What are the lessons and ramifications of the big Massie loss tonight? 🔴 Trump remains very powerful in GOP primaries (especially in red districts/states), especially when he does more than just endorse but also goes on full-blown attack. It’s a pattern: Indiana, Cassidy. Republicans go against Trump at their own peril. 🔴 He’s enforcing discipline in his own party. 🔴 It’s hard to defeat that much spending. 🔴 It’s hard to defeat a brigade of MAGA influencers going against you. Approximately $35 million was spent on this race overall. Ramifications: 🔴 Trump has greater ability to get his agenda through now. He’s ousting the obstructionists to his agenda. Few politicians on the right will dare buck him. 🔴 The ugliness of this battle angered Massie supporters on the right… what do those supporters do with that anger at the ballot box? To some degree, this caused divisions on the right. They saw it as choosing loyalty to Trump over conservative principles. Will they sit home? 🔴 I think it’s a mistake to extrapolate this primary race onto general election trends or messaging, though. It’s a closed GOP primary in a red congressional district in Kentucky. It would be a mistake for Republican candidates in swing districts or states to see this as a general election bellwether. Don’t assume the same messaging works with independents. 🔴 This race drained millions of dollars that could have gone into swing districts or races. 🔴 MAGA message will be more prevalent in primaries, which will affect general elections. Candidates in Republican primaries will embrace MAGA and Trump more in their messaging. 🔴 Exposed limitations of anti-Iran war, anti-Israel and “release the Epstein files” positions on the right. 🔴Exposed divide between younger and older folks on the right. Trump is more powerful on the right today than he was yesterday. Thoughts?
