Today’s vote proves what many of us have been saying: this bill wasn’t ready.
It has good provisions, but paying for them by reducing disability compensation for veterans with service-related health issues is the wrong approach.
We can, and must, do better.
Start by passing the Major Richard Star Act.

The Major Richard Star Act had 213 Discharge Petition signatures on June 9.
On June 10 @RepBost blew it up with The Mother Of All Bait And Switches: TCAVA.
If @HouseGOP wanted MSRA to pass…
… it would have.

The VA bill cannot cut future ratings for certain veteran benefits. Why would we cut Veteran benefits as a pay for? That isn't the case for ANY other funding that we are currently trying to pass out of the house? The good news about legislation is it can be edited and changed.

I have great news! Earlier today, The House once again canceled a vote on the Republican version of the Major Richard Star Act, known as the Take Care of America's Veterans Act, or as I call it, the “Taking Benefits Away from Veterans Act.”
The pressure is working! We're now at 215 of the 218 signatures needed for the discharge petition I filed with Ranking Member Takano to force a vote on my original bill. We need just 3 more signatures, and I'll keep urging others in Congress to sign on.

As a veteran, and more importantly as the representative of a veteran-heavy district, I will never vote to cut veterans’ benefits, nor will I vote to prevent current service members from filing claims in the future.
Today, I found myself at the center of an unhinged meltdown and was told to “stop talking” simply for pointing out how wrong it is to cut veterans’ benefits.
Other Republicans, along with many major veterans organizations — including @DAVHQ and @VFWHQ — are also strongly opposed to this bill for the same reason.
The good news is that this veterans’ bill can and will be cleaned up and brought back for another vote. So yes — I broke with party leadership on this to protect veterans’ benefits. Some of my colleagues disagree with me, and that’s okay.
Will a stronger version of this bill come back to the floor? Absolutely. That’s part of the process.

As a vet, but more importantly as someone who represents a veteran heavy district, I will NEVER vote to cut veteran benefits nor will I vote to prevent current service members from filing claims in the future.

The good news is, this veteran’s bill can and will be cleaned up and re-voted. So yeah, did I break away from party leadership on this to prevent cutting veteran benefits? Absolutely… and some of my colleagues disagree with me.
Will a better version of this bill come to the floor? Yes. This is a part of the process.

Speaker Johnson is delaying bringing the Take Care Of America’s Veterans Act to the floor: “Our veterans affairs committee has done a great job engaging with veterans … There still remains, though, a lot of misinformation out there, so instead of putting the bill on the floor this afternoon, we're gonna delay it just a bit. We're gonna have several more weeks ahead of us before we get back here in September would be my guess when we process all this again.”

Republican politicians are trying to pass a ridiculous bill to cut veterans benefits—after jacking up the debt with massive tax giveaways to corporations and the ultra-rich. I'm fighting back.
Today, Republicans had to pull the bill from the House floor because of broad veteran opposition. Big win today.

I have signed the Major Richard Star Act Discharge petition. This needs to be voted on. I keep hearing there is no pay for? Cool. Lets find one! Maybe take 10% of foreign funding or DOW budget? WHY WOULD YOU NOT WANT TO HELP THE VETS YOU SEND TO WAR?

50,000 US troops currently in the Middle East in an active combat zone.
The terribly named Taking Care of American Veterans Act would make it harder for them to file claims for the tinnitus and hearing loss that most of them will return with.
