Last year a record 129 media workers were killed worldwide, 2/3 by Israel -- reflecting "a persistent culture of impunity for attacks on the press," the Committee to Protect Journalists, @pressfreedom, said. Israel killed 10 times as many journalists as Sudan, and 20 times as many as Russia.

"Khalil was trapped alive under rubble for hours, having made a phone call to her family and the Lebanese military for help, Qudah told CNN on Thursday. 'The Red Cross was blocked for seven hours and when they reached her after seven hours, she was already dead,” she said. 'This kind of obstruction of rescue efforts may really amount to war crime.'"

@Aizenberg55 @NickKristof @pressfreedom The woman murdered yesterday was not an operative, she was a longtime pro-"resistence" jounlalist. You're suggesting they are fair game for targeting? If so you're lost the plot.

@citrinowicz It’s quite biased and disingenuous to say “it’s a system built ideologically on hostility to west” This simply ignores the historical context and fact. While we see a genocidal regime perform blatant atrocities for several years every single day.

Short and to the point: No one in the Iranian regime will accept U.S. terms for a deal, not the IRGC commander, not his successor, nor anyone else. This isn’t about individuals; it’s about a system built ideologically on hostility to the West and a commitment to preserving its strategic autonomy. The search for a “silver bullet” didn’t work in the past, and it won’t work now. If the United States wants Iran to truly capitulate, it would require regime change. Otherwise, it will have to reach an accommodation with the regime as it is. There are no real middle options. #IranWar#iran

New: US military officials are developing new plans to target Iran’s capabilities in the Strait of Hormuz in the event the current ceasefire with Iran falls apart, multiple sources tell me. Another option — target individual Iranian military leaders & other “obstructionists” US officials believe are actively undermining negotiations. cnn.com/2026/04/23/pol…

@xtriadx @johnsmith3433 @SFeng223355 @citrinowicz Because Europe is made up of American allies, which is even more true of east Asia, where this war is destroying their economies. Moreover, like Colin Powell said to GW Bush about Iraq, "you break it you own it".

@academic_la These conditions sound great. Thank goodness Israel has the balls to disarm Hezbollah, which nearly every country has officially supported, but nobody will actually do.

These are the Israeli conditions just for a ceasefire in Lebanon: 1) A Buffer zone in southern Lebanon up to the Litani River, cleared of any Hezbollah presence and infrastructure. At least part of it would be permanently ethnically cleansed. 2) Full military freedom of action to remove threats, including north of the Litani River. In other words, allowing Israel to operate freely anywhere in the country. 3) A long-term process to disarm Hezbollah, under an American oversight mechanism. Israel is expecting Lebanon to completely surrender its sovereignty in exchange for a temporary ceasefire. It is also worth noting that Israel violates every ceasefire it ever signed daily.

The Israeli army has bombed the Qasmiyeh bridge, which connects the cities of Tyre and Saida. The south is now almost completely cut off from the rest of the country. This will cause a humanitarian disaster.

Israeli leadership made it very clear before this overnight ‘ceasefire’ announcement, that they wanted to end Hezbollah once and for all - and intended extending Israeli territory 30 kms into Lebanon up to Litani River and wd refuse to allow Leb residents to return. Difficult to see Israel suddenly agreeing to stop this

The amount of people who are taking #Iran’s regime’s SNSC statement and its comic spin seriously is astounding. President Trump didn’t agree to that 10 point plan. All President Trump said was that it was a “workable basis on which to negotiate.” And Araghchi referenced President Trump’s 15 point plan in his statement. Those are two extremely different things. It doesn’t bind the U.S. to anything. And if you think the president is suddenly going to agree to a JCPOA-like deal along with withdrawing U.S. troops, compensation, Iranian control over the Strait of Hormuz, and the rest after the damage Iran has incurred, you should lay down and wait quietly until the feeling passes. In the end, putting the ceasefire aside, both sides on paper are light years apart. The idea that they will be able to agree to a comprehensive deal within 15 days from April 10 stretches credulity. At best there could be an extension. But it could also set the stage for another U.S. and Israeli strike. A replay of February 2026.

