Mara @mara_yamauchi highlights something important here. ParkRun might say it is ideologically “not a race”. ParkRun is clearly structurally a “race”. It has all the hallmarks of a competitive race. They can say it isn’t a race all they want, but that is basically the same as saying an apple is not really an apple. Or indeed, a man is not really a man.
Mara Yamauchi@mara_yamauchi

@SquidCynical @neilDCFC @WRNWestLDN @DrScottArthur @parkrun It isn’t an error. I understand that parkrun does not have sex categories. That is the whole point. Why does parkrun have age categories? Start & finish lines? Results in descending order of speed? Timing equipment? Starter setting everyone off together? There’s no need for ..

Who is MSK clever? Hip pain on internal rotation only when the hip has been resting in external rotation for a while. Enough to wake from sleep. FROM. Doesn’t sound OA to me. Tendinopathy?

@Jeukendrup Interesting. Outside, where cyclists get cooling from the airflow, would that tend to make them less likely to become dehydrated? Also, with running being highly affected by weight, does that offset the decline in theoretical performance & make mild dehydration less problematic?

There is ongoing debate whether dehydration impairs athletic performance. This blogs outlines important considerations for measuring the effect of dehydration, with consideration for possible sex differences in hydration recommendations. Click here: bit.ly/49Ztqqk

@stevemagness It's great to have beliefs challenged, that's the only way we learn. None of us have all the answers so hopefully we can enjoy the process of life-long learing.

I often get replies to my tweets that are this at their essence: “I love when you talk about the science that confirms my beliefs But can you not talk about the science that counters them!” We have to go where the evidence demands. Even more so when it goes against our priors

@stevemagness They obviously want the attention to sell whatever it is and they prey on the people who are looking for the shortcuts, which is sadly most folks!

So online you often get some crazy workout ideas, crazy combination of workouts (let's do intervals 5 days a week!) and all sorts of nutty stuff. Why? They've got to stand out to sell their ideas or products.

The truth about training: Elite runners do about 99% of the same stuff. On the whole, it's remarkably similar They're playing in the details. How long of a long run, how often to do tempos, etc On social media, the absurd often gets thrown around because it gets clicks.

@Feargal_Sharkey My local river, a lovely spot, shocking disregard from UU, no respect for the environment, and I have the pleasure of paying them to do it!

Great listen with all the sneaky details behind the performance process. Had to stop on my commute to write a few things down How to periodise heat & strength training, what is the ideal slushy consistency, how individualised are gear ratios/crank lengths/cadences👇

@zubaidihussain @GMB Indeed, that would include those in most need of support. Rather than fine people it would be far better to get in touch & try to find out why then offer appropriate support to fix the issues. They will be less likely to miss future appointments & hence get better healthcare.

Should we fine patients for missing appointments? I was on @GMB today to share my view that bringing in blanket fines for missed appointments is not the answer. It would disproportionally impact our most vulnerable in society. #gmb #MedTwitter

@drchatterjeeuk @hubermanlab I think it comes down to being open minded. We can learn from almost anybody if we have an open mind, even if the lesson we learn isn't the one they intended!

Interesting question @hubermanlab - similar question often comes up from people re. taking lifestyle advice from doctors who may have a BMI higher than the 'normal' range. Like most things in life, IMHO this is not black and white. Whilst I understand the sentiment behind the question, which at first glance appears reasonable, there are many potential flaws. A doctor, for example, who has struggled to keep their weight in a 'healthy' range may have a deep understanding of some of the issues that patients face - e.g. difficulty controlling their food intake & struggling to find motivation to move their bodies - in a way, that doctors who find it easy to do so, cannot or find hard to understand. If we apply this type of question to golf - would we expect Tiger's' swing coach to be able to swing a golf club like Tiger? Probably not. But we would want the coach to be able to see Tiger's swing faults and help him correct them. So, whilst I understand why so many people ask questions like this - I don't think there is a one-size-fits-all type answer - like most things in life! Would love to hear your thoughts Andrew if you get a moment to reply.

I think it’s fair to ask if the MD or scientist or public health official saying to do X or not do Y looks and sounds healthy and vital. I avoid going to a dentist with bad teeth. What do you think? I sense diverging opinions on this.

Written by me for a book chapter! It's a hard concept to grasp for many, but by attempting to make life more safe for young people, we usually make them less safe. I wish NGB's got this!
