violence and vandalism during that period, an assertion that is as laughable as it is sad. News: thedailystar.net/news/crime-jus… In Bangladesh, arrests of this scale rarely occur without approval from the highest levels of government. It is therefore reasonable to conclude that the current administration led by #TariqueRahman played a decisive role in this action. Notably, under the previous #Yunus-led Interim Govt, former Deputy Speaker Shamsul Haque was also arrested in October 2024 under a similar wholesale criminal case tied to the same events. Dr. Chaudhury served as Speaker from April 30, 2013, until her forced resignation on September 2, 2024. A top constitutional lawyer, she also served as Chairperson of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association from 2014 to 2017, the first ever Bangladeshi to hold the position. This arrest highlights three troubling realities: First, Tarique Rahman’s stated commitment to the rule of law appears increasingly questionable; Second, the pattern of political targeting initiated under the Yunus regime is not only continuing but intensifying under the BNP Govt; Third, Bangladesh risks entering another prolonged cycle of political retaliation that could destabilize the nation for years to come. …. #BangladeshCrisis @commonwealthsec @IPUparliament @hrw @amnestysasia @meeganguly @PearsonElaine @ESandersFCDO @volker_turk @UNHumanRights @StateDRL @AgnesCallamard @justiceinfonet @IBAHRI @forum_asia @article19org @FortifyRights @BonaveroIHR @IHRF_English

Recent #corruption allegations involving multiple prosecutors have once again drawn attention to the troubled state of #Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal (ICTBD). While these scandals may be the latest flashpoint, they are far from isolated incidents. Since its reconstitution under the Yunus-led Interim Govt, the tribunal has faced sustained criticism over its jurisdiction, impartiality, prosecutorial conduct, and adherence to due process. Jurisdictional Overreach The ICTBD was established under the International Crimes (Tribunals) Act, 1973, with a narrowly defined mandate: to prosecute individuals responsible for genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity committed during the 1971 Liberation War. Its purpose was never to adjudicate contemporary criminal allegations.  Judicial Independence and Capacity From its outset, the ICTBD’s credibility has been undermined by concerns regarding the independence and qualifications of its judiciary. Several judges appointed to the ICTBD have had overt political affiliations, casting doubt on their impartiality. For instance, one judge, Shafiul Alam Mahmud, has been associated with the BNP. More broadly, none of the appointed judges possessed prior experience in adjudicating international crimes, and at least one reportedly lacked any judicial experience whatsoever. Prosecutorial Bias and Corruption Allegations Concerns about bias extend beyond the bench to the prosecution. The composition of the prosecutorial team has been widely criticized for its political affiliations. Former Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam had longstanding ties to #JamaatEIslami and had previously defended several of its leaders before the same tribunal. Other prosecutors have similarly been linked to partisan political activities, with Gazi Monowar Hossain Tamim engaging in Jamaat’s political activities whilst being a prosecutor, while Saimum Reza Takulder was a member of BNP’s ICT Forum.  These concerns have been compounded by serious corruption allegations. Reports suggest that members of the prosecution engaged in bribery and other unethical conduct, including negotiating bail arrangements in exchange for payments. Disturbingly, key evidence related to these allegations, such as CCTV footage, has reportedly gone missing, raising further questions about accountability and institutional integrity. Lack of Fair Trial Guarantees Perhaps most troubling are the apparent violations of fundamental fair trial principles. Several accused individuals, including former Prime Minister #SheikhHasina, are being tried in absentia for charges that carry the death penalty. Reports indicate that these individuals have not been formally notified of the charges against them. Compounding this issue is the lack of effective legal representation for trials in absentia. Many defendants are represented by state-appointed counsels with whom they have had no communication and to whom they have given no instructions. The quality of defense provided under these circumstances has been widely criticized as inadequate. Procedural Irregularities The tribunal’s procedural conduct has also come under scrutiny. In some cases, trials have reportedly commenced without the defense being provided essential documents, such as charge framing orders. Additionally, the tribunal has deviated from its own rules regarding pre-trial detention for multipe, accused. Taken together, these issues paint a troubling picture of an institution struggling to uphold the principles of justice it was designed to serve. While the prosecution of grave int’l crimes is an essential component of accountability, it must be conducted within a framework that ensures fairness, impartiality, and adherence to the rule of law. Without proper review and significant reforms to address jurisdictional overreach, political bias, corruption, and procedural deficiencies, the credibility of the ICTBD will remain in question, both domestically and internationally. _

This morning, the Prime Minister convened a first of its kind council of private sector entrepreneurs, carefully selected to address economic and geopolitical challenges. This group will serve as a sounding board, providing insights into the realities of manufacturing in Bangladesh 🇧🇩 from the perspective of local companies. The primary goal of this council is to bridge the gap between business and government, enhancing policy quality, implementation, and governance. Additionally, it aims to boost competitiveness, explore new sectors, create quality jobs, and develop human capital. During today's meeting, the group discussed various cross-cutting issues, including deregulation, energy, human capital, taxation, logistics, country branding, and new technologies. The council will meet with the Prime Minister every three months to continue these important discussions.