In the best case scenario, Trump struck a deal to reopen a Strait that was open before the pointless war he started, with the IRGC demonstrating its control over the Strait and potentially extracting fees plus sanctions relief. Thousands of innocents - including hundreds of children - dead in Lebanon and Iran for no reason. U.S. troops killed and wounded. U.S. embassies and bases in the Middle East badly damaged. U.S. standing in the world obliterated. U.S. munitions badly depleted. Hundreds of billions spent. Prices up everywhere. More global economic fallout to come. Putin strengthened and enriched. Just a catastrophic situation even in the best of circumstances. A profoundly shameful episode in American history no matter what happens next.

Which Panican wants to hand me my “I told you so” award? Trump has been running the same negotiation playbook forever. Pressure, escalation, chaos… then leverage a deal. We’ve watched it happen again and again. This wasn’t complicated. It was basic pattern recognition. While some people were panicking, others were paying attention. Now we move to Phase 2. Iran is largely neutralized. The Strait is reopening. The war is de-escalating. Markets are already reacting. That’s not a small win—that’s a global reset. This forces movement everywhere else. Russia and Ukraine get pulled closer to a real negotiation. China has to think twice about Taiwan when the U.S. just proved it will apply overwhelming pressure when it matters. And for the first time in decades, there is a real path to stepping back from endless Middle East entanglements. Look at the region. It’s no longer just Israel. You’re seeing alignment across countries that historically were nowhere near each other. The world is safer today than it was yesterday—and it’s about to get even safer over the next few months as this locks in. And yes, let’s be very clear about this: This happened because of Donald Trump. Not the pundits. Not the podcasters. Not the panic merchants. Trump. Now comes the real opportunity. With global stability improving, we can finally refocus inward at full speed. Immigration, housing, affordability, healthcare, infrastructure, AI, rebuilding American strength where it actually matters. We are entering a new American era—economically, technologically, and yes, even in space exploration. This is what the start of a new frontier feels like. So here’s the assignment: Put your phone down. Go build something. Start a family. Create. Get outside. Do something real. Stop listening to the Panicans. Onward 🇺🇸

Israel plans to carve up Lebanon in cooperation with the Syrian government, according to Israeli newspaper Maariv: 1) The core Israeli and American assessment is that Lebanon has completely failed to deal with Hezbollah. The Lebanese Army is seen as afraid of Hezbollah, avoids direct confrontation, and in some cases is infiltrated by Hezbollah-affiliated elements. 2) Israeli assessments identify only two actors in the region that are both willing and capable of fighting Hezbollah: Israel and Syria's new regime under Ahmed al-Sharaa. 3) Israel does not trust Syria either but sees it as genuinely opposed to Hezbollah. Therefore, this would be a strategic alliance of goals, not a real partnership. 4) Israel is considering having the IDF take control of southern Lebanon while Syria operates in northern Lebanon against Hezbollah, effectively dividing security responsibility over Lebanon between Israel and Syria. 5) Israeli sources stress this is not a plan Israel is actively pursuing by choice, but rather a fallback that becomes more realistic as every other option fails. 6) Contacts between Israel and Syria, possibly with American mediation are already taking place or at least being explored at various levels. These are not described as formal open negotiations, but as back-channel dialogue across multiple tracks. 7) The Trump administration would strongly prefer not to reach this scenario, but has itself largely given up on Lebanon's government and army, feeling it was misled. This would, if it happened, be a return to the status quo of before 2000, when Syria had a deciding say in Lebanese politics and Israel ruled the south. But with a twist. Back then, Syria and Hezbollah were partners in a "Resistance Axis" that aimed to push Israel out of Lebanon. Now Syria and Israel would be colonialist partners in crime weakening Lebanon for their own gain.
