First complete day to myself with nothing to do in who knows how long. Weather is crap. So what do I do?

@tony_chapman76 @DallasSweet Absolutely! 3 games per session was kid in a candy store stuff for me. Also, I miss the Pershing’s funnel cakes 😂. I did love the atmosphere of the high school sites but I’m definitely team “big arena to award the kids.” I mostly have no issue with the tournament logistics!

@DallasSweet @CederDceder The old days of 9:30, 11:30, 1:30 and 5:00, 7:00, 9:00 were only great because I could usually take down 3-4 frozen malts with a stick.

We have been playing 9:00 AM games for 40+ years.
Don’t have a take without offering your solution. Because your solution would involve a tournament that lasts six days OR going back to high schools.

@DallasSweet @tony_chapman76 All of your points are more valid than not liking the 9a tip. I played a 9a state game back in the day & I must admit, it wasn’t awesome. Best solution I could come up with is, I’d much rather see 9pm games than 9am games. Maybe just bump start times back an hour and 15mins?

We already have games scheduled for 7:45 or later at night depending on the day.

@tony_chapman76 This is the fruits of switching the format of state qualification in recent years. Might produce a few stinkers in the district final round (I’d argue that’s always happened) but we should get insanely deep state tournament fields.

The Class C-2 girls state tourney field is STUPID.
There have been five champs in the last five years in C-2: Oakland-Craig, Yutan, Pender, HSC and Crofton. All in Lincoln.
The non-champs? Elkhorn Valley (52 straight regular season wins); Centura (2023 D-1 champ), GACC (five straight trips, six titles).

@tony_chapman76 @Coach_Kern I’ll never forget playing in front of packed gyms. It was a perfect storm for us. New consolidation that took a couple years to come together. In a way, our basketball team in year 3 sort of galvanized the communities. Band playing beforehand. Crazy student section. It was magic!

What else do you earn?
FANS. KIDS. PARENTS.
Those things are real. A band playing for 30 minutes before and during your game. A student section that is FULL.
The atmosphere last night was everything a kid should experience in high school athletics.
But it has to be EARNED. You can’t just ask for it to happen.

Culture isn’t just fun activities. Great cultures have a “We Earned This” mindset. Kids learn to work through difficult times. Coaches challenge players to reach a level they didn’t think they could achieve. Kids aren’t coddled. Great cultures play with an edge, develop toughness and have a lot of love along the way.

With the government (via state judges and legislatures) already actively involved, it's really hard to argue against this.
For college sports to survive as a valuable entity longterm, a solution along these lines NEEDS to happen.
