Gray leaf spot and bacterial leaf streak can look similar on corn leaves, but management is different. Fungicides work against gray leaf spot, but not bacterial leaf streak. Both diseases produce long lesions between leaf veins. Gray leaf spot lesions are rectangular with straight edges. Bacterial leaf streak lesions are tan to brown with wavy margins. A helpful diagnostic trick: hold the leaf up to the light. Bacterial lesions often show bright yellow halos, unlike gray leaf spot. #corn #grow26 #agx @alisonrISU @maddishires @MahDuffeck @MandyBish1 @baldpathologist @MartinChilvers1 @badgercropdoc @UNL_CropWatch @NeCGA @iowa_corn @sdcorn

Diplodia leaf streak can produce lesions 12” and longer. Only the second time I’ve run across them this long. Remember that NCLB lesions tend to be 2-4” in length. The other major difference would be the presence of pycnidia producing chains of conidia in DLS lesions #mscrops

Multiple management options are available for northern corn leaf blight. One of the most effective options is to plant less susceptible hybrids. Foliar and at-plant fungicides are available. Preventive fungicide applications are most effective, and foliar fungicide timings targeting tasseling/silking (VT/R1) have been most successful at reducing disease compared to a non-treated control. Two days of corn field calls means we went from quiet to some diseases present. Don’t confuse Diplodia leaf streak (short lesion) with NCLB (longer). Lesions are generally shorter, and Diplodia produces pycnidia (pepper grains) in the leaf (close-up photo w/out pen) #mscrops

Ken Obasa and Dennis Coker identified a disease caused by #Pantoea agglomerans affecting corn and sorghum that can closely resemble iron deficiency, potentially leading farmers to apply costly nutrient treatments that do not address the underlying problem: doi.org/10.1094/PHP-07…
