Excellent newsletter by @JasonStahl__ on the state of college sports as 2026 nears. Can't have a CBA without a union, and can't have a union without employment recognition (among other steps along the way). The basics of labor law can't be circumvented. jasonstahl.substack.com/p/a-players-un….
Darren Heitner@heitner

In @JasonStahl__'s newsletter, he writes that there are no shortcuts for athlete unionization and collective bargaining. He says that media spectacles of premature "CBA negotiations" without players in the room aren't authentic grassroots movements. jasonstahl.substack.com/p/a-players-un…

Excellent column on how the calendar which coaches wanted hurts players -- especially high school recruits. The only way to fix this is for players to get together collectively and bargain a new calendar which is in everyone's interests.
Dan Wetzel@DanWetzel

Control-freak football coaches lobbied for the "calendar" that they now complain about. The biggest impact isn't on them, however, but the recruits and their families who are forced to scramble here on signing day. "This whole process is not a process; it's chaotic. And it has hurt the high school athlete the most." Column for @espn espn.com/college-footba…

NCAA loses major brain injury lawsuit, ordered to pay $18M to former SC State football player who was diagnosed with dementia at 59. 1933 NCAA medical handbook warned of "punch drunk" in football players from repeated concussions. They never warned us. #storylink=cpyhttps://www.thestate.com/news/local/crime/article312633604.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">thestate.com/news/local/cri…

Congress is poised to grant the #NCAA its biggest wish: immunity from antitrust laws, disguised as athlete protections. The SCORE Act is an immediate no. Here’s why: thehill.com/opinion/congre…

The SCORE Act doesn’t protect athletes or fix anything. It is a gift to the NCAA that will cement its power over college sports and reverse the progress athletes have made ending the org’s exploitation of their hard work and talent. It’s confusing, ham handed, and oppressive. Here’s what the bill actually does:

NEWS: @RepFitzgerald, @Jim_Jordan, @RepRussellFry & @RepSCFigures join a bipartisan coalition to introduce the SCORE Act. Without federal standards, athletes and programs face legal uncertainty and a patchwork of state laws. In coordination with @HouseCommerce & @EdWorkforceCmte, the bill establishes a national NIL framework for college sports. LEARN MORE ↓

There is an interesting story shaping up this week in college sports: football coaches are diverging publicly from administrators and lawmakers. Coaches see the need for collective bargaining to bring sustainability to the game and give players a real voice:
Ross Dellenger@RossDellenger

Nearly each Big 12 coach told @YahooSports this week that they support employment/collective bargaining. RichRod: "How do you make a half million dollars and aren't an employee?" Our story from last week on the push to bring a CBA to college sports (but it's complicated) 👇

It's official. Colleges will start paying their players directly in less than a month thanks to a major legal settlement approved last night. Some details on how we got here and the battles that still lay ahead: espn.com/college-sports…
