the crux of it is that what you Should do, as a true principle to live your life by, is be curious. curiosity should be your end all be all & it should extend to everything. read vastly. poems & articles & academic journals & random blog posts & classics & the latest indie hit.

seeing a lot of people deriving a strong sense of superiority from the apparent belief that a written work's mode of publication (self-pub online vs traditional pub house) is some sort of hard evidence of its quality and inherent worth which is just straight up funny

@liamtgallagher @maiamindel Yeah, she has the ability to say “I see what he’s doing, I see the benefits and what it gives up, it’s not what I would do, it makes sense he’d do it.” Which is a pretty mature approach and about what you’d expect from an academic in her field.

@maiamindel She’s not even saying she doesn’t like it, why are people so weird about her? She’s just a normal academic who is allowed to have an opinion without it becoming a culture war.

@eneraldo @AriDrennen Not that irrelevant, you clearly understand there’s no biological advantage to be had then and are just okay with them being cruel and exclusionary. You can just say that.

@AriDrennen Irrelevant. He's still male. A male that have his normal healthy development disrupted and that is medically flying blind as nobody knows what will be of him in the long term but still a male nonetheless.

I simply refuse to entertain those “reading the classics is elitist” conversations cause Wishbone broke down every classic there was, and he did it with wit and charm

It’s dawned on me that there was no reason to expect these to be lead roles. Helen hardly shows up in the Odyssey and Sinon isn’t in it at all. Why were these “defenders of western civilization” expecting them to be lead roles? Because they haven’t read the poem.
Fletcher Williams “I Suck At Games” Channel@Fletche64618733

These are facts about The Odyssey. Which begs the question: Why were the actors so prominent in the advertising for this film?

@theMartian8586 @Engxxxge I think sometimes people who don’t make art with others don’t realize yet how beautiful it is to know people you feel you can just … trust with your art. Who can see what you’re trying to do and help you do that. It’s a thing to cherish and enjoy as much as life allows.

Odysseus spends a decade stuck on a beach outside Troy following the orders of a tall figure in a mask and a cape. (Agamemnon/Batman) Rather than follow that figure after the war, he chooses to sail his own path but the world has been changed by his actions (capeshit dominance).

The Odyssey is neither left or right wing. It's an autobiographical film about Nolan regretting wasting a decade of his life making Batman films and that his attempt to use those films as a Trojan horse for his own ideas was mistake he and the film industry are still paying for.

@BartokianN From what I can tell that was okay because they were not real people (the actors) and in this case it’s not okay because they are not real people (the actors). Or something.

@ThatchEffendi Fiddler on the Roof is apparently very well loved in Japan. A lot of the themes translate very well. It's cool that a story so fully rooted in one place still can feel universal through the lens of different cultures.

Jim Crow Fiddler is one of the most obvious "don't threaten me with a good times" I've ever heard. 'To Life', maybe the most beloved song in Fiddler, has a bunch of Cossacks burst into a celebration of an engagement only to...dance with everyone after an initial moment of terror. Jewish and Slavic music and dance styles begin to work off each other. Does that sound like any other movie from the last year?

@bluman302 @mralpacalips @bendreyfuss This is also the place where we say hey, we don’t know that he doesn’t have a penis, and then someone challenges whether they’re willing to call that a penis, and then we’re just Internet people talking at extensive length about a random person’s genitals because they had a job.

This is neither here nor there but Sinon isn’t even a character in the poem and at no point in the movie does Elliot Page say “I have a penis” so who is to say the character in the movie even is a biological male?

I saw someone boast about how no one talks about discourse irl and…ok? it’s not that people with “real lives” don’t have the same opinions expressed online it’s because you aren’t putting the topic in front of them for comment. Bring it up at a dinner party and see what happens.

@CheeseForEvery1 @timgill924 Regardless of my beliefs and my scholarship, you need to be able to trust I’ll act a certain way when shit is bad. That I’ll be intellectually honest when designing a course, that I’ll do my duty when a student reports sexual assault. 2/2

@CheeseForEvery1 @timgill924 When I was an academic I was already used to working with various views from time in the army. In my experience academia was less “belittle the liberal/conservative in the room” and more “at what point, and how, do your beliefs affect how you deal with org issues?” 1/2

What does ‘viewpoint diversity’ actually mean in practice? In biology, you hire someone who rejects evolution? In sociology, someone who denies the world is socially constructed? Or do you just reward whoever holds the most contrarian view and call it balance?

Sure i’ll explain it Nypng’o is an Oscar winner who was great in her small role. It is a win to have such a good actress in such a small role. Page is an Oscar nominee who was great in his small role. It is a win to have such a good actor in such a small role.
Steve Sailer@Steve_Sailer

In all this endless discourse, has anybody yet come up with a theory of how Nolan's diversity casting choices _improved_ the movie? All I'm hearing so far are things like: - But film was good anyway. - Only on screen 5 minutes. - Why are you asking? Are you racist? - I hate you.
