I was there. ⁦@dhurley15⁩ had an immediate reaction. Roger Ayers didn’t have an OVER reaction. Period. It’s an emotional game and that Shot by ⁦@mullins_braylon⁩ was as emotional and dramatic as it gets.

@BennyF939 @TomCrean @dhurley15 @mullins_braylon I did. I could see your view being slanted. I have no horse in the race, I’m just analyzing the “event”, The distance speaks for itself. I have to think you have seen techs for “coaches in the refs face” before. This ends up in a he said she said. So be it, that’s sports.

@TomCrean @dhurley15 @mullins_braylon I understand the comment, Tom. But in that moment it’s hard to understand why the coach needs to interact with the official at all? All the emotion has to be complete shock and celebration. None of which should involve an official no?

Having reffed both sports at a very high level, I can tell you that the atmosphere in basketball and dealing with coaches is very different. It’s all game long, a constant back and forth, and there is a mutual understanding between basketball refs and coaches. It’s part of what makes reffing it so much fun. I’m happy that Roger Ayers (who always referees games at a Final Four level) handled the end of the game the way that he did. This was not a confrontational situation. Uconn hit a buzzer beater a few seconds before the viral moment between Ayers and Hurley. Ayers is telling Hurley that the game isn’t over yet (there was a clock adjustment from 0.02 to 0.04 - which is notable for catch and shoot). Hurley isn’t physically contacting him, he’s just between Ayers and the scorer’s table. I’ve been in some wild environments/end of game scenarios both in basketball and football. They feel surreal and you are in a state of shock to an extent. This is how great officials handle these situations, so kudos to Roger Ayers and congrats to UConn.

@YDKI007 @GeneSteratore Because camera angle couldn’t make it look different? Like the Marquette game when everyone assumed he made contact until the alternate camera angle showed he didn’t and James Breeding said in his report he never touched him.

@coachgkap @ProvidenceCrier @SethDavisHoops Play was blown dead to check the clock. Look at the official on the baseline. As soon as the ball goes through the net he signals play is dead. Maybe there’s a split second UConn starts celebrating before his hand goes up but in real time it’s not noticeable.

@ProvidenceCrier @SethDavisHoops IF time has stopped, and I’m making no claim it had, then there’s no delay possible. The delay rule requires the infringing bench player interfering with live play OR putting the ball into live play.

Hoping this is the last time it needs to be addressed, but there seems to be confusion as to what the rules are regarding contact between a coach and official. Many seem to assume that any contact between a coach and official by rule must result in a technical. This is not true. This is what's in the rulebook, specifically rule 10.2.h which says an unsporting Class A technical should be assessed to a coach or player who "disrespectfully contacts an official or makes a threat of physical intimidation or harm to include pushing, shoving, spitting, or attempting to make physical contact with an official." The phrases "disrespectfully" and "physical intimidation or harm" are by definition subjective. So it's up to the official in that situation to decide whether he is being disrespected or intimidated. The ref in this situation did not believe he was. Seeing as how the "contact" came right after Mullins' game winning shot, it's reasonable to interpret that Hurley was pumped about the shot and not trying to intimidate or threaten the official. That is my interpretation as well. Reasonable (and especially unreasonable lol) minds can differ, but to assert that the referee did not follow the rules in this situation is factually inaccurate. Thank you for you attention to this matter.

@scacchoops It’s almost like a team that is in constant motion wore down a team that isn’t used to that style or have the depth to maintain the intensity. Not that we don’t have recent history of that happening in the tournament to teams UConn plays.

Have to question how the whistle changed in the second half. Will Never know what is behind that. Scheyer can’t say it but it’s cleared it changed. Game shifted early in the second half. Uconn made the plays though and Duke withered

@walkeri141 Only thing factually wrong is Hurley didn’t make contact with breeding (I think that’s the official in the game). His report after said there was no contact and he tossed him because he was yelling aggressively at him.

So yeah no harm, no foul. Very glad we didn't actually see a Final Four game end on technical foul free throws in the end. UConn clearly deserved that game far more than Duke did and the basketball gods don't lie. Learning experience for both Roger and Dan and all is good

I had waited to comment on this hoping a pool or press report would come directly from Ayers. Glad it did - There you have it. Nothing wrong between Dan and Roger. My only thought is it's a dumb look. You just got ejected for contact w/ an official 3 weeks ago. Maybe don't lol

@Humble_Analysis You’re showing yourself as not watching much basketball. Chris Webber got a critical tech for calling a timeout he don’t have at the end of a NCG. Dean was ejected from a Final Four. Illinois had a T a few years ago for hanging on a rim. Rules are rules regardless the situation.

