I’m pleased to share that the industrial strategy proposals I submitted earlier this year have now been formally sent by @StephenMorganMP to the Secretary of State for Business and Trade @peterkyle The proposals focused on four practical areas that I believe would make a real difference to UK manufacturing SMEs: ⚡ Energy costs. 👷‍♂️ 👷‍♀️ Skills and apprenticeships. 🏭 Public procurement. 💵 Tax and investment incentives. As a Portsmouth-based manufacturing SME, we see first-hand both the strength of UK manufacturing capability and the barriers that can prevent smaller firms from growing, investing and competing. One of the key points I raised was around public procurement. Too often, large public contracts are structured in a way that unintentionally locks SMEs out. A specialist manufacturer may be perfectly capable of producing one component, process or assembly within a larger project, but not the entire finished product. By breaking suitable contracts into smaller lots, or creating recognised SME manufacturing networks, more public spending could stay within the UK economy, supporting British manufacturers, protecting skills, improving value for money and strengthening domestic supply chains. I also believe UK manufacturing has a major role to play in improving the economy, creating skilled jobs, supporting apprenticeships, increasing productivity, strengthening exports and generating long-term growth. A big thank you to Stephen Morgan MP and Jacob Bryan for taking the time to listen, engage with the proposals and put them forward at Government level. UK manufacturing has enormous capability. The challenge now is making sure that capability is properly connected, supported and given the confidence to invest for the long term. #IndustrialStrategy #Manufacturing #UKmfg

A lot of talk this week about the Rolls-Royce SMR deal being signed with Great British Energy. This is a great first step, and will test now whether the UK can actually turn a national project into real work for industry! The model behind SMRs is interesting. The reactors are built using factory made modules, manufactured off site and then assembled. This shifts a huge amount of value into engineering, fabrication and the wider supply chain. In other words, into businesses like ours! The government has already talked about aiming for 70% UK supply chain content, something I've called for, along with others for some time. If that is delivered, this could create serious long term opportunity across British manufacturing. Emphasis on "delivered". As we all know, we've been here before with big announcements that never quite translate into real industrial benefit. This time feels different. There is a contract. There is funding. There is a clear production model. Now it comes to execution. Are UK Manufacturers ready to step up and win the work? And more importantly, will this actually be followed through in a way that benefits British industry? #UKmfg #RollsRoyce #Nuclear #BritishEnergy
