White mold risk across the state still remains high despite a few very warm days. Even though it is hot outside, canopies that are closed will cool down the soil surface and trap moisture that allow for the white mold mushrooms (apothecia) to development.

This year we are testing the effects of lactofen herbicide across multiple PPO tolerant soybean varieties for their response to white mold. Just a few days after application and these effects are very apparent. By slightly dinging the plants, canopy closure is delayed which slows white mold development. This also produces an increased resistance response in the soybeans to white mold infections.

“Chemical management strategies do not result in complete control of white mold and, therefore, should be considered only as one component of an integrated management program. Reduction of white mold incidence achieved by fungicides in university field trials has ranged from zero to approximately 60%.” From the updated publication An Overview of White Mold at cropprotectionnetwork.org/publications/a… by @badgercropdoc @cropdisease @MartinChilvers1 @travisfaske @DylanMangel @dsmuelle @ISU_IPM @BisonBeanDoc @cropdoc08 +more @AlbertTenuta @baldpathologist @MandyBish1 @MahDuffeck @maddishires @DTelenko #soybean #USSoy

SCN cysts are starting to show up in fields across North Dakota. This was unfortunately an 88788 variety that is clearly not working as it should.

Another program for those interested in disease updates for the year. I have Dr. Tamra Jackson-Ziems, @DylanMangel, and Eric Hunt all joining me on July 24 from 10am-12pm at the Holiday Inn in Kearney. Everyone is welcome, and there is a free lunch for those that register.

“Fungicide applications remain an effective tool for reducing white mold levels if applied between the R1 and R3 growth stages. Not all fungicide products are equally effective at controlling white mold, with Endura® remaining the most effective product if applied between the correct growth stages.” From the @PlantDiseaseJ article cropprotectionnetwork.org/publications/m… by @BisonBeanDoc @mitch_roth12 @dsmuelle @MartinChilvers1 @DTelenko @SpartySpudNBeet @badgerbean @badgercropdoc +more #soybeans #USSoy

White mold risk is staying quite high around much of North Dakota. Lots of beans already in flowering or heading into flower currently. Keep an eye on the risk maps in your area

With an elevated risk of white mold over the next few weeks, it is a great time to familiarize yourself with the effective foliar fungicide options available. Check out the Fungicide Efficacy tables from Crop Protection Network for the most up-to-date recommendations from in-field research trials.

At this point the models driving the risk maps have only been validated in soybean, but the pathogen biology remains the same. So they will hold some truth to environmental conditions that drive disease risk across crops. Dry beans in particular are more susceptible and yellow should be thought of as high risk. Some cool research coming from these other crops in the future to help refine these models for other crops

@BisonBeanDoc Wade, assume the tool focuses on soybeans because that's where the research is, but can we correlate risk values here to other crops? ie sunflower/canola/dry bean

Each week during the next month, I'll be sharing the NDAWN white mold risk maps for North Dakota and parts of western Minnesota. Recent rains, high humidity, and moderate temps have led to high risk across much of the region. However, risk is only present if soybeans are flowering and have reached canopy closure. This is a great tool to help make recommendations on fungicide application timing.

Despite its small size, SCN can produce as many as 6 generations per growing season. That means even low SCN population densities can quickly build up ⬆️ and bring down ⬇️ yield. #BeatThePest with these proven active SCN management tactics: bit.ly/4dEhpdO

Great tools to check out ROI potential of fungicide programs as we are heading into white mold sprays in a few weeks. Not all fungicide programs are currently included, but we are working on adding more spray programs in the future