@noafens @DavidGPuppet @TheRealMrACL Hurley is standing about halfway down the bench with his arms crossed. You are probably looking at Luke Murray who is the closest to the coaches box signaling to Hurley to call a timeout. I don’t believe assistant coaches can call timeouts.

Making this even crazier is that you can see Hurley trying to call a timeout right as the shot is getting released. Imagine if the refs had granted him the timeout as the ball goes in. Would have been one of the all-time coaching blunders in history.

@GPIZZY @game7__ A few did stand up and step one foot on the court as happens every time a buzzer beater goes in, as we have all seen many times. Hence this being called out in the actual 2026 NCAA Men's Basketball rulebook, which is what I am quoting here.

Game 7
Game 7@game7__·
It's rare that sports fans agree on anything. But everyone seems to be in agreement today: Duke got robbed this weekend. Dan Hurley and UConn have been flagrantly ignoring the rules for the entirety of the NCAA Tournament. Sunday was no exception. There were still 0.4 seconds on the clock. The game was live. Dan Hurley walked toward a referee on the sideline. He got in the official’s face. Then he pressed his forehead directly into the ref’s forehead. SI called it a “menacing forehead tap.” No technical foul was called. If it had been, Duke shoots two free throws. Down one. With an 86% free throw shooter at the line. Here's what actually happened and why this should be a much bigger story than it is. Braylon Mullins hit a 35-foot three to give UConn a 73-72 lead with 0.4 seconds left. It was the shot of the tournament. Nobody is disputing that. But in the seconds after the shot, Hurley walked toward a referee, got in his face, and pressed his forehead directly into the official's forehead. Sports Illustrated described it as a "menacing forehead tap." The clock still showed 0.4 seconds. The game was not over. A technical foul on a head coach for making contact with an official during a live ball is one of the easiest calls in basketball. There is no gray area. Contact with a game official is a technical. If it's called, Duke's Isaiah Evans steps to the free throw line, trailing 73-72. He shot 86% from the stripe this season. Makes both? Duke wins 74-73. Makes one? Overtime. That wasn't the only violation. When Mullins' shot went in, UConn bench players ran onto the court to celebrate before the game was over. They caught themselves and ran back, but they had already entered the playing area during a live ball. Duke's radio announcers immediately called for a technical. That wasn't called either. Two separate technical foul violations. Zero calls. In the span of 0.4 seconds. And here's what makes the Hurley part impossible to ignore. Three weeks ago, on March 7, Hurley was ejected from UConn's game at Marquette in the final second for getting in a referee's face. He was chest-to-shoulder with the official. Double technical. Ejected. The Big East fined him $25,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct. In the Sweet 16 against Michigan State on March 27, Hurley challenged an out-of-bounds call, got it overturned, and then sarcastically offered his glasses to the ref who got it wrong. Lip readers caught him asking about Lasik. Nothing was called. Two days later against Duke, Hurley was officially "warned" during the game for leaving his coach's box. Told to stay put. Then after the buzzer beater, he went forehead-to-forehead with a ref. Ejected and fined $25,000 at Marquette. Taunted a ref to his face at Michigan State with no consequences. Warned during the Duke game for leaving his coach's box. Then physical contact with a referee in the biggest moment of the tournament. The full breakdown of every missed call and what would have happened if any of them were made is here: itsgame7.com/news/duke-got-… UConn came back from 19 down. Mullins hit one of the greatest shots in tournament history. That part was earned. But two technical foul violations in 0.4 seconds, and neither one called, on a coach who was ejected for the same thing three weeks ago? That's not intensity. That's a pattern. And last night, it changed the outcome of a game.

A few of thoughts: 1. If you’re a Duke fan listening to your local radio broadcast, this is exactly how you want this moment to be called. 2. One day, it’s absolutely going to happen that a tech gets called because coaches/players prematurely run off the bench to celebrate.

Respectfully @SethDavisHoops you are incorrect. Press break is perfectly executed with Spacing is solid. If the other two are in the back court, it allows rotations for a steal on the pass to Cayden. Boozer dribbles for no reason, kills his dribble & turns it over. Catch, face up, fake a pass/make a pass/eat it & make FTs/welcome the double & dribble out. All good options. Instead he dribbles, panics & a great deflection turns him over
Seth Davis@SethDavisHoops

Yes, Cayden Boozer should not have attempted the pass. But the problem was more in the execution than the decision. Duke had two players downcourt and well past the defense. All he has to do is get it past the defenders and it's game over. And it still took a 35 footer for UConn to win. The thrill of victory, the agony of defeat.