Continuation of the Problematic Ban on #AwamiLeague Will Not Only Be Disastrous for #Bangladesh But Also #BNP. In May 2025, the Interim Govt led by Muhammad #Yunus introduced a controversial amendment to the Anti-Terrorism Act 2009, granting the executive branch sweeping powers to suspend the activities of any organisation indefinitely. This authority was immediately used to halt all activities of the Awami League and its affiliated bodies. In addition, the amendment enabled a blanket prohibition on any form of publicity for the party, including online expression. This effectively amounted to a de facto “ban” without the use of the word “ban”. Human rights activists raised immediate and serious concerns. In the months that followed, hundreds of individuals, including AL activists and supporters, journalists, freedom fighters, students, and former bureaucrats, were arrested under the amended law. Many remain in arbitrary detention. In Dec 2025, three United Nations experts issued a formal communication to Dr. Yunus, expressing concern that the de facto ban AL ban constitutes “unnecessary and disproportionate restrictions” on fundamental rights including the freedoms of association, peaceful assembly, and expression, as well as the right to participate in public affairs. These protections are guaranteed under #Bangladesh’s obligations pursuant to the Int’l Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) as well under the Constitution of Bangladesh. The amendment and its application by the Yunus-led Interim Govt have been widely criticised for several key reasons: - The authority to impose such sweeping restrictions rests with the executive rather than the judiciary; - No meaningful judicial process was followed in determining AL’s culpability; - The high evidentiary threshold typically required for banning an org. was not met; - The amendment does not conform with int’l standards for prohibiting orgs under counter-terrorism law.  - The measures are unnecessary and disproportionate in scope especially given the justifications used by the Interim Govt in their executive order; Among others. During that period, the top leadership of the BNP, including Party Chair #TariqueRahman and Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, repeatedly stated that the party does not support banning any political party, particularly through executive orders. Yet recent media reports suggest that the BNP is now moving to ratify the  controversial ATA amendment through legislation, effectively maintaining the de facto ban on one of the country’s largest political parties. This raises an important question: were those earlier statements merely pre-election rhetoric, while current actions reveal the party’s true position? That interpretation is difficult to dismiss. The continuation of the ban appears politically expedient. By sidelining its principal rival ahead of the February 2026 parliamentary elections, the BNP benefited from a largely one-sided contest. The BNP has long portrayed itself as a champion of democratic values, crediting its founder #ZiaurRahman with restoring parliamentary democracy and presenting #KhaledaZia as an uncompromising democratic figure. However, when measured against actual actions, this narrative becomes increasingly difficult to sustain. On multiple occasions, the party has been linked to decisions that undermined democratic norms, from holding the disputed February 1996 elections without the participation of major opposition parties, to manipulating the caretaker govt system in 2006 to install a preferred individual- thed pattern is hard to ignore. The IG’s ATA amendment granting the govt sweeping powers to ban political parties, represents one of the most serious threats to democratic principles in Bangladesh in recent years. By choosing to uphold this framework, BNP is not only endangering democratic norms, but also setting a dangerous precedent, one that could eventually be used against it. …..

Fascinating discussion ongoing. It seems, @BangladeshSonod has challenged some of our understanding we took for granted. Great to see some good quality Intellectual exercise. Shred those lazy fats out of your brain cells.
Iconus Clustus@IconusClustus

For people who have reservations about the @BangladeshSonod regarding its entry specifically on "Nationalism," here are my two cents: Being Bangalee is GEOHISTORICAL, not ETHNOLINGUISTIC. To define 'Bangalee' as an "ethnolinguistic" identity is to mistake the vessel for the soul; being Bangalee is, fundamentally, a geohistorical condition. While critics may argue that the Bangla language is the sole bedrock of this identity, such a view ignores that the language itself was forged by the unique, fluid ecology of the Bengal Delta - a landscape that dictated how people moved, traded, and resisted. This identity is not just a collection of shared phonemes, but a product of the land’s specific historical trauma, specifically the repeated genocides and human-made famines that have "refined" the delta’s inhabitants through survival. To call it geohistorical is to acknowledge that a Bangalee is defined less by a static ethnic category and more by a shared endurance within a volatile geography that has been repeatedly contested, carved, and defended. 🙏

Abducted, bound, brutally beaten, stabbed, and ultimately murdered - Another #AwamiLeague activist killed in #Bangladesh amid rising political #violence under the #TariqueRahman-led #BNP Govt. The victim, Alal Sheikh, a former joint secretary of Bogura City Jubo League (Awami League’s youth wing), was reportedly abducted in broad daylight on April 2, 2026, from a crowded marketplace in Bogura. Witnesses say he was taken in front of hundreds of people by associates of a local Jubo Dal (BNP’s youth wing) leader. He was then allegedly transported to a remote wood, where he was tied up, covered with a jute sack, and subjected to extreme violence, including repeated stabbing, severe beatings, slashing of tendons, and broken bones - before being left for dead. Alal succumbed to his injuries the following day while receiving treatment at a hospital in #Dhaka. According to his family, the motive behind the killing was his decision to contest a local market association election against Shafiqul Islam, the Labour Affairs Secretary of Jubo Dal in Bogura City. This marks the third reported killing of an individual affiliated with the Awami League since the formation of the new BNP-led Govt under Prime Minister #TariqueRahman. Sources:
